Unless you find P mode doesnt give you the options you need, its fine for you. I use P mode a lot for just snapping .... if necessary I switch to a different mode..

As you said P with program shift does EXACTLY what any other mode would do.... IF I want a long shutter speed i can use T and select it or I can shift the P program until i have my shutterspeed... There is no difference.
I have a 1D, a couple of L zooms and a couple fast short primes
that I bought to help shoot my kids sports. I love it all so far.

However when I am traveling, hiking, or just shooting the family in
the yard kind of stuff, I find myself relying on the P mode.

The family is always moving around, nothing is ever set up or posed.

I will use AE lock or Program shift sometimes for some more control.

The 1D does such a great job at metering that P works great almost
all the time. Compared to the spikey histograms I was almost always
getting with my E-10, the histograms on my 1D images are nice,
smooth curves.

So...What is so bad about shooting in P mode?

Man are you having a rought week or is this the usual that I have happened to miss over the past 11 months.

People may not believe me, but I've been on forums that make this look like the girl scouts. LOL.

I guess it's just one of those weeks. Who knows.

I don't think I've ever drawn quite as many threads like this in such a short period of time before on THIS forum.

But I'm sure capable of doing it. Usually it's when somebody says something that is "twisting my words", or implying things that I didn't intend to convey. Sometimes I'll respond in like fashion, implying things that they didn't actually say (but could easily be inferred).

That got me in pretty hot water one time. LOL.

Sometimes fighting fire with fire gets ya singed. ;)

Being in control means, to me, that no one or camera is going to suggest an initial setting-- that's my job not the camera's.

Being in control is that I think about the shot before I put the camera up to my eye and I decide what settings I want to achieve the desired effect.

Yes I am fully aware of shifting---- blah blah blah. To much work and less about control.
I assumed you were talking mainly about Hyperfish, and not me. And
I was trying to "defend" his post, much as I would defend mine.
Really, "explain" is probably a better term than "defend".

At any rate, give P-mode a try. You use the small wheel to
"shift" the combination of Av/Tv it selects, and you use the big
wheel on back to set exposure compensation. You still have full
control, really.

It's just always felt ackward to me.
I hope we are on the same page--- I was not referring to you. :-)

I think your post speaks for itself and I had no prob's with it--
thus no response on my part. You merely made a observation and
wanted to share with others.

Thanks for sharing.

Now back to OT (on topic). I think p-mode has a lot to offer--- I
just can't figure out what it is and no post yet has convinced me
:-)

I have no problem with you answering a question, I just don't think it should take 19 attempts. To me a troll is someone who runs around rampantly posting. You post over 10 times as much as I do. And most of it is garbage (like in this thread). Personally, I could care less what people think about me. It's obviously a touchy subject for you.

I answered the question.

Got a problem with that?

I have a life, thank you very much. At this point in time, DPR
happens to be a part of my life. Maybe more than some care for.
Don't worry, it won't always be that way.

As far as my being a "troll": if this forum had a way to easily
set up polls, and an apprpriate forum for doing it, I'd gladly put
myself up against you for that title.

I think you have been and still are (most of the time) a gentlemen.

best of luck --- until the next exciting thread :-)

Lets not forget that it all comes down to a shutter/aperture combination. Lets say tou want f8/2s. It doesnt matter (at least not to me) if I set this in M mode, If I set 2s in T mode or if I shift the program in P mode until I have that combination....

Whatever is most convinient to do and gets me the result I want works for me....

Yes there are shots where I just use M mode but there are enough times when P mode is fine with a little shift to selcect a faster shutterspeed.
As you said P with program shift does EXACTLY what any other mode
would do.... IF I want a long shutter speed i can use T and select

you would loose---- don't play the lotto.

P-mode are for those learning photog and need to be handheld during
the learning process.

If the camera can think for me and decide exactly what I want to
achieve, then I too would use P-mode. LOL

Is this clearer???
No, because it would make you wrong. I'm sure that wasn't your intention.
