S9500 mysterious firmware upgrade

Hi

I have owned this camera since March 2006 now and logged about 5000 frames on it. Love everything on it and could'nt be bothered with a DSLR. The command dial went south without notice 2 weeks ago while in Chile - most dissappointing. It is in the shop for now - will see what comes back and beware of firmware upgrades. Anyone have a real, permanent fix for the command dail issue?

My S9500 was today returned from Fuji Australia Digital Service
Centre with repaired command dial (A$130 charge and an annotation
COMMAND DIAL PROBLEM NOT RECOGNISED AS MANUFACTURING FAULT BY FUJI
JAPAN) but also with an intriguing job description: " replaced
listed parts (Assy Case Top S9500), upgraded firmware".

Upgraded firmware? Indeed firmware version shows on the camera as v1.03

I thought that the current firmware version for S9500 was 1.02? An
upgrade to 1.03? Upgrade to what funactions exactly? Why on the
quiet? Is it a harbinger of a successor camera?

My U.S. version S9000 command dial was repaired free of charge in August, my firmware is version 1.02

Exactly the same situation here. Command dial stoppet functioning while on holiday in Spain. My S9500 still on warranty, waiting since 22.10.07 to be fixed. Now I worry I'll be faced with a bill.

The S9x00 command dial problem is a long established one which has been covered extensively in other threads here and at other websites.

Various solutions have been arrived at incl;uiding one, I think, involving re inforcing the shaft of the old, broken knob.

But this thread really is about firmwares for this series of cameras so one question.... has anyone found out about an upgrade to a version higher than v1.02 ?

In May I had to pay for the flash on my S9500 to be fixed. The flash fired every time a photo was taken - even when the the flash was down (and supposed to be off). The camera (purchased in December 2005) was out of warranty and although I argued that this fault could hardly have been caused by my use of the camera (which was VERY well cared for and had not really taken all that many photos - maybe 1200 at the time) I had to pay for the repair.

Recently, I noticed that the camera was not playing any sound through the inbuilt speaker (whether that be videos, memos, shutter noise, or beeps) even with the volume on maximum. However, sound was being recorded - it played fine on videos on my PC. I know the sound playback was working before repair, but only noticed last weekend that it was no longer. I contacted the chap that repaired my camera last time at Fujifilm NZ and indicated that I was very disappointed to have had to pay for the previous repair and doubly disappointed at the prospect of paying for this one and, maybe, for the command dial to be repaired one day when it failed (as has been a common problem with this model although mine has been fine to date). I was asked to send the camera in and it would be fixed free of charge. It reached Auckland overnight, was repaired and dispatched (I'm told) the day I after I sent it away and I should get it back today (it's now after midnight) - within 3 days. What's more, I was bold enough to ask if I could have a copy of the Hyper Ultility software that comes "free" with the S9600 (but was not supplied with the S9500). I don't know if the firmware has been upgraded (it was 1.02 when I sent it away) - time will tell.

Assuming the camera arrives back safely later today, I'm now very happy with this service. The $100 I paid for the flash repair now does not seem so bad given that the sound has been fixed, the command dial assembly replaced and the Hyper Utility software provided. My faith in Fuji has been restored, although I do think that the faults have been inherent in the camera rather than a result of my treatment of it - it still looks to be in mint condition - which is of some concern. However, I find the S9500 is an excellent camera and enjoy using it. I also still have an MX700, S602z, and an A500 (my daughter has one of these too). After this experience I may consider an upgrade when the model after the 9600 is released.

I paid AUD 130 in October 2007 to have a failed command dial fixed on my S9500 by Fuji Australia. The job docket said "changed parts, upgraded firmware", the parts were listed as TOP ASSY, firmware showing on camera is version 1.03, which theoretically does not exists, but in reality works quite well.

It would be great if it was confirmed that this is real, available to download and does indeed improve performance (unlikely since Fuji have no ears).

I am about to invest in a Pentax K10D, if this upgrade is real and as reported it might stop me.

I ask anyone with any further information to please keep this link updated.

Cheers

As a follow up: I am very glad to inform all those with the similar problem, that the command dial was fixed, no questions asked, the warranty was totaly respected. My S9000 is like new again.

In this forum several weeks ago this subject was worked over. The conclusion was tentatively reached that the Firmware 1.03 on the S9000/S9500 was the same as Firmware 1.0 on the S9100/S9600.

I am not confirming this to be TRUE, just noting the consensus in Sept/Oct 2007 on this issue. My S9100 bought in Aug 2007 left for the shop (auto-focus dying) with Firmware 1.0 on it. I hope it returns VERY soon and will report what it says for Firmware version then.

I seem to recall that on a Minolta camera I had for a while it was possible to extract the firmware from the camera on to a memory card.

To install it I think a second file was required which the camera read first then uploaded the firmware file.

It had been hoped that it might be possible to extract the firmware from a 9600 and try it in a 9500 but so far no postings have covered this.

Here's hoping for a responce and further thoughts on this as it would end the curiosity once and for all and might even lead to an imporved firmware for the 9x00 series of cameras.

is there any Fuji s9600 firmware update ?

quick googling did not find it.

please inform if any

Thanks

Interesting,

I looked at the index and the 9500 is not listed for an upgrade of the firmware, but your link shows the upgrade for the 9500. Where did you find it?

My S9100.9600 was purchased in Aug 2007 in USA.
The focus motor (or something similar) failed.
It took 3.5 weeks to get it back from main USA service depot in Edison, NJ.
The firmware still says 1.00

We have had nothing but clouds and rain for the 5 days it has been back. I hope to get some sun on Friday to put it through its paces. I had lots of trouble with focus on the long end of zoom, so maybe this will be better (one foggy day picture looks pretty good, but colors were obviously very flat).
