Hi. Just ordered the R1 and am wondering about using an external flash with it. I have a Vivitar 285HV and used that with my 717 I used to have. Would it be better to go with the HVL-F32X? I see it can automatically detect the exposure needed from reading Sony's site. Right now I am used to using Canon's flashes, does the HVL-F32X work as well as those for adjusting the exposure of the flash or is it better to stick with a flash like the Vivitar that you can just adjust yourself manually? Tried doing a search but it's down right now.....

Hi,

I used the Vivitar 283 flash and it was okay. I think the Sony one would be better. The Vivitar is more for film than digital. I didn't like it. It didn't go with the settings on my R1. It was almost a disaster when I took some pics for some friends at a wedding. Some of the shots were good, but overall, I'll never use the Vivitar with my R1 again. I'm selling it.

the F32X works very well with the R1 and can work auto or manual. I like it.

Some folks like the 383.

It has 3 modes of operation. In manual, you have total control. I think it bounces pretty well but have gone to using the Mini-Omni Softbox.

The Sony 32X refresh time is extremely long at high output. I've tried 4 sets of fully charged 2500mah Energizers, and at max output, refresh time was over 15 sec. Something to consider.

Really? Oh no! That's what I hate about the R1 and hated about the H1, the flash recharge time is way too long. It sucks!

Does anyone know then which flash would be good for the R1 that the flash refreshes really fast?

recycle @ full power is between 3 to 5 seconds using Sanyo 2700 batteries
using TTL = 0.5 to 1 second average.

Please dig some more in this forum there are several valuable info about this flash and R1.

Good luck

Only if you can switch it to manual mode. You've as much chance of using it in auto mode as you have of fitting (say) a Nikon lens to a Canon camera without an adapter.

Mecablitz 54MZ-41 or 44MZ-2 with the appropriate SCA module.

15 seconds? Wow. That is an awfully long time to wait to take another shot.
Thanks for the info.
