Quick Studio Portrait with D-70 and studio strobes.

OK Yves,

I'm not into portraits (don't know enough about them) but here goes....

1/ Need a little more space above her head.

2/ to me, her face is pointing down a little too much.

3/ lighting looks good. No harsh shadows.

4/ sharp where it counts, her eyes.

My opinions only. Others may know better.
This is during the session but with her sister Sophie.

Ignore the pricks that run rampant on these forums, I have hope that there are a few sensible and good willed ones out there.
Keep licking... that's what RN's do the best.
Matt
Nice picture.

However, for a professional photgrapher and a person who says he
teaches photography:

a. bad framing, no esthetic reason to crop her right arm and leave
a dead space on her left side (right side for viewers)

b. white balance is off (as suggested by Victor and Dan), the
shooter who comments on Pringles and ExpoDisks should have done
better, or at least fix it in postprocessing..

c. For a studio shot where meticulous attention to detail is
warranted, the shooter should have noticed that the bra straps and
the left side of the bra under current lighting conditions are less
than adequate. Get her to wear a strapless bra or not a bra at all.
Don't worry if you are a conservative North American, the nipples
won't show !

d. Double flash reflections in her eyes are VERY distracting and a
no no for studio photography. There is no technical reason
whatsoever to have 2 front sources in such a simple shot,

e. Don't make your subjects stand with an angle to the background
as you did here. The background on her right side is different than
the background on her left side, both in terms of focus and
illumination. This is not pleasing for a studio shot.

To comment on Mr Clark Hampton's question, "quick portrait"
probably refers to a "quicke" where the shooter does not want to be
criticized for details. "Quick because I did not really have time
to post it ... :-)" is meaningless, don't post it then, there are
dozens of people who see you as a Photo God here, feel some
responsibility.

Mitch

Blaklynx,

I definitely understand your points and respect your ideas. I agree with you that I have somewhat decreased the validity of my points by choosing a harsh rhetoric. However, after so many posts, still, I haven't received a response to my points from Yves.

I am not a pro photographer either, but I am in a very close field where I evaluate directors of photography for the movie industry. I would definitely check your pictures and post my humble opinion. In my out-of-work life, I shoot portraits for fun with a D2h.

Thanks again for your comments and logical points.

Best wishes

critic
I'm glad that you've understood my points.

My message isn't about an attack on you, or anyone else for that
matter. I just want people to get along and learn from each other.
The worlds already complicated as it is.

Keep your criticisms coming. You seem to have a good eye and you
can make some good points. It's all about learning.

In fact, if you do a search under my name, I recently posted a few
photos over the last few days. Comment on them if you wish. I don't
take offence to negative comments, or positive ones for that
matter....lol..... (boost my ego, I don't mind....lol...)

I'm no pro. Just an eager "amatuer". I love photography as a hobby
and like to share a thought or a photo every now and then.

I don't have the high pitch voice though, rougher ...

I stopped playing about 8 years ago, my lungs could not endure the
bar's smoke anymore.

4 Marshall heads (valve) with twin 4X10 inches on each
Couple of Strats (w floyd Rose)
An Old Les Paul with original paint (63)
A few Rack mounts of effects (but I like the plain sound of the
Marshall's)
I like it too. Played in a heavy metal band for 4 years in Canada.
Not the super grunge heavy but popular heavy (Black Sabbath, Rush
-0lder stuff-, Zepplin, Ozzy, and some progressive rock as well.
....in a rock/heavy band too. Guitar. Original music. Love the old
stuff as you've stated and prog rock as well. Heard of Dream
Theatre? Love 'em.

Anyway, it's way off topic. Email me if you want to talk more about
the music experiences, equipment and so on. I'm trying to get a
music studio at home happening.

I can't believe we have something else in common..... What a
laugh....lol...

You are one of my most respected posters on this board. I get your message, and remain.

I smell something under the cover of words... It smells like envy.

Yes, it is a set-up shot. The point was IMHO the capabilityies of
D70...

No need to put Sheakspear to rest.

phototech,

I understand your point, and as I said in my post, you may think that each one of us is responsible for their own decisions. However, I do not agree with the point that others who have influence have no responsibility, and therefore respectfully disagree with your comment. Regardless, thanks for posting.

Mitch
people saying UAW!! nice shot, very good!....

Hey, Yves, tell them to slow down and i agree with someone about
your responsabilities here...
I have no responsability here, with you or anyone else.

Sorry to say.

Boy, someone posts a bad shot and suddenly he becomes an alien ...

Thx ...

I did crop it this way as a personal preference, the untouched image will be looked at by the agent, I am not chosing any of the pictures for the casting, I just take them ... ( he will have around 150 shots vbetween her and her sister)

The head is down because it gives this little girl some attitude (she was very shy when she came in the studio) but I see and respect your point.

just caught up in the mood that exists here in the US recently, I'm one too, sorry.
I don't want to start a language debate, but I think you're off the
track right now.

BTW can you comment our pictures in french...

PS. Yes, Yves is one of my friends, and this is not the main reason
why I enter in this thread. Some respect is needed here.

Thanks.

I did not want to insult you, unless you see us (the readers) as idiots who will praise anything you post, even less than mediocre. I asked you some legitimate questions, maybe not nicely worded but still valid, and you have not yet responded. Regarding the French culture, sorry, you are the greatest on Earth.

Mitch.
No need to put a whole culture down for one that pisses you off ...

Show your real identity, we'll talk.

Friends, I have, do you have any ?
Mitch
Maybe we can all learn from you after all.

That would be great to share your knowledge.

...eyes are an amazing green colour. It's the first thing that hit me.

Is that a sign of a good photograph? Or is it that some people are lucky?Well, I'm not going to start a debate about this.....lol....

Good luck with this work.

You really have a way with words ...

You said you have another username and I critiqued your pictures before, why play the double face BS then if you stand strong enough. BTW, I have answered your questions already, the ones that neede to be answered anyways.

I don't hide in a fake account, I stay and respect myself, why don't you do the same ?
Mitch.

Matt, I already asked the question but I doubt we will get a honnest answer from someone that plays double face ...
my shots to learn from me. [NB:you have already seen and commented
positively on my shots, if that makes you feel better].
Mitch: I thought you said you were new here?? True sign of a coward
to switch screen names when the heat is on.. who will you be
tomorrow??

Critic,

I have my doubts about some of the professions posted in the profiles of some members here, but I have no doubt that your being honest about yours. "The usual suspects. Snatch. Pulp Fiction. 13 conversations about one thing. The Shawshank redemption" Great movies.
