In May I had to pay for the flash on my S9500 to be fixed. The flash fired every time a photo was taken - even when the the flash was down (and supposed to be off). The camera (purchased in December 2005) was out of warranty and although I argued that this fault could hardly have been caused by my use of the camera (which was VERY well cared for and had not really taken all that many photos - maybe 1200 at the time) I had to pay for the repair.
Recently, I noticed that the camera was not playing any sound through the inbuilt speaker (whether that be videos, memos, shutter noise, or beeps) even with the volume on maximum. However, sound was being recorded - it played fine on videos on my PC. I know the sound playback was working before repair, but only noticed last weekend that it was no longer. I contacted the chap that repaired my camera last time at Fujifilm NZ and indicated that I was very disappointed to have had to pay for the previous repair and doubly disappointed at the prospect of paying for this one and, maybe, for the command dial to be repaired one day when it failed (as has been a common problem with this model although mine has been fine to date). I was asked to send the camera in and it would be fixed free of charge. It reached Auckland overnight, was repaired and dispatched (I'm told) the day I after I sent it away and I should get it back today (it's now after midnight) - within 3 days. What's more, I was bold enough to ask if I could have a copy of the Hyper Ultility software that comes "free" with the S9600 (but was not supplied with the S9500). I don't know if the firmware has been upgraded (it was 1.02 when I sent it away) - time will tell.
Assuming the camera arrives back safely later today, I'm now very happy with this service. The $100 I paid for the flash repair now does not seem so bad given that the sound has been fixed, the command dial assembly replaced and the Hyper Utility software provided. My faith in Fuji has been restored, although I do think that the faults have been inherent in the camera rather than a result of my treatment of it - it still looks to be in mint condition - which is of some concern. However, I find the S9500 is an excellent camera and enjoy using it. I also still have an MX700, S602z, and an A500 (my daughter has one of these too). After this experience I may consider an upgrade when the model after the 9600 is released.
