that someone would actually do this. talk about childish behavior! thanks nancy, for keeping things straight.

to the pea-sized minded offender, one day you'll be caught. if not at this, then something else.

we're about the fun, learning, challenge of photography. in the end, you may ruffle a few feathers, but you won't upset the challenge, nor change the result.

go back under the rock you crawled out from under now, and do try to find some basic sense of respect and decency that may, just may, qualify you to be a member of society.

as for me, i'm taking mike's advice and gonna go brew some espresso.

cheers all and thanks again to nancy, and mike, and sorry to simon that you have to deal with ths.

. . . . I'd sure hate to have to judge this contest, there are so many absolutely killer images this time.

It's good that it's done on a voting basis.

Cheers

corrected end date of 9am Wednesday EST (New York) 11th August

(If you haven’t already, please visit the results thread for
Challenge 73 before reading further...

Thank you Mike for your consummate hosting of Challenge 73. Hands
and Feet was a great theme to work with. It was open enough to
allow everyone to participate and I’d like to keep that vibe going
with the theme for this next Challenge.

Challenge 74 Assignment: Metal

Challenge 74 is about Metal in all its multifarious guises. Metal
is all around us from the cutlery we eat with everyday to the
sculptures that adorn public parks. I’m assuming each of us will
have contact with metal at some stage of our day so everyone should
be able to participate. Creativity is highly encouraged so do
whatever it is you do to get those creative juices flowing and dive
in.

This Challenge should above all be an adventure with an emphasis on
enjoying the ride. If you learn something along the way then please
consider that a wonderful bonus. Join in and give it a go –
everyone is very welcome to participate.

Post processing can be used to get the most out of your shots. Like
always, voters will decide the best photos to represent the theme
at the end of the Challenge period.

Challenge 74 begins at 9am EST (New York time) on Friday, July
30th, 2004. I should have the galleries set up within the next 24
hours. You will have two full weekends to take pictures.

GUIDELINES

These guidelines are meant to help things run smoothly for all...
and to serve as a handy reference to answer common questions.
Thanks for reading all this stuff again:
  • Up to three(3) images are allowed in each of the two galleries
(Eligible and Exhibition). Each photographer can choose whether to
enter one or more photos per gallery. This should generally
accommodate everyone's personal style and approach to the
challenges...whatever works best to make the challenge more fun for
you.
  • You can enter photos anonymously if you want also. If you do,
please send me an email indicating your identity for any anonymous
entries. My address is in my forum profile.
  • Those who prefer to have critiques of their photos be more
"critical", feel free to mark the image title with an asterisk ( ).
  • Please put your name(identity choice) and a unique title on each
of your image thumbnails. It really helps to keep voting problem
issues to a minimum.
  • Please resize your images to no larger than 800 pixels on the
longest side before uploading to pBase... can be larger if a
panoramic image. This cuts down on too much usage, and it helps to
preserve the quality of your image upload for best viewing.
  • Please don't move images around in the galleries...respect
first-come-first-serve. If you alter an image in any way, please
indicate that a change was made to the original when reposting it.
You can repost an image into its original spot if it's the same
image (that's just been altered). Any new images should be placed
at the end of the gallery. This should avoid any confusion...and
everyone will be treated equally.
  • Please keep your questions and concerns posted in this thread for
best response. One of us will address them as soon as possible.
  • Challenge time period will run from 9am EST (New York time) on
Friday, July 30th, 2004 and will end at 9am EST on Wednesday,
August 11th, 2004.. Universal time tables will be posted in the
galleries...a big thanks to Mike Fitzgerald for always providing
these. A separate voting thread will be posted shortly after the
end of the Challenge period.
  • Eligible images must be taken with a Sony digital camera...&
within the challenge time period. The winner of this gallery will
host the next Challenge. All entries should include a date
indicating when the photo was taken..."exif" data attached would be
ideal(if available). "Exif" data is a big help to a lot of viewers
for a variety of reasons. If the "exif" data is not preserved, try
writing it into your caption (by referring to the original photo's
"exif" data that should be available before doing any photo
processing). At the least, please include the date the photo was
taken on all the eligible photos. This is a popular request...so
I'm passing along your requests here. THANKS, everybody, for your
friendly cooperation.
  • Exhibition images can be obtained with any camera at any time. If
you do not want to host the next Challenge, this is the gallery you
should post your images to.
  • Those not familiar with uploading images to pbase can view this
link for instructions: http://www.pbase.com/stfchallenge/howto
  • Remember, the login name to pbase is "stfchallenge"; and the
password is "stfpost".
  • Here’s a link to the stfchallenge galleries page:
http://www.pbase.com/stfchallenge/root

I'm really looking forward to seeing what creative ideas you come
up with.

