setting the focus box size.

I WISH they would provide a paper manual! Trying to navigate a PDF on a tiny netbook is a real pain!
Use the search function. Every PDF reader worth anything has it.

I downloaded a bunch of PDF manuals and loaded them on my iPad, It's so much easier to use that way.

Maybe the netbook is the problem?

As soon as you try and use AF normally though it has reverted. That method is unsable in my view, I just hope the other method is actually working.

Touch screens are a menace.
Hi Louis
Do it your way . . . and then use the touch screen to confirm (it does stay)
with the touch screen set so that it simply focuses where you touch the screen, you'll get a slider on the right side that will adjust the size of the focus box after you've touched a spot. This is the only time when I can actually see the focus box change size.

when I turn the dials during manual focusing I see the focus assist zoom is changed but it doesn't show the auto focus box as having changed in size.
Excellent - thank you - sorted

Is this easier than using the touch-screen to select where you want it to focus?
Set S-AF+MF (why would you not?).
Turn the focus ring and then spin either control ring.

Sorted!

Now, about the blasted bracketing...
Having had the camera grab the background persistently yesterday I want to fix the focus point smaller and keep it like that (I know that will give trouble in low light, fine, price worth paying). Is there a way of doing that?

If you are using the EVF : of course, you can keep your eye in the EVF.
Set S-AF+MF (why would you not?).
Turn the focus ring and then spin either control ring.

Sorted!

I uploaded the PDF manual to Office Depot and had them print a copy of it for me. $12.00 is what it cost and it was well worth it IMO.

It would be great to see this tested. I'd do it, but I'm skeptical that I'll get meaningful results.

I'd like to know whether the zoomed-in focus area is taken into account when the zoomed-in focus box isn't showing. That would seem sort of strange to me - to show the normal autofocus box but apply the finer, zoomed in setting. Means you have to eyeball what you're actually focusing on.

I've noticed that, with the zoomed in autofocus box on, it's not possible to cycle into the levels or highlights/shadows view in the EVF or touch screen. The behavior I would prefer is to be able to leave the zoomed-in autofocus box on, so it's easier to see exactly where your autofocus area is, but also allow you to cycle through the levels and highlights/shadows views.

Oy! Set the magnify button to magnify and just press it twice.

On the 12-50mm u can set the LN button for that and it would be instantaneous. Pity it's the inky lens with that button right now.

Hello Louis,
Anyway, at least the focus point issue is sorted. We must try and deal with bracketing tomorrow! There must be a way...
The bracketing issue was my primary complaint and reason for wanting to upgrade from my E-PL2. After pre-ordering an EM5 I downloaded the PDF manual and studied it carefully, hoping that bracketing would be improved. But after thorough reading and later some questions to early EM5 testers, I concluded that it was pretty much the same. When the GH2 price dropped to $749 I ordered one and cancelled the EM5. The GH2 isn't the perfect camera, but it's an absolute dream compared to the E-PL2, which is now sold. Oly's arcane ergonomics for bracketing is beyond comprehension for me. Perhaps the designers don't actually use cameras...

I wish you the best and hope you'll find an acceptable solution.

Regards,
Clayton

As I wrote previously, it takes, at most, two clicks and a roll of a dial to get it back when you turn the camera on, so not hard to re-enable it when you turn the camera on.
It takes just one touch on screen to get focus point to magnify size.
I usually use EVF, and it usually only takes one touch of the multifunction button, since I usually leave multifunction set to magnify.

At the most, it takes two clicks and a roll of the dial, if multifunction was set to something other than magnify.

Thanks Cosmoxl & Micksh6
It's so simple when I'm shown the way!
Good to see your post Jono I haven't seen you around for quite a few years!

You need to touch that screen only once, before you put that EVF against your eye.

There is an alternate way of doing things which would yield the same result :

1) configure your E-M5 AEL/AF mode to be 3 for both SAF and CAF. Set Fn1 or FN2 or whatever button you prefer to be the AEL/AF button. Set the focus to be on hold. Now one pressure of that button will achieve focus and keep it in memory, so unless you press the button again the focus will remain the same. A half pressure of the shutter will meter the light of the scene after you have recomposed the shot. To take the shot release the shutter fully. That is my usual way of shooting. With this set up you can get wat you want, although not in the same display.

2) this means now you can use the green box target display and use the magnifier. When you have the right size for the target use the Fn button to focus using the magnifier. Focus being set on hold, it would be memorized.

3) switch to the level display with the info button; adjust your frame to be level after you have recomposed, meter the scene with the half press of the shutter and fire.. You can even take other frames with different views of the same subjects, as long as the distance to subject doesn't change you don't need to refocus.

Best way to find out if the small field is still active when not shown is to go and look for a close up scene, where you'd need the small field to focus on a specific detail and the bigger field is distracted by something else with more contrast.

Will have a chance to talk to an Oly rep today and mention the fact that you cannot display histogram, Highlight/Shadow warning ... when in magnify mode.
