Hi, I've bought a sony a7riii but I could change it with a7iv (add a lens I don't use in the transaction). What do you suggest? I think a7riii is good enough, the thing that concerns me most is the operating speed, but I haven't tried it yet. What do you guys think about it?

You can forgive a lot if the IQ is better. What matters to YOU ?

What I mean, is a bit slow to save multiple files or slow also in a normal situation with single shots? Do you suggest any SD card in particular to improve the saving?

No, mine are all golden oldies (Lexar 1667X).
I doubt if a card will make a lot of difference, the slow bit is in this family of cams.

I think the key decisions are 1) whether you prefer 42mpx or 33mpx. (Or indeed 61mpx - since you could potentially also consider the A7Riv - the model is a few years old and often on sale.) And 2) the operating speed.

You seem to have doubts about the A7R3's operating speed before you've even used the camera. I have an A7Riii and I find it fine. It powers on quickly enough for me. I've had no problems with its AF, though my photography doesn't involve difficult challenges (BIFs etc). When I've used bursts and video, I've had no problem with clearing or recording.

If the deal involves a lens you don't want, it's difficult for us to gauge how to respond to that. You may be better to return it with a change in bodies, or alternatively you may be able to sell it separately to your advantage.....

Thanks, it was just a doubt reading the reviews, but reading your experiences I think that the speed won't be a big problem for me...I'll use it mainly for reportage and street, sometimes sports but I needn't to take many shots for each action

Did you buy the A7Riii new? Whats the price difference to change?

I had the A7RIIIa and sold it for the A7IV. NO regrets, far better colours (imho of course, but simply liked it better).

Also found the AF on a different planet, the files were just gorgeous, less pixel, but nicer, again my view!!

Also from memory the A7IV had lossless RAW files.

Good luck with your decision! I personally would always chose the IV over the RIII, but that's just me.

if its stuff where single AF and single shots are needed then stick with the R-III its got a better sensor but if you need tracking AF which works and fast card writes then get the A7-IV ........ for another option, a used A7R-IV is a great buy if you want the AF but don` t need the speed as it has the Real time tracking AF of the A7-IV etc and you get that superb 60Mp sensor .

I have an A7-III as a backup to my work rig which has the same AF system as the A7R-III only more sensitive and covers the whole sensor - the 24Mp sensor is as good as they get for noise and the cam handles great but the tracking AF is so frustrating that I just use single point AF ..

A7iv every day.

A7iv every day.
I have both, the A7iv is a better camera overall. Only thing I like better on the A7riii is the smaller body (yeah, I know that's not a popular opinion), the sensor and the tilt screen. Focusing, color science, operation speed, write times, menus, video...

For a similar price, I'd get the A7iv no question.

Generally an A7-IV will cost 1.5X as much as an A7-R3 used at a dealer . if I was choosing between those two cameras only, I`d go A7-IV too because of the AF and the lag killing XR chip , the touchscreen is far more usable too but for a landscaper that AA-Free super clean base ISO 42Mp sensor still rocks hard.

Indeed, that's why I have mine 😃 the sensor is killer.

Don't know, I chose a7riii because in my opinion it's the best sensor of Sony, also better than RIV and RV. I find more details in the pictures compared to a7IV, also DxO mark put it first in its ranking, https://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/. and for me the picture quality is the most important parameter.

If AF is enough good it could be fine, I like it because it's also smaller than a7IV and probably built better, more resistant, but I have to understand if its size can be a problem for the grip. A7rIII was a flagship, a7iV not and for experience the flagships are built better.

Speed side...a7RIII shoots 8fps at 42mpx uncompressed raw up to 30 frames on uhs-II, a7IV only 6fps up to 30 frames of 33mpx Raw...so it wins in burst rate.

Said that I'm not sure that a7iv is a better camera, maybe it's better for AF tracking, video and menu, but for the rest it isn't better.

Does the A7Riii hold you back? Does it not do what you need it to do to fulfill your creative vision? If so, do it. If not, don't give in to G.A.S., just saying...

I followed your DXO link and found the A7RV better (by a smidgen) for portraits and landscapes. What makes the A7RIII better is the high ISO rating.

Much of a muchness - if you ask me - but to concluded from the ratings that the A7RIII is "better" might be a bit of a stretch:

What remains is the 42Mpx versus the 60Mpx sensor ...

My dislike for the A7RIIIa (had the "a") was the somewhat uneven white balance.

Your mileage clearly differs.

Also: the high ISO rating of the A7IV is a bit higher in my personal experience. DXO is all-over the place when it comes to identical sensors but to consider the 42Mpx A7RIII at 3523 versus the 3379 of the A7IV, then the A7RII at 3432 and the A7III from 2017 at 3722 ????????

Dunno this sound all a bit doobeeous to me, the 24Mpx A7III better than the A7RIII 42Mpx I can understand but the newer 33Mpx A7IV worse than the 42Mpx A7RII?

Am I reading all this wrongly?? Personal experience would still suggest the A7IV higher up than the A7III ... had them both.

Don't know how they compare but those are the results and the sensor of a7riii seems yet, in 2024, one of the best among all full frame cameras (100 points), a7iv sensor is lower in this ranking. I think that a7riii pics printed are better than a7iv pics because they have more details, something you couldn't be able to see on a monitor pixel peeping. Anyway the difference could be not enough for someone respect to a better tracking af. It depends by your needs. Is it a better camera? For someone yes, for others not. I think you needn't to update it at a7IV or a7Rx if you don't shoot birds everyday for you main hobby or make several trips in Savannah every year. It's the marketing that make you think that. Sony a7iv is a good general camera for all, the best for nothing because if you want speed you should buy a9ii, If you want video you should buy a7SIII. So maybe it's the best camera for enthusiasts.

The sports/low light rating is based on the minimum of 3 measurements. SNR, Dynamic Range and Color depth.

For me, I would compare the Print charts of SNR and Dynamic Range.

The A7RV lags in the dynamic range department for some reason. The rest of the carts seem practically the same when normalized for a print.

not in real life it doesn`t , it retains DR and colour depth at high ISOs beyond what you`d expect . better than the A7R3 even - had both too, at the time I expected more from the A7R3 given the DXO mark , my sample was a touch noisier than the A7R2 past ISO1600 too

The a7iv is the most used professional wedding/ event camera replaceing the a7iii which held that position before ,dont know where you think its a enthusiest camera. i just got home from a pro shoot video and stills backed up with my a6700.