Simon.

It's not just your photo that is involved. A whole bunch of them this time-- I'm not sure if everything is even still there. Some may have been deleted. I'm not going to go put them all back this time. I give up.

Several images seem to have been moved around in the eligible gallery. I'm sure this 13 year old geek feels like he's a man with power now. Maybe he's after the attention he didn't get when he was a baby.

Could be best if we just totally ignore him from now on...

"I think a good product would be "Baby Duck Hat". It's a fake baby duck, which you strap on top of your head. Then you go swimming underwater until you find a mommy duck and her babies, and you join them. Then, all of a sudden, you stand up out of the water and roar like Godzilla. Man, those ducks really take off! Also, Baby Duck Hat is good for parties."

The prankster is still at it, moving entries around. I did a "set representative" on the header photos since the eligible header photo got moved out of first position. We'll see if it lasts.

I have requested activity logs for the previous two weeks from the owner of PBase.

I was going to contact the person directly to save them the embarrassment of having their details plastered over the internet but this continuing behaviour has me thinking I should just post the results here.

It's only a matter of time before the identity of the person is known. If you are reading this, stop messing with the STF Challenge Galleries now and save yourself further trouble.

To all the rest of you - my deepest apologies that you should have to endure such childish and unwanted behaviour. It's been uncalled for and is, I would say, grounds for legal action should certain affected parties here wish to pursue such avenues.

Again, sorry to those of you affected by this unfortunate behaviour.

Regards,
Simon Bennett.

the canon challenges have a controlled password, so to speak. in order to upload your image, you have to get the pw from the host or other trusted member.

maybe we should do this?

just a thought.

Andy - I can't see that helping as it'd need to be distributed to all who are participating.

One method I can see working is to have a third, 'holding' gallery that people upload to and the host have control over the eligible and exhibition galleries with their own chosen password. The host would move the pics from the holding gallery to the relevant Challenge gallery. This would stop pics being moved - but it wouldn't deter unwelcome comments.

If each person who wished to participate also had a login... is another avenue.

at least the pw isn't published, y'know what i mean? in order to get the password, the person would have to email the host or other member, and be verified of sorts. a small test, but it's something against the trolls and troublemakers?

the decisive moment: 'the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as the precise organisation of forms which give that event its proper expression.' -- henri cartier-bresson

I see what you mean now. That's definitely a good idea. I think we may be in for a post-Challenge review thread to discuss a solution once the current Challenge is over.

Thanks for the positive suggestion.

it's not perfect, but it's easy enough to implement, nobody would ever get shut out, and the password can be changed frequently even if need be.

i think the "holding gallery" idea is more work for the host, and it's enough already in terms of work :) i do llike the self-service aspect.

After missing the last challenge (just got too busy at work to try to get out and take any pics for the challenge, and didn't have any in stock that fit for exhibition, so I just passed last time), I am obviously last-minute in entering this one as well.

I again haven't had much time to get out and take new stuff (anything letal I can shoot in my house seems to have already been shot by others in the challenge, removing the originality of it for me), so I decided to at least try to keep my trend of entering the exhibitions alive.

What the heck is going on? Last time I entered the challenge, it seemed there was some debate and complaint about the format, and some debate among the long-timers on even entering the challenges any more. Then I miss one - I at least voted, but wasn't really tracking whether or not all debate had receded on the format and if all relationships, complaints, and issues had been resolved.

But for the first week and a half of this challenge, it seemed like most or all of the old names are back, the format has been restored to what some preferred, and there are lots of entries in the galleries. Success? Well, almost.

Now there is some clown playing around with the galleries and the pictures within. Comeon! Do we really need this type of behavior?!

I think the idea of having a 'storage' gallery for the photos to be deposited to by any users would be a good idea, having the challenge moderator to add the photos to a locked gallery which cannot be manipulated. Photos should be added in the time order they were entered. Captions, titles, names, and camera details should be provided to the moderator.

I hope either way, this silliness can be resolved...I look forward to continued participation in the exhibitions, and at some point in the near future, maybe even some exhibition attempts when one of the challenges falls within my extreme interest and realm of possibility.

Good luck resolving the issue.

Justin, all title, caption and other data are transferred when the image is moved or copied. PBase has evolved and is pretty cooperative with that sort of thing nowadays, so it would mean minimal work for the host. The scheme would, however, need some host's assistants to give the holding gallery frequent attention in all time zones, since the images would remain vulnerable until moved. But overall it sounds very workable.

Hope you get your head above water soon with the workload.

Mike
