Two problems with new A7 IV

Hello, I just got my A7 IV yesterday and it's quite a nice camera. Feels good in the hand and I love the flippy screen! I have run into two issues that I couldn't find the answer to, so I hope you can help me out.

1. The first is that I can track/focus with the touch screen, but it doesn't take a photo. I still have to press the shutter button, which is quite inconvenient when the screen is flipped out. How can I program the camera that it takes a photo once it confirms focus?

2. I'm getting banding in my shots. First I thought it was due the electronic shutter/the front curtain. But it still persists when I turn that off. I found 1 similar case but it was with the A7 III:
There the shutter kept giving banding results even when turning everything off with the fully mechanical shutter. Perhaps this is user error, but I couldn't find other settings besides ''silent shooting'' and ''ecurtain''. Is there one I missed?

You cannot take a photo using the LCD screen, only by pressing the shutter.

Can't help you with the banding problem.

Some artificial light sources cause stripes in the picture. In what light do you take pictures?

First, congrats. You folks in Europe are lucky!

The A7IV has touch focusing. NOT touch shutter on the rear screen. We haven't advanced that far yet!

As for banding, it depends on the situation you are photographing. Can you provide samples with exif data?

We? Sony may not have advanced that far but my more than 7 years old Samsung NX30 has One Touch Shot.

:-) Well, wasn't there already a (settable) feature which released a shot when people showed a certain degree of smile/grin?

The next iteration might be the touch-shutter, or focus-confirmation-shutter-release, or the long time awaited great-photographic-subject-alert-bell. :-D

Same with my Canon M50 (mark 1). I think my Panasonic DMC-Zs100 does too. I would think Sony definitely could do it if they wanted to. Probably just not high on their list of requirements.

Many older Sony cameras have touch shutter too. My NEX 5T has it (and it has touch menus.) It looks like all the Sony APS-C cameras with touch screens have it. The A7C seems to be the only full-frame model with touch shutter.

seems like something that a firmware upgrade could implement?

The only way to get touch shutter is through a smartphone or tablet and use remote shooting with the A7IV.

Please add a photo demonstrating the banding so that we can analyze it.

That kind of shutter activation is found on some consumer models but I doubt it will make an appearance on Sony’s higher end line.

The banding should disappear with mechanical shutter. Turning off silent shooting should do the trick. If it’s not you may have a defective shutter.

Hi, About the touch shutter, the Canon 5Dmk4 had that, you could change it the menu, dont know about the Sony , i'll have to check, its a good idea to know what to look for in the menu.

Were these shots taken under LED lighting? I think that you can get banding with CFLs too.

I completely agree with that. Such a gadget is a gimmick, because judging a good shot cannot be done at a distance of a foot or 30 centimeters on such a small display.

Technically, this would be a small task, a software-only affair that Sony could implement immediately if they wanted to.

I don't know if these criticisms are a troll attempt to downgrade this stunning camera.

Yes... It is in many cameras and I actually get surprised-annoyed when the picture is taken, while I "only" wanted to focus on the subject.

Since Sony decided that they should implement the slowest sensor for the past 5 years, electronic shutter on this camera should be used mostly in natural light (to avoid banding -though you can try it with any light source and play with your shutter speed, you might can get away with it) and for steady subjects (to avoid rolling shutter). It's even worse than the A7III in this regard unfortunately.

Banding: may be a setup issue.

For example: if you shoot faster than 1/100 with neon lights, or faster than 1/1000 with dimmed LED light, you have banding (with any camera).

Total nonsense, you know this works great on other cameras right, not to mention smart phones...
