new firmware..Oly

Seems there is new firmware as of today....EM1X OMD1m3 OMD1m2 OMD5m3 OMD10m4
  • Possible to use focus stacking photography with "M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm F4.0 PRO".
  • Improved precision of focus when using single-focal-length lenses.
All the cameras include both EXCEPT the E-M10 IV -- it only includes the 2nd one.
I don’t think the E-M10 IV supports focus stacking, so the first one is not applicable.

some people unintentionally 'rock' backwards and forwards slightly when pressing the shutter. less likely with back or other button focus. with long lenses this can make a difference. which is why maybe that caf is better. worth testing on a tripod.
My tests are with the camera clamped to a heavy support (far more stable than the best tripod) with at 2 second delay between shutter press and exposure. CAF shows zero average focus error, SAF consistently (with and without both TCs on the E-M1.2 and E-M1.3) a very small but consistent front focus as well as larger focus variation. I am relatively sure it is not a problem with my 300mm since it shows no average error with CAF based on the focus steps and PDAF. I only use SAF with the 300mm f4 if there is too little illumination or detail for the lens to focus.

How peculiar... "Improved precision of focus when using single focal length lenses". What could have brought this on?
Interesting, alright. Do I recall correctly S-AF uses CDAF? Perhaps they improved S-AF on the new camera and are back-upgrading earlier models?

Will install and see what's what.

Cheers,

Rick
I have a Pro shoot this weekend, so will wait until after then. It is even more interesting that the EM10.4 and EP7 gets the update... CDAF only bodies.

I am hoping to see an improvement with my 300 Pro... current focus accuracy is not as good as I would like.
The update note refers to focus precision not accuracy.

Even without Japanese to English translation errors the two terms are often used and misused interchangeably with the correct usage often depending on the context.

Accuracy of focus usually refers to correctness - front or back, and precision refers to how finely you can place focus on a small point - eg eye instead of head.

Exactly which OMDS is referring to here isn’t clear, but I’m hoping it’s the ability to pick out a small target without the camera grabbing focus onto something else nearby.

Why this would be specific to prime lenses and whether it’s a PDAF, CDAF, S-AF or C-AF thing or some combination is anybody’s guess.

My guess is that it’s a bug fix, and perhaps specific to certain lenses, not a performance enhancement.

not "certain" lenses.

there is no mention of Micro Fourthirds, so should we then expect that this improvement also applies to 4/3 prime lenses since they are explicitly support by these cameras?

Once gain this might be a language translation thing.

M3 done...took 5 min...no problem

X done...took 10 min
Where does it say improved precision focus?

Perhaps I'm being stupid, but when I look on the OMDS website to update the firmware on my E-M1X it lists the latest version as 2.2 dated 19 July 2021.

Confused. (Not unusual.)

I'm confused right with you. The most recent Em1 mark III I see is 1.2 I found info that says what the 1.5 will do, but have not found anywhere to download it yet

I had to go into the app on my phone, clicked look for updates and version 1.5 came up for my M1 markIII

Your point about language is well taken. In science and engineering, precision often refers to repeatability, i.e., how close all the measurements are to each other. They may or may not be accurate in the sense you described, but precise means they are close to each other. Applied to AF performance, accurate would mean that the camera focuses at the correct distance, while precise would mean that it focuses consistently at a given distance whether or not that is the correct distance.
Exactly which OMDS is referring to here isn’t clear....
True. It would be nice to know.

I upgraded through Olympus Workspace and the associated .txt file documents this and all previous updates (most of which accommodate minor lens additions or add video peripherals). My E-M1iii was back on FW Ver 1.2, so this was a three-update jump.

I've now upgraded both my cameras to the latest firmware through Workspace. Seemed to go ahead without a hitch. It's just that the OMDS website hasn't been updated to list the most recent firmware versions.

I have better luck at the Oly Japan site, which to their credit does include the 2-28-22 updates.

Everybody else is still having coffee.

They seem to be first to roll out new manuals, too.

Cheers,
