Hi Shutterbugin
I batch process my NEFs without going through the ACR window as the final step in the raw conversion process, and I suppose stuart may be doing the same thing.
For each file, I open it open into the ACR window and do all my tweaking, WB and exposure adjustment and so on. Instead of proceeding into PS proper (i.e. converting), I just Alt-click OK (i.e. "Update"), and that just saves the changes I've made and goes back to the File Browser, ready for the next NEF to tweak in the same way.
I do this for all the NEFs I want to convert, so that they are "ready to go".
At that point I run my batch, and there is now no need to go through the ACR window again, cos it's already done. In my batch action I also do some other things too, like run Neatimage and 10D Sharpener, so there's a fair amount of processing to do, as well as the basic raw conversion.
That way, I can just let it run and go off and do other things. The time spent doing the manual tweaking at the start is kept to a minimum by holding back any of the actual image processing to the later batch when I don't have to be sitting there.
Hope that explains it!
Mike

My smugmug coupon code: lcvdCTMPuQYro
I have roughly 300 5-6Mb NEF files I wish to convert to Tiffs or
JPEGs etc.
I wish to automate this task.
How can I do this???
I've tried in CS, but the Camera RAW window always opens and
requires the OK button to be clicked!!
