Hi all,

I've just finished my new noise reduction filter and I would like to offer it to all my friends here on the forum... I'm including the download link in this message along with the user/pass combo - it will work for about 24 hours while you all download it. It was very hard to try and find a good balance between reducing noise and keeping details - how do you know if one black pixel somewhere is noise or if it's really an important detail? Anyway, I think I've got it down really well.

Thanks, Dave. I just tried this on a scan I happened to make yesterday. It's from a 30-year old B&W negative taken in Yosemite. The film was Plus-X Pan and I have no clue what the ISO was (I think it was called DIM back then, not ISO). The scanner is an old HP Photosmart so it's not a fantastic scan but was scanned at 2400 dpi. The samples are just small pieces of the original. For comparison, I also tried the PSP7 Edge Preserving Smooth and went into Photoshop to apply Fred Miranda's Noise Reducer (isoX) (which is an action and unfortunately doesn't work in PSP7).

Seems like a fine piece of coding. I'll have to do some comparisons with the Mirand plugins, which I use.

Did you notice that if you zoom in on the preview, it takes lots longer to generate the preview?

Yeah, I have noticed that thing about zooming in and I'm not sure why it's the case. I use a plugin compiler called "FilterMeister" (if you've ever looked at the Adobe plugin SDK it's a total mess - FilterMeister takes all of the nitty gritty out of it). I think it might be because at a preview that's zoomed out you have a small number of pixels to do since it's been resampled and as you zoom in it has more and more pixels to take care of (in other words, I think when you're zoomed in it actually applies the filter to the entire image, not just what you see in the preview window - that way if you move around while zoomed in, the preview window doesn't have to redo the filter). Not sure, but that's just a guess...

I too have used Fred's excellent filters and have a great deal of admiration for them. You'll have to let me know how my new one compares!

I'm actually doing a small radius form of bilateral filtering. Inside the filter there is an algorithm that tests pixel x for it's closeness to pixel y in terms of both proximity and color space. It does this for blocks of pixels (and then reduces the block size on the fly for each pixel) at a time. Unfortunatly, some sacrifices had to be made in order to keep the speed up with bigger images. The most I sample is a block 5x5 large - I've experimented with bigger blocks (up to 10x10) and there is a direct tradeoff with how much detail you can preserve and noise you can eliminate vs. block size and thus speed...

Would you folks on here like the filter to be rebuilt with a user option to use a bigger radius and thus increase time but eliminate more noise and preserve more detail? It wouldn't take much time...

aruzinsky -

Out of curiosity, what filter or action did you use on the image - and how long did it take? The results are very good and I'd love to be able to do some more comparisons and possibly enhance my results...

Dave,

I program my own image processing software for personal use. I programmed Gaussian Bilateral Filtering completely from the description given in the link that I gave. For the image below, I used an intensity standard deviation of 0.015 (relative to a maximum of 1, not 255) and a spacial standard deviation of 10 pixels (support is 1 + (6 standard deviations)) and I repeated 3 times. I don't worry about time. Glad to help. If you click on my name, you can read all of my posts and see more examples of my image processing.

I for one don't mind spending more time to get less noise and more detail

Thanks Dave

Dave,

I would also be very interested if you could duplicate the same type of results seen in the aruzinsky post. Even if it takes longer. Than you for your efforts.
Kind Regards

Do you happen to have this procedure in the form of an action for Photoshop 6.0

Thanks for making this available - i found it very useful.

I would like the user option to take more time to create a less noisy image.

Thanks,

Here's what Corel PhotoPaint could do. I used Smart Blur plus a couple of little tweaks. It took about 30 seconds.

Absolutely. Time for control is an acceptable tradeoff.

Hi Dave,

I just tried to download it and got a screen requiring a password.
Is it no longer available?

Also, does it work in PSP 7?

thanks!

Hi Dave,

how must the downloaded file be used ?
Does it run under Photoshop 5.5 or 6.0 ?

Luc -

It runs under any version of Photoshop (including programs like Paint Shop Pro) but must be run on a PC. To use it, just put it in your Photoshop's "plugins" directory on your hard drive. You'll be able to see it in the Filters menu the next time you start Photoshop.
