If only Fuji had come up with something like this.

Ya :) I want the NEX-5 with 24mm (EFL) f2.8 prime lens. Sigh... what to do with my E-P1 and those adapters?

Perhaps, Fuji can make a quick and dirty solution. Using the core engine of F200, upgrade firmware for more user controls. Removal lens system based on Ricoh GXR sliding lens system and adapter for use of C mount lenses.

...how does it differ (as for the essence) from Micro 4/3??? Just another implementation of mirror-less interchangeable lens, Sony's style...
LARGER SENSOR! and an array of existing MF lenses (around 30)

Shorter flange distance than M4/3 18mm vs 20mm, easier to use lenses from other manufacturer. 3D Panning images. Lenses compatible with future SONY Camcorders.

humm..I kindah don't get it ..but then I am slllllllllloooooow

The whole attempt here is to downsize the cam yet upsize the quality of imagry ...but you still have the lens issue and no OVF..and really can't get all the way up to a true DSLR IQ.

This kind of camera would hold it seems an even smaller niche than the bridge cameras..unless like Panny almost has..they come up with a real kick butt superzoomer lens. Even then...the price deal is gunnah push people to think three times ..I would think ..
but TWDIK

Yes but no current 4/3 or Micro 4/3 can shoot usable ISO3200 images. I wish my E3 looked like the image below at ISO3200.

The new Sony’s are using APS-C sized sensors in a miniature body.

Paul.

NEX-3 @ ISO3200.

My money is on Fuji coming out with one using an EXR sensor. There's a gaping wide space at the top of Fuji's range now and they need to do something with this sensor.

...like put it on the shelf?.... I am affraid that since they went BSI CMOS path, that might very well signal an end for the high-end EXR cameras, or even EXR in general... Why bother and spend money & resources on development of two totally different technologies?

As for other replies - okay, the sensor size & legacy MF lenses compatibility is obviously different to m4/3, true ;).

But I've always had a problem with significantly bigger sensors in extremely small cameras... What is the point in miniaturizing the camera body, when the big sensor requires quite a big lenses (bar "pancake" primes)? Secondly - where did all my manual controls gone? ;)

it needs another volcano to erupt in Iceland.

Sony has a number of good APS-C lenses, including the excellent Zeiss 16-80/3.5-4.5, so what do they do? Make yet another crapola 18-55. Even so, it looks too large for the camera.

First to impress other people, you should have seen people mounting a BIG LONG white canon tele lens onto a white GF-1, COOL :)

Medium Small lens

As for manual controls.

See the zoom ring?
See the focus ring?

For aperture control on lenses without aperture ring, I need an adapter with aperture control, something similar to Novaflex. The one in the picture is for control of Pentax modern lenses which do not have aperture ring.

A perfect cam for sensor buffs. Have fun with it.

Around 700 bucks for a cam with a triple zoom...

And here is the list of things you can handle manually:

(end of the list)

Or did I miss something?

Here is a review, ending with a long list of pros and a long list of cons like "“Camera is noisy when shooting Panorama, HDR, and other multi-frame modes”

Sony has announced that the Cmount lenses will be usable on new HD video cameras... A lens mount system that bounces between camera and HD video camera... NOW you are talking!

Paul,
Good thread to get everyone thinking ahead.

And yes, those new Sonys are interesting, but I'll wait 'til DPR does their review. (Very surprised that DPR was snubbed by Sony on the introduction.)

Meanwhile, Sony's lenses and accessories are usually proprietary --- and therefore very expensive. It is no fun paying list price. But, they might prove their worth.

Also noteworth, Samsung has a new 3X zoom f1.8 compact on the horizon, 3" AMOLED screen that twists & turns, etc.. It is expected to retail for ~$500. Their NX10 was panned by many, but this one, the EX1 (aka TL500) could change their image. Several of our great Canadian neighbours report their first shipment is on the way to them. No word on US shipping, yet.

For those interested, here is a link to a Samsung demo on youtube:

Nice to have all these choices (if you've won the lottery) :-)

Gus, you mean E mount lenses? I was so excited when I saw the word 'C Mount lenses' for I have 2. C mount CCTV lenses not C mount movie lenses.

Panasonic is planning of doing the same thing. M4/3 camcorder. I guess those manufacturers whose business is making camcorders are working on similar thing.

Everyone seems to be jumping all over these, but take a look at the optical portion of the IR review. Also, look at the samples from Lenstip (lack of details especially with foliage).

http://www.lenstip.com/1828-news-Sony_NEX-5_-_sample_images.html

Sony may have sacrifices optical quality for the sake of a very short flange in front of a large APS-C sensor. For the P&S consumer looking for a better indoor camera this will not be a concern (hence the lack of controls). Sony is going after a certain market with these cameras and they will likely do well. Just don't expect great optical quality and therefore IQ at lower ISOs.

Here is one ISO200 shot from lenstip but all of the images there produced a similar result.

I thought that may have been the Kit zoom at 18mm as Sony Kit zooms tend to be far behind Canon, Pentax and Olympus but when I saw it was the PRIME I was horrified, the Panasonic 20mm F1.7 is considerably better than that at F1.7 (though it's no where near as wide), even Oly's 17mm Clunker of a pancake is better than that ......

I get the feeling that the most interesting things we'll see that sensor in will be the D95, D400 and Pentax KX MK2 if that's Sonys best shot at a standard wide prime..
