Hi all,

Since a few weeks I'm the proud owner of the new Sony A1.

Now I have a question about the ARW files. Does anyone know how I can use these files, since Lightroom/Photoshop/Camera Raw is still not able to read those?

Cheers,
Alex

Too early. It takes a while for software writers to catch up.

Even the quick-to-add-cameras Silkypix has not added it yet.
Last update for cameras supported by Adobe was in december. I have a vague memory they do it every quarter

Sony's own Imaging Edge seems to support the A1 https://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/app/imagingedge/en/

Yes, you're right. But, Imaging Edge isn't able to convert the files to DNG. You can only export to big TIFF files.

Yes! That's great news :)

I never under stood why there's no standard raw format just there us with tiff. Having to buy new software every time I buy a new camera seems like a money grab.
I've wondered about that too. Maybe it's tied into some of the technical details that they guard closely but who knows? It would make life easier though. You don't have to buy new software, just have to be patient. :-)

You could apply that questioning to a lot of different things, like lens mount. A vendor's RAW file must iterate to support a lot of data outside of the standardized metadata...that they typically support haphazardly too.

Why couldn't all RAW files have a baseline data block that any version of editing software can read, and only to access the camera specific data, need a special import filter?

There are only so many lens mount systems, and from what I can tell, are mostly standardized and unchanging from year to year. If you bought an e-mount lens in 2011, chances are likely that it will fit on your new camera in 2020. But RAW is a constant game of whack a mole.

Basically that is how it is done. Mostly raw formats are structured like JPEG and TIF: a header and data. The earliest Canon raw's even had the tif extension, even though most viewers could not read them.

Much of the information needed to make something out of the raw data is stored in a standardised way in the exif information. That is why it is possible for other software makers to produce useful output, though they have no access to all of the maker notes.

Anyway I do not see how there could be a 'money grab'

That begs the question as to why Adobe Photoshop has to be upgraded every time I get a new camera, if this data is fairly generic. I'd be less hesitant to break my workflow and buy a new camera once in a while if they didn't frustrate me with "Photoshop cannot read the file" messages.

This conversation is going nowhere. Ciao
