memory card error?

I was only getting the error after I snapped a few photos, then would be reviewing and i tried this.

if after you reformat it and it doesn't work reformat it again and after choose the create a new folder option. after I did that it seems to work fine after a few tries.

Before fixing it one thing I also noticed was that there were ghost images it couldn't display when I was browsing through the images. Very strange. I contacted Sony text support but they seem to not know of a fix after escalating a couple of times and at the end kept telling me to reformat and use different memory sticks if it persists.

Hope this works! Please let me know if this trick helped you!

My firmware is V2. I recently got another card which is a PNY 8GB Class 10 SDHC card, and that seems to work fine (for the last two days that is). Keep my fingers crossed until it happens again! However the old Adata card is dead. Can't even format it anymore. I think the low level formatting etc did it in. Calling it in for warrantee replacement, as I think it was dying anyway. Not sure why since I never used it that much and it was in a camcorder before and never had a problem.

I'm thinking the file system gets corrupted in the process, so definitely don't cut images directly from the card. However, in the past I was really only deleting images from the camera as I was reviewing before I even got to hook up to the computer after I formatted. Not sure why, but hope it's just a memory card problem like the tech support suggested.

I bought a NEX-5 recently. I was on europe vacation and took lots of pictures. I was using a Microcenter 4GB SD card. It was working fine until one day about 300 out of 312 pictures files vanished. When I plug the card in the computer to look at the properties which show about 1.4GB used but does not show anything beyond taht. Does nayone know how to recover those pictures?? Please help..THNKS

Try downloading the SanDisk or Lexar memory card recovery programs. I think you will be pleasantly surprised that your images are still there.

I wonder if this is related to memory card brand/age? Just trying to establish some logic here, why some people are having this trouble and others not? This did happen to me once with my 16 GB Apacer card, but no images were lost, just the error message, cured by simply switching the camera off and on again. Since then I have taken hundreds of images and all is fine, knock wood. I am still on the .01 firmware.

With my NEX-5 I used Sandisk Extreme III class 6 and class 10 8GB cards, and Transcend class 10 and class 6 16GB cards. Not one single problem ever. Yours must be a defective card.

Thanks, that worked perfectly, got all the pictures back.

Is it due to the camera or a cheaper brand of SD, I guess I need to be careful from now on.

Thanks Again

I ran into the sdcard error problem yesterday, good to find out I am not the only one!

Is there free version of the sandisk/lexar recovery programs? Could only find the versions that are around $40.

After a couple of dozen attempts (using usb and sd-slot of macbook), the count of unreadable images and movies went down from about 20 to 2. Those 2 movies, though, consistently refuse to copy.

For the record, my setup is nex-3 with a 8GB SanDisk Ultra II rated 15MB/s.

The card functioned flawlessly in a lumix cam for about a year, and it was formatted in the nex-3 prior to using it.

There are about 100 files on the card. Total shot count with that card and the nex-3 is around 800 since I got the nex a 10 days ago.
Still running v1 of the camera software.

Hm, even the sandisk tool didn't get my 2 lost files back. Since they were among the oldest files on the card, I guess they had been overwritten after the file allocation table got mixed up by the nex.

Too bad, I need to consider sending the nex back. I wonder whether I was just unlucky, picking a model with poor manufacturing tolerances.

Sorry to hear that you cannot recover you 2 files. (I got my sandisk tool free when it was included in a special package with a sandisk memory card.) Before returning your card, try another one. I have a card that works perfectly on other cameras but not the NEX 5. All other cards perform well.

Good luck.

I've seen a rare error on my Sanyo Xacti and A33. To clear it up I decied to wipe that card to nothing. Then reformat it in FAT32. Then reformat it again in the camera.

After using that card and then reformatting it in the camera again the problem seems to have left for good.

I suspect the probem may be caused when card writing is being hurried by changing modes or pressing buttons too early before the writing finished. That is going to cause a glitch. That is a design weakness and could be quite common.

So I would only use the quickest cards you can get and to not panic / rush setting changes after shots or video.
Hi,

I have now twice encountered problems with the NEX 5 that produces a "memory card error." I am using a card that I have used on a Nikon D80 without any problems. I have also write-read tested the card on my computer with no errors. The first "memory card error" occurred after about a dozen photos (JPEG and raw). I low-level formatted the card on the PC and then reformatted in camera. After about 150 shots (JPEG and raw), I ran into the problem again. When trying to download both times, my computer reports that either the directory or file is corrupt.

I will buy a new card, but I want to determine if the problem might be with the NEX.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? I tried a quick search of the forum for memory error but did not come with anything.

Thanks.

Now it´s my turn.
It seems the Nex-3 really has some weird incompatibity issue with memory cards.

I´ve been using 2 brands which I can find here and both fail sometimes, can´t trust them. But they´ve been working in Canon and Nikon DSLRs for a long time without problems.

The brands are Ridata Lightning Series 8 GB and Markvison Class 6 16 GB (a brand which seems to exist only in Brasil).

Today, using the Markvision card, I took some 10 pics and then it started acting funny.

A fact to be noted is that I used the menu to change the Custom Settings Button Definition and it seems the subsequent pics got corrupted and my card reader couldn´t read the last 5 pics.

I´ve loaded the card in the camera and it worked. Changed to play mode and it said "can´t display image" for those 5 pics but could show the test one I took.

Tried to format and the camera couldn´t and screwed the card even more, couldn´t use it anymore.

Then I formatted the card in the computer with HP formatting tool and it´s working in a Nikon D5000 normally.
Of notice is the fact that the only Sony SD card that I have never failed.

I suspect the problem arises from the contacts inside Nex being weak due to serve to SD and MS.

Best Regards
Eduardo

I also entered SD Memory Card Error with firmware v3 on NEX-5 yesterday. It worked flawlessly over past six months on Canon HF S11 camcorder and NEX-5.

The SD card I use is RiData Lightning Series 16GB class 10. I’ve tried format the SD card several times on Windows and NEX-5, but every time I pressed the ‘MOVIE’ button, the error message will be showed on the data writing stage.

Geee… I think I’ll have to buy another SD card. Do SanDisk SD cards have better compatibility on NEX?

Thanks,
jeffrey

Maybe unrelated but does anyone have advice for a read error with my ADATA 36GB memory card using a Sony A6000? Its freaking me out.

did you mean 32GB? try another SD Card, they are cheap, and rather error prone.

Yeah, probably. Im tired of taking off the leather base and popping it out to look at it, but I think its an ADATA 32G. It also says "adapter" on it. it came with a tiny version, too. I have no idea what that is or where it goes, or if they both need to go together, etc etc.

I try a new card today. I doubt the camera is defective, but that woudl be hilarious if it was after all this fuss. Hilariously cruel.
