Here is a quick and simple method of marking an image to make sure
people know whose it is.

True, you can clone it out but it would be very tedious and
probably not worth the effort.

Bad Eagle Joke: Gotta joke to tell you....this fish I know swims into a dam......

Hi Mark J,

Dcfever.com is a Hongkong website. They run a DC shop in the famous Mongkok AV equipment retail district. Next time you come to Hongkong, go there and make a complaint!

I'm very curious to see if anyone has tried Digimarc and what their experience was. My understanding is that the watermark can even survive resizing and recompressing. And the tracking feature looks like it would be worth the price of admission:

http://www.digimarc.com/PRODUCTS/IMAGEBRIDGE/MarcSpider/default.asp

Looks like they'll mark and track up to 5000 images a year for $199. I think it would be worth it for a situation like this one. I found a few threads on this board talking about it, but not from anyone who used it.

(I don't work for them either, but it does sound like a fun technology to work on. I also use the really tiny JPEGs protection!)
Just wanted to clarify some terminology that might be a little
confusing.

I have a feeling that when most people say "watermarking" an image
they're talking about adding a visual mark - a copyright
statement, drop shadowed text, etc.

However "digital watermarking", the kind offered by Digimarc, is
essentially invisible to the naked eye. It adds what seems to be
minor invisible noise to an image that can then be later read out
as data. Chances are your eyes won't know the difference between
the before and after versions. Think of it as a nearly invisible
UPC code stamped onto your image. That data identifies the owner of
the image and - if you pay extra - Digimarc will proactively spider
out/search for illegal copies of your image.

Digimarc costs money and is not fool-proof, but it is (as far as I
know) the most protection you can have on a publicly-available
digital image.

--disclaimer: I don't work for Digimarc nor do I use their service.
Only posting Web-sized images is my deterrent (and I really dislike
embedding a visual copyright statement).

There are a few funny things on this thread I find funny.

First of all, people keep posting that a 800x600 res image is useless... Thats funny, since for example web designers rarely, if ever use images much bigger than that. so if you have a nice picture of a bird, and I'm doing a website about birds, I can take your picture and use it. I perhaps couldn't sell the picture, but your picture might make my site look better and draw in more traffic...

anyway, other than that...

I would imagine that almost every person on this forum has downloaded a song, taped a movie off TV, or commited some kind of copyright infringement at some point in their life. If you haven't then I guess you can complain about it, but if you ever have, what right do you have to complain? Just because it's yours?

I also find the comparision of the stealing of a picture to be the same as stealing someones car. Those aren't in the same ball park, they aren't even the same sport. Both are not the right thing to do, but saying they are the same is ridiculous.

Be that as it may, I do understand your being upset but if you expect everyone to sign a non-disclosure before they view your pictures, don't post them online.

my 2 cents...

this is why I only upload 640 x 480 or smaller most of the time
anyway, other than that...

how arragant of YOU........ ofcourse I have a right to complain and ofcourse because it's MINE!!!!!

Stealing is stealing, is stealing...
you can't even TRY to justify this for us and.....

if it was YOUR custom created car,

I'm sure YOU'D be OK with someone borrowing your creation, entering it into a contest (as this thief did) and saying it was THEIR creation, wouldn't you? You'd just pat them on the back and say....

"my stupidity for leaving it in my driveway" LOL
Be that as it may, I do understand your being upset but if you

Again, just a tad arrogant on your part to say it this way.

have a nice day, I respect your opin but strongly disagree with it.

my 2 cents...

THE GREAT THINGS LIST?
1. CoalXMan's philosophical ideas about life and phtoography!

2. Many people viewing this thread probably hadn't seen the photo - me included - I may never have seen this great photo if it wasn't for the photo thief. Thanks Mr. photo thief!!

3. I went and had a look at the other entries to that comp... and enjoyed viewing some fine work...
http://www.pbase.com/stfchallenge/challenge_46_exhibition

I never would have seen those other images. And you know what? I thought the first place entry was not as good as many of the others. Who cares about some warship water reflection. Bah...

4. ...someone else can continue the GREAT THINGS LIST...

4.
First off the Size of the Picture is really useless to anyone, for
any real means, that is important for you to uderstand.

Second the Picture was Good, the Idea was great, so no matter how
you posted the pictures, the idea for the pictures was given away
the moment you decided to share your work with others to see, that
you cannot stop.

Just imagine had you posted a full size rez of the picture, now you
would have something to cry about.

As for the person who posted your pic, and created this Nightmare
for you, Thank him for being an idiot and bringing your attention
to a Security Breech in your life.

Now you can breathe out slowly.

What good is being a photogopher if you can only FOCUS on the bad
things, try looking for what good came out of this.

At this point I could write the List for you. :)

Once you learn how to BREATHE LIFE IN AND OUT LIKE THIS, you will
have a new skill at coping with some of the Insanity injected into
it.

Anybody care to start the List of great things that came out of this.?

