The Panasonic Lumix ZS50 manual provides a handy table indicating the supported number of pictures for 8GB, 32GB, and 64GB SD cards. Intriguingly, I successfully used a 128GB micro SD card with an adapter, and the camera read it seamlessly. As I prepare for an extended overseas trip, the consideration of upgrading to a 256GB card arises. Given the marginal price difference between 128GB and 256GB options, opting for higher capacity seems logical.

Now, my query revolves around the Lumix ZS50's compatibility with a 256GB SD card. Has anyone experimented with inserting a 256GB card into this camera, and if so, what were the outcomes? Any insights or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Per the specs I've seen for the ZS50 Maximum Memory Capacity 128GB.

You could insert a 256GB SD card into the camera - but the internal circuitry (formatting) may only be capable of addressing 128GB of storage. That would mean half the card's capacity would remain unused.

Personally I prefer using multiple cards rather having all my pics on one card in case something goes awry with card or camera, and lose pictures.

You could do some simple tests to see if the camera actually formatting the 256GB.

Format the card in the ZS50, use a SD Card Reader (or SD slot on your computer) to see what the formatted total Free Space/ Capacity is:

Jon, your information has been invaluable—thank you! Considering the mere $5 price gap between the 128GB and 256GB SD cards, the potential utility of the larger capacity outweighs the minimal cost difference. Even if the Lumix ZS50 may only utilize 128GB of the 256GB card, the surplus capacity can serve other purposes effectively. Excitedly, I've just placed an order for the 256GB Extreme SD, and I'll be sure to provide updates on how it performs with my camera.

Purchased a 256GB SD card that's compatible with the camera, and it reads seamlessly. Still need to confirm how much of that memory the camera can utilize. Nevertheless, the decision to opt for the 256GB card, over the 128GB card seems worthwhile. The expanded capacity opens up possibilities for various storage needs and use cases beyond just the camera.

That is also what I do, for exactly the same reasons.

Never a good idea , if the card fails , gets lost or stolen you lose everything.

The fuller the card gets the slower the start up and responsiveness will get .
Better travelling with smaller cards .
