Having a real hard time trying to format. I'm not technically minded at all. Have tried to follow directions, have IB connected HD is showing up in window, red ready light on.... Not showing new drive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Running Windows 98.

Saw Vasa's post regarding connecting HDD to computer and that totally scares me....

Thanks in advance...Pam

Should not be scared. I heard that you can't format 40 Gig HDD with Windows program via USB. There were few posts about this here. The only way do do that is to get to computer shop and let them run Fdisk formating - that might cost you $ 10-20, and than install it in your Image Tank and off you go.

Hi Pam

Try this FDSIK is not that hard to run....

Yes you will need to FDisk it then format it, everything should work fine after that.

Instructions:

1. Attached IT to computer.
2. Start computer
3. Once booted open a MS-Dos window
4. Type FDISK and press enter.
5. It will ask if you want to enable Large Disk support. Answer yes.
6. A menue option will appear.
7. Optition number 5 shouldbe change current fixed disk....choose this.

8. This will list all your Physical hard drives. This number will depend on the number in your computer.

9. If you only have ONE HDD inside your computer you want to choose the second drive or the third if you have two HDD inside your computer.
10. On the next menue choose optition number one "Create DOS partition........"

11. It wll ask you if you want to use the entire space I would choose the default size (the entire drive).

12. It will go off and do some stuff and if I remember right tell you that you need to reboot the computer. If it doesn't after it finishes doing its thing back out to the main menu or hit ESC to exit fdisk.
13. Close your DOS window.
14. Reboot your computer.
15. Now attempted to format the HDD.....Things for you should become better.

Hi Jesus,

Should be, I don't run XP yet so I can not say 100% yes.

The steps posted in the other posts are the steps that have been used since the very early days of computers and I don't think they have changed for XP but you never know......go ahead and try it.....you can not hurt anything.

Dian,

I also have XP and just bought a 40gb drive for my image tank. When I first connected with the USB cable, XP recognized that the image tank existed but it had no drive letter. I went into the computer management section to format the drive, but the only option was to format as NTFS - not as fat32.

So I've formatted as NTFS (one partition) - but when I place a CF card in the slot, and click on CF, the image tank doesn't seem to be copying the files. The lights under HD and CF just blink. When I checked the drive, no files were there.

I've heard the IT doesn't recognize NTFS. SO - how does one reformat the 40gb in Windows XP to Fat32?

Dian - when you formatted the drive, did it format as NTFS or Fat32? How big is your drive?

Your and anyone's help would be great! New toy and I can't play with it!!!

My HD is 20gb. When I first plugged in it, there's no drive letter as you seen. When I use disk management, it allows me to format FAT32 though, which is what I did. You're right, the IT can only see FAT16 or FAT32. I'm not sure why your computer wouldn't let you format FAT32. Maybe you should try another computer and see if it's behaving the same way.

If you connect it to a Win98 machines, you can run fdisk and partition it into more than one partition.. BUT, if you connect the same drive to a WinXP machine, that machine can only see the first partition.

Hi Folks,

Just found this web site that has a partitioning(fdisk), formating util and it seems to work well.

Before I start, I checked a win2k box at work and could not located Diskpart on it. Just an FYI.

If you want this util goto to the following web site: http://www.insidecomputer.com/store/imagetank/support.html

and download it.

I also have a 40GB HDD in my IT and could partition it up into two seperate drives that the computer could see, but when I went to xfer a SM or CF to the second partition it would error out saying that their was not enough space. Go back and connect it to the computer and I could copy files to both partitions with no errors. I emailed Level Tech but have not heard back from them. But well checking the forums I came across this and figured I would try it. I've been xfering CF to IT to both partitions with no more errors.

Give it a try

Hi Mark,
Must be my working the whole weekend, but I'm confused.

Are you saying that after getting the 'disk full' error with the 2nd partition, you reconnected the IT to your computer. You copied files to both partitions - from the computer to the IT? or did you then disconnect from the IT and copy from the CF to the IT - as in it fixed itself magically? Please don't think I'm being sarcastic - just confused.

In other words, your IT is working fine now? You can copy to both partitions with a CF card?

Sorry if about the plethera of questions - lack of sleep and too much work.
And thank you for any help you give.

Thank you to everyone for your help. I'm finally back at my computer where I could download that partition software SwissKnife3 available from compuapps - I suggest getting the most up to date version 3.02:
http://www.compuapps.com/Download/swissknife/swissknife.htm

Here's what I did.

1) Previously, I had formatted the drive with the Disk Management XP tool as NTFS.

2) After installing the software, I rebooted the computer (it didn't seem to 'see' my image tank until I rebooted with the tank connected) - rebooting took a little longer because XP communicates with the Tank during the boot.

3) Hilite the USB Host Adapter - Select Partition and Quick Format. It saw 2 'drives'. I chose the first partition (the one that wasn't called Free Space), selected Hard Disk Format, Partition type: primary, File system: 32. - you might to do some clicking around to get Partition type and File system to be accessible.

4) And here's the important part - move that vertical slider bar down to 40 GB - it turns the disk from magenta to blue.

5) Click on Create. It will do the partition and format then ask you to reboot.

6) Voila, I rechecked under XP's disk management and the drive is ONE partition at 40 GB (+ -) as Fat 32. Tested it by unplugging the usb cable from the Tank, plugged in a CF card, hit the CF button, removed card, rreconnected Tank to computer and looked at drive. There are the photos!

Thanks again everyone for your pointers and help. Long live forums.

and download it.

I also have a 40GB HDD in my IT and could partition it up into two
seperate drives that the computer could see, but when I went to
xfer a SM or CF to the second partition it would error out saying
that their was not enough space. Go back and connect it to the
computer and I could copy files to both partitions with no errors.
I emailed Level Tech but have not heard back from them. But well
checking the forums I came across this and figured I would try it.
I've been xfering CF to IT to both partitions with no more errors.

Give it a try

Dian, I just that read that other XP folks have had similar issue
with their 40 gb drive - I'm guessing I need to find someone with
another version of Windos. So - I might have access to a Windows
2000 laptop with USB- do you know if fdisk runs on win2000?
Thanks - I know these are kinda dumb questions.