THE GREAT THINGS LIST?

Mark, I know how frustrating that can be. My husband posted a picture of our 1971 Road Runner on a website. Then later on he noticed someone else had the picture of our Road Runner and was claiming it was his car. He is a member of Moparts and another member sent him a link and said "hey, look this guy is claiming your car as his." We were upset over it, but a little flattered after we cooled off that he must have liked our car that much. Sue.
One of my images from one of the challenges was STOLEN by a low
life son of a itch and, posted at a photo sharing site called
DCFever.com

I posted this in STF also to warn them as well!

This REALLY pi_sses me off!!! I am posting this as a warning to
ANYONE and everyone on STF to be Very careful what you post on the
internet, where you post it and, who you are allowing to view it.

I will no longer be posting any image of note to the challenges....
no more!!

Sure, this could happen to ANYone, anywhere, at anytime. The fact
is though... it happened HERE at STF challenge and, if that person
can steal MY image, he can steal yours also and pawn it off as HIS
image as he did with my image.

SOmeone was nice enough at usefilm.com to tip me off as the the
theft and misrepresentation of my image on the DCFever.com website.
This is SUCH a bummer and really is discouraging to me to say the
least.

The important thing is: make sure if you ARE going to share an
image, that it's not one that is very important to you!!! I'm not
discouraging you from posting at the STF challenge...... just
telling you to beware WHAT you upload to make sure it's an image
you really do not care to much about!!!

here's the link to the jerk to stole my image, along with images of
OTHER STF MEMBERS IMAGES: Klaus Weise, Roberta F and a few others.

http://www.dcfever.com/photosharing/viewphoto.php?photoID=82897

And since the site takes SO long to open, here's the image place
holder where my WAS posted.......

and a second image showing the comments about the stealing of my image

AND, the actual image he STOLE and presented as HIS

I will tell you this: I will track down this low life and, I will
sue him for ANYTHING I can get....... anything!

Sorry to put a damper on your day......... mine also! :-(

No need for marking any of my images, there is a copyright in place on the page for each image and that's all that is necessary.

Yes, too bad more people didn't look into copyright infringement and intellectual property laws - there seems to be a few in this forum who have a bad attitude about theft and they might not care about their work, but a lot of us do and I have been copied and stolen from too many times to just brush it off or have somebody tell me to forget about it and carry on. It's what I do and get paid for and the last thing I want is for some untalented bum to steal stuff and claim it as their own.

Then you sir, would be a copyright thief - designing a website and using other people's graphics, photos or text without permission is still theft and I sure wouldn't want a web designer who was a thief and certainly not one that I paid to create a site that didn't have enough talent to do their own work or at least get copyright-free pictures or permission from the artist to use the images.

Damned straight - it's mine and there's too many people like you who feel that way about their own possessions/creations, but not about others.

There was nothing ever said about viewing them at all, so where you go that from, who knows - this is about theft of graphics/photographs and using them without permission. I really get a kick out of people who change things around to suit themselves.

My .02 worth.

couldn't agree more......
and you perfected it today. You took a case of THEFT and, turned
it into some political thing.

It would be nice if you had more respect for the interest of those
IN this thread and, at the very least.... stuck to the subject at
the heart of this post.

I'm not going to respond to your political attack on our president
or anything else you said........ can we stick to the subject
HERE, so that other people can learn from MY mistake the mistake
the THIEF made?

"hunt him down...forever"

Man, you must be an american "stupid white men".

I can understand that you're angry and perhaps you have legal choices.

But I can't understand this superheroic BS talk...

Are you sure you're so called president hasn't got the copyright
for these phrases he uses to bomb children and civilians?

Hope this nationalistic and hemonial nightmare will soon be past...
for the sake of all nations.
Let's hope there're enough intelligent lifeforms in the midst of
the voters.

I thought this thread would run and run :-)

To those who commented on my anti right-click code. I said I knew it would not deter the determined hacker but at least I have made my point when you make a right-click. Since my earlier problem with the newspaper I have had a couple of people ask if they can use one of my pictures on their website.

Of course I said "Yes, as long as I have credit", which I have been given.

I am flattered to be asked for the use of a picture, one is used by the National Geographic magazine on their website, but to be not given the courtesy of first asking permission makes me very annoyed especially from those who should know better.

Have fun.

Mark,

Sorry to hear that your image and others got stolen. I hope the idiot who did it is feeling very guilty from reading our comments, and never to do such a stupid thing again. And I hope this issue serve a warning to other people who are planning to steal images in the same manner as well.

Is there a way to place a watermark on our images or hide our names in the metadata area of our photos so that we can rightfully claim ownership of our photos? My wife and I post a lot of photos in the web and worldisround. So I'm concerned about this kind of theft. Fortunately, my wife and I have been posting very small images on the web to discourage theft.

I had someone post an underwater shot of mine once, then suggest it was his. My copyright was still in the corner if you enlarged the photo!
