Took the M-10iii to an abandoned tunnel and came away with this shot, which with a little PP through DxO it turned out great. I was able to grab a lot of shadow detail and IMHO it's a great picture.

This was RAW, straight out of the camera, exposed more or less for the daylight.

Nice shot, but is there any reason why you didn't do exposure bracketing and then process as HDR? This is the very situation that HDR is intended for!

Sure - it's a simple answer - I forgot the tripod.

No need for a tripod. Handheld HDR works absolutely fine on Olympus cameras. I do a lot of shooting in churches, where you really need HDR to get both the dim interior and the much brighter stained-glass windows, and hand-hold for both in-camera HDR and exposure bracketing for external HDR processing in LR.

Cheers,

Chris

Highlights are - ugly. Lacking contrast.

I don't want to sound rude, it is just an honest opinion for a shot I could also take. I agree that m43 has great DR but this image doesn't show it that much :-)

I'll have to give it a shot with the in-camera HDR. I've tried handheld exposure bracketing for HDR from the D750 and processing in LR and the results weren't that great. But when I did HDR with a tripod it was excellent.

It does look a little "plasticy" but other than that what's not pretty? I think it has somewhat of a painting-like quality to it.

Probably could have put more contrast in the highlights or underexposed a little more. I was shocked at the amount of shadows and highlights that was still there.

No worries - I enjoy the feedback. It's an interesting shot - pretty much pitch black in the tunnel and no light other than what comes in and what you bring. Then you have a sunny 3pm day on the other end. Pretty much the worst of all worlds shot.

Unfortunately that's not a good example of great dynamic range - the highlights are grey and without detail. My experience of DXO (some time ago) was that highlight recovery was inferior to ACR. That's why I didn't buy it.

I've done a lot of three exposure brackets, two stops apart, handheld using continuous high shutter release on DSLRs and they always work fine with Photoshop or Lightroom merge. Try again, maybe you will have better luck.

it all depends on what you are comparing it to. it can be great and it can be horrible, all relative. I do own a OMD EM10 II and some other camera from different manufactures, in my opinion shadow recovery is exactly where the OMD lacks. and I think you shot actually demonstrated it very well.

I shoot raw and do hand-held exposure bracketing all the time. Most HDR programs do a great job fixing the alignment. I use Photomatix and SNS-HDR and there are no issues even with large-ish movements between the frames.

DxO works great, but I think you took the highlight recovery just a tad too far.

That is plenty of DR. Thanks for sharing! Some of the responses you received only reinforce the perception that this a gear site not one built for sharing artistic expression.

Yup, my thoughts precisely. It's up to OP whether this is how the image should look or not, he's only displaying how far a file can be pushed, don't remember seeing him ask for C&C from the 'experts'

Cagey,

The OP did say that he thought his own picture was "great", and others disagreed, giving reasons. Do you think the OP's intention in posting his photo was to not get opinions on it?

Please explain that snide remark you made and your reference to "experts".
