Morning,

My main job is Estate Agency photography currently using my Canon 6D with a 600ex-rt flash. My 6D has 90k clicks now and I'm about to retire it to back up status. My hobby is landscape photography and I am seriously looking at getting the new A7Rii with an adaptor for my glass to use as my main body. I shoot about 10 weddings a year and a little bit in the studio for portraits. Can I shoot manual flash on the Sony with my canon flash? What TTL options are there available for the new Sony?

Thanks in advance

Canon 1DS Mk2 (needs new shutter)
Canon 6D
Canon 17-40L f4
Canon 50mm f2.5 macro lens
Tamron 28-300mm f3.5-6.3
Sigma 24-70 f2.8
Canon 70-200L f4

Can I shoot manual flash on the Sony with my canon flash?
Yes. The center connector is all you need for that.

Pretty much any Sony shoe-mount flash, or recent Sony-compatible flashes from Metz or Nissin. Sigma makes some, but they're the bottom of the barrel choice.

Flashes with the older Minolta/Sony 'Auto-lock' shoe will also require the Sony ADP-MAA adapter.

Thank you sybersitizen, just what I needed to know.

Two easy choices (as in TTL, 100% compat and Pro level) are the Sony F60M and the smaller F43M , both cost a lot more than the relevant canon flashes but are likely to last the distance the same ..

I`m wondering which to get also as my 1DS3 (wedding, theatre Promo cam) is getting long in the tooth, nearly worn out and I`d rather get an A7R2 than a 5DS and want to finally end the 1D series concrete block DSLR thing (been shooting 1DS series for this job for 12 years) ..

the 60M is a BIG flash, looks bigger than a 580-II , the 43M I`m fearing will be underpowered . I have an orig A7 as a "toe-dipper" running alongside until I can work out the best options (also if the AF on the R2 is up to it) with the 24-70 (gets bad reviews on tests but it`s a very good work lens as its 100% consistent like the also mediocre 24-70L Mk1) .

So folks 43M or 60M - is the 60M too unwieldy on these A7 bodies ?

imho, the f60m is a bit too big to hang off of the a7 cameras, i use it hardwired on a l-bracket, which of course also gives the light a much better angle than when it's mounted on the camera.

f60m has manually selectable power levels with p-ttl/hss capability, but i think that it loses some level of capability when the flash is pointed straight up, people have said something to the effect that you have to turn it on it's side, then rotate up?

f60m is a flamethrower, but it has a bad rep for overheating when pushed hard, so check that out.

brian smith has been working through some alternatives: http://briansmith.com/nissin-air-1-commander-sony-multi-interface-shoe/

I went from a 1DS2 to the 6D which was a lot lighter and I soon got using it when shooting portrait as the 1DS has dual controls
There wasn`t such thing as a 6D or even the 5D-II when I go the 1DS3 and the 5D2 hadn`t the AF system or sealing when it landed .. my glass is getting old too so time to move on .

42Mp affords a lot of cropping from the FE 24-70 F4 which is tack sharp at portrait distances at 70mm even at F4 (if not at infinity ) so no need to change lenses, no need for a 70-200 most of the time unless you need 300 or 400mm from a heavy crop of course ;) .

I`m looking forward to trying an R2, still wondering how the F60M handles on these bodies , could always use the F43M and lift the ISO a stop but ........

I May as well stick with DSLRs as do that, I hate brackets and extension cords with a vengeance (almost as much as tripods) - looks like I`ll have to try an F43M and raise the ISO a notch

I push them hard too .... the 580EX Mk1 used to fry its guts when thrashed, the 580EX Mk2 fixed all that and you can hammer it all day long

Ill check Brians links , thanks

It should be an incredible flash, and it really is pretty solid... until it overheats. Even with the latest firmware revision by Sony it doesn't completely solve the problem, but will extend the timeline before it overheats again.

The slightly less powered F43 is a much more reliable choice for native MI shoe flashgun.

Likely the best bet will be the new Nissin DI700A which drops in Sept at BH.

The Nissin DI700A comes in native MI shoe, will do TTL as a control flash, but also features their new Air commander for RF triggering of the flash without having to have one mounted on the camera body. The RF Air controller will support TTL too. Unclear if it will communicate with other Sony flashes in TTL, so for a flash array you will need to buy other Nissin flashes. The bonus is that the Nissin's don't have the same ultra-sensitive overload protection as the Sony F60M.

Thanks alpha, will have a look at that when it hits the UK

I have a bunch of Yongnuo flashes plus their receivers. I hope they work, otherwise I'll sell them on ebay.
