Seems to me I recenlty saw a thread where someone mentioned that Adobe has a new download for Nikon D70 which takes care of converting raw files from Photoshop, but I can't find the thread anymore and I don't see the download on Adobe's site. Can anyone enlighten? Thanks so much. New D70 owner & trying to get it right!

I have roughly 300 5-6Mb NEF files I wish to convert to Tiffs or JPEGs etc.

I wish to automate this task.

How can I do this???

I've tried in CS, but the Camera RAW window always opens and requires the OK button to be clicked!!

The key to avoiding the ACR window popping up each time is to check the "override" option in the File Open options, ensuring that you have an open NEF step in your recorded action.

I wrote out the steps in the following post:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1006&message=12105824

... but bear in mind:

1) the instructions were from memory and may or may not be 100% accurate.

2) The basic instructions at step 12 tell you NOT to check the "override" open file option -- because the person I was replying to specifically wanted the ACR window to come up each time. Hopefully I make it clear elsewhere that you SHOULD check that option if you don't want the window each time.

HTH,

Mike

Ahh brilliant, I'll try this tonight.

I'm completely won over by RAW. I've just been in Nepal, and got some pics of Everest etc which are slightly cr4p. A couple tweaks and there fine. I love it!!!

Yep, raw rules. It's amazing how easily you can recover a duff exposure. And it's so easy to apply the same changes to multiple images, e.g. shot under the same lighting.... just adjust one and hey presto all your others are fixed too!

BTW, can you post back here to let me and others know if my batch processing instructions were OK, otherwise I may be leading many down the garden path!

Thanks,

Mike

If you read the original question and then your reply, in retrospect, how helpful do you think you were on a 1-10 scale?

All the views stated above are correct and unquestionable.

Mike, twice befor eI have asked on this forum how to use ACR in Batch without it stopping and no one ever answered. So thatnks for that. Unfortunately we have now just got our D2x and the D70 is taking a little bit of a back seat (but will still be used regulary) and ACR doesn't work at all for that camera...yet.
Is digital photography just moving from one problem to the next?

Glad to help, Jules, assuming of course that my information wasn't in fact misinformation ;)

I don't think you have long to wait for ACR 3.1, although it won't work for PSCS or below, only CS2 and Elements 3. Out of interest, do you know whether Adobe will continue releasing ACR updates (with new camera support) for CS and below, or is that their way of increasing sales of CS2?

Do a google on Dr Brown. He has ana mazingly generous web site and one of his freebies is a script that automatically converts raw files into jpegs. I use it all the time - it's very easy and works extremely well.

... you could try NV (Nikon View) as an alternative and the use PSE for followup PP. It's a freebie that is available on Nikon's website. It uses the camera's settings and custom tone curves as well. Just another option that's out there for you.

I'll misquote Donald Rumsfeld when I say,

Why would you want to skip this process? This window that comes up is where you do your white balance, and some exposure correction. Do you want to remove the possibility of tweaking your white balance? If you hit the ok button - then the image is opened in Photoshop, basically 'as shot'. That kindof removes some of the flexibility of shooting in RAW IMO.

Hi Shutterbugin

I batch process my NEFs without going through the ACR window as the final step in the raw conversion process, and I suppose stuart may be doing the same thing.

For each file, I open it open into the ACR window and do all my tweaking, WB and exposure adjustment and so on. Instead of proceeding into PS proper (i.e. converting), I just Alt-click OK (i.e. "Update"), and that just saves the changes I've made and goes back to the File Browser, ready for the next NEF to tweak in the same way.

I do this for all the NEFs I want to convert, so that they are "ready to go".

At that point I run my batch, and there is now no need to go through the ACR window again, cos it's already done. In my batch action I also do some other things too, like run Neatimage and 10D Sharpener, so there's a fair amount of processing to do, as well as the basic raw conversion.

That way, I can just let it run and go off and do other things. The time spent doing the manual tweaking at the start is kept to a minimum by holding back any of the actual image processing to the later batch when I don't have to be sitting there.

Hope that explains it!

Shutterbugin, you have obviously never prodessed a bunch of files. Which one day you will.

Having the programme stop and ask verification foreach file is a complete pain and not od any use for photographers batch processing loads of files and having a life and business to get on with at the same time.

I wanted to compliment you on your patient, detailed and competent answers.

I had the same question in my mind as did ShutterBugin, but as often happens in these threads he asked it and you answered it by the time I even saw the thread.

While I am not exactly a neophyte to digital processing, RAW files are in the area of my map with a legend that says "Here there be dragons."

Thanks, Mike. I am slowly getting acclimated to this forum and learning whose posts to read and whose to ignore without opening as a waste of time.

The other answer to his question is a perfect example.

D70, etc.

So;

1) The PS list of Actions works a treat. Thanks.

2) I am automating this initially coz the mother is moaning about never seeing my digital pictures. This way I have 400 little TIFFs on a CD, rather than 2GB of RAW files.

3) I will be going through all 400 images and tweeking them to my liking, but as I'm still feeling the affects of the holiday, I may give it a few days.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replys, I think RAW is brill and will continue to shoot everything in this format, hopefully I won't end up with another 400 to work with though!!

Glad the instructions worked out! I used to find the Batch processing window in PSCS a little bit like looking at the control panel for a nuclear power station --- complicated and potentially dangerous (it's easy to end up overwriting your original files --- unless they're NEFs). But I've gradually got used to what most of the various options do, although some things still remain a mystery.

Cheers,

Mike
