Hi,

I am with latest Photoshop (and win 10 64bit pro), and it cannot open .cr3 files taken on a hired R6 Mk II

I seleceted 20 pics to open into raw, and instead got

'could not open the file due to a program error.

I try for one and same thing.

what is going on.

I am about to do a serious 3 day photoshoot and need to see the test shots, else £600 of gear and a trip of 5hrs is down the pan.

I dont believe this !

I also had to install from microsoft shop a thing that would show thumbs for .cr3, it now does, BUT HELLS BELLS ITS SLOW, each one appears half a second to so apart, takes ages.

What rubbish is all this ?

used to .Cr2 and functionality.

DBenz.

Have you tried Bridge or ACR?

Perhaps a little more detail about which version of PS exactly, and what the spec of your (obviously older - because it is still running Win 10, which is about to end support from MS) computer is might be helpful.

You could always use Canon's free DPP to view the shots, and it may not be any slower than what you have right now.

For reference, my Win 11, Core i5-12600K, 32Gb RAM, opening from an older 8Tb hard drive, displays 52x .CR3 thumbnails (from my R8, which has the same sensor as your R6 ii) in 6 seconds, so about 9/second. So Windows (even 11) isn't very fast at displaying thumbnails (unless they have been opened previously, where it seems to go faster) - even on a decently fast desktop with 32Gb of RAM - possibly the mechanical HDD is the limitation ?

You could possibly try using RAW-C to see if it speeds it up a bit ?

I don't know specifically because I still had .CR2 cameras when I upgraded my PC to Win 11, but I might guess that it may be more of a Windows thing than a PS thing, but I am happy to be corrected.

I know it doesn't help now (hindsight and all that), but there has been countless threads about software compatibilities (or lack thereof) with .CR3 since it was brought out years ago, and even more threads about PS (and LR and almost every other software) having compatibility issues for users with their new camera, even when still using .CR2 - so what you are experiencing is nothing new and seems to catch a lot of people.

Yes I wonder what latest version means to the OP.

If you are running CS6, it is no longer supported. I view in DPP, convert to DNG, and then view in Bridge, and post process in ACR, and Photoshop.

We have been using canon R5 and R52 for some years which use the CR3 format.

We have both the Adobe photo suite package and also complete package.

All relevant apps (so more than PS, LrC, LR) open CR3 files natively.

The canon R1 and R52 were added some time ago now.

Perhaps the issue is what Adobe software you are running.

You're not up to date.

Download and install the latest Adobe Camera Raw 17.2.

That the bit that opens the old and new raw files.
Just to be a pedantic nuisance, ACR 16.4 was the first to support R6II. :-)

Feel free to retouch any photograph I post in these forums. They probably need it. :)

What version of Photoshop are you running? The latest version is version 26, also called "Photoshop 25." The oldest version to open R6 Mark II files is Photoshop 24.

Let me take a wild guess. The OP has CS6. The last time it has an update was in 2018.

The latest Photoshop is not a stand alone software, you can not buy it anymore, available only via subscription from Adobe. The current version of PS is 26.5 with ACR 17.2.

But I guess we will never know. The OP pops up to whine then disappears.....

That happens from time to time. Sometimes that's OK too. I'm not saying this will happen on this thread but in the past posters start to complain about Adobe because they feel ancient software should be supported forever. It's the same for most software out there.

Also with subscription there is a CC icon that shows a red dot when there is an update available. It's why I'm guessing it's CS6.

Hi,

I then went to bed then had breakfast then tried to get metashape to process some test shots, failing badly on skin areas, then maths to see I need 17 batteries for a photoshoot with this R6 THING...as 400 pics per battery is BAD. no youtube review mentioned you need loads of them compared to 1 for a dSLR such as a 70D. (there again youtube reviews often useless, are not always mentioning everything one needs to know. )

then back here to see replies, . so give me a chance !

I have auto updates its 26.5 and the latest raw converter that comes with it.

having been on the blower to Adobe 25 or so times since instal to get it all set up as it should be, I am with what is needed.

Today they tell me ITS A KNOWN FAULT ! and revert me to 25.0

then we discover its also doing it, then we discover its a corrupt few .cr3 files made by this hire camera, and I have 11000 shots to do in one day, oh wonderful.

so now it does open .cr3

as for 'its a known fault' is it ?

I also have CS6 and hang onto it as its been 3 months of Pshop hell as what worked fine needs fixing in 26.5 as someone meddled with tools and settings.

The other day their update wiped out my colour settings and I was on sRGB and other things, and saw both RGB and sRGB at top of an image ! so I gave them merry hell as thats simply not on !

Very unkind and false

We should act like this here.

Person as an issue - try to solve it

Not sure how that can be a known fault. Myself and others have opened CR3 files using PS and not just on the R6II but all ML CR3 files. I've never had an issue since the R going back 5 years ago.

So the camera you rented is faulty. I'd talk to whoever you rented it from. Just in case are you sure it's not the card because that is typically the cause?.

Well I guess they enjoyed that. I'm not trying to say anything one way or another but this all started because of a faulty camera. Sometimes doing too many things can cause other unexpected issues. I know because I've been there and it's no fun.

Hope you resolve whatever is going on but it appears this is not Adobes fault.

I have 26.4, and camera raw version 17.2 (and have no trouble opening raw files from my R6mkII).

There's no updates available for me, and the latest release seems to be 26.4. I wonder how you got 26.5... are you on some kind of beta program?

I have 26.5 and I don't think it's beta. I typically avoid beta.

There was an update 2 days ago but I thought it was just the CC install app update. That often happens and it tells you that is the update you are getting. Maybe P updated as well.

I'm using Mac. Windows issues?
