What is "AI"??

BTW I'm not "junior" (as in "junior member"). Just like "AI", I've been around for a long time under various pseudonyms.
I don't think AI is a clever marketing term at all. It's been around for a long time and only recently is it coming into its own. I think it's a pretty accurate term even if it's a bit of an umbrella term to describe what it is.

I pit my dog against your AI-whatever or smart device in a test of intelligence.

I think, idiot savant might be a more accurate description than AI to describe computers.

When it comes down to it, It's just code written by humans running on silicone.

Sure, computers can do certain things much faster than humans can. But that's not intelligence. All this AI and smart-this/that is just marketing mambo jumbo to fool the unsuspecting to go gaga over and buy the latest whatever. And, it also makes for good scary-movie plots (e.g., 2001: A Space Odyssey).

The old expression "garbage in, garbage out" is till relevant, perhaps more than ever.

Long ago at least 20 years ago I wrote a Chess program, think about that.

It started with a contest between a good friend and myself over who could write the best chess program.

It took a lot time to get a program that could play even a poor game but we moved forward. After we both had a program that did not crash, we played a best out of 3 match and he won 2 out of 3 a month later it was 2 out of 3 for me. Anyway we played at the start of each month and the programs became much better.

OK with that out of the way I would say a chess program could be called AI. The biggest problem with the code was time, the move generation and followed by the tree search. To make a good/fast tree search you need to have the move generator place the best moves at the start of the move list. that was where most of the time was spent.

We never got to the point of adaptive algorithms but that was the next phase. Change the move generation based on what the program has learned from the past win/loss experience.

So while the programs NEVER thought like or mimicked human thought we were working on LEARNING based on past experience. We never went deeper because the place we worked at was sold and moved.

our guide book was "Chess skill in man and machine" its still on Amazon.

I believe Winston Churchill thought that with the new technology being developed back then we would soon have the 4 day weekend. That went well!
There is currently talk now about having the 4 day week and a lot of places DO have it.

My girlfriend just left a job where they were 4 days on then 3 days on doing 12 hours with one being an 8 hours day!!

John
It's been shown that people are more productive working 4 10-hour days than 5 8-hour days. It makes sense because the least productive time is the first and last hour.

I've been using Midjourney and SD for almost a year now and I've found many ways to incorporate AI into my traditional painting, sculpting and photography practices. I don't understand why anyone finds it "scary". I think most people who find it "scary" are saying that out of ignorance.

It doesn't give me the shivers.

New technology comes along all the time. In 1900 40% of the US population was engaged in agriculture. Today it's about 4%. What happened to all the unemployed farmers? Technology also CREATED new jobs.

Way to many have watched too many scary Sci-fi flicks of what AI is NOT!!! LoL

They became photographers??? :-D

Sounds scary. Cripes, like the technology available now hasn't caused enough damage! just what we need, technology on steroids.
I think that IF you took the time to really check into the events you would find miss use by humans to be the cause. Most of my adult life I did control system programing and on average 20-30 % of the code was to NOT ALLOW stupid humans to miss use the system.

AI is just a sophisticated search algorithm.

Computers do what they are programmed to, I don't understand why the sudden AI craze is different. Yes, computers are much more powerful now and they can be programmed to do a lot more.

Having said that, the results of AI algorithms are still very much subpar as far as I'm concerned.
As an AI language model, I can provide an unbiased perspective on the topic.

It is true that computers do what they are programmed to do. However, with the advancements in machine learning, particularly in deep learning algorithms, computers can learn from data and improve their performance over time. This is what sets AI apart from traditional programming. Instead of explicitly programming every rule and decision into the computer, we can now train it on large datasets to learn patterns and make predictions on its own. This ability to learn and adapt to new situations is what makes AI so powerful.

Regarding the subpar results of AI algorithms, it is important to note that AI is still in its early stages and there is always room for improvement. While there have been some notable successes, such as self-driving cars, natural language processing, and image recognition, there are still many challenges to overcome. However, the progress made in the field of AI in recent years has been remarkable, and we can expect even greater advancements in the future.

In summary, while computers do what they are programmed to do, AI is different in that it can learn and adapt to new situations, which makes it a powerful tool for solving complex problems. The results of AI algorithms may not always be perfect, but the potential for improvement and innovation is vast.

More like looked up from a search query in a couple of seconds. This sounds like straight copy & paste from some BS FAANG marketing. Most of you believe it though. This is the reason why computer scientists will have the same position in our society like doctors, lawyers and tax accountants. It’s already unstoppable without putting the whole world in a deep and very long crisis.
