Fianl updates to E-M5 preview

Yes please, can you clarify things concerning the sensor ?

The specifications are incomplete, can you tell the maximum number of pixels we can get for each format, rather than only for 4:3 ratio. This is to clear up things concerning the assertion of Kirk Tuck at visual science lab, who seems to imply that the OM-D has a multi aspect sensor like the GH2 ?
Since the GH2's sensor is over 18 megapixels and this one is 16, it's a pretty safe assumption this is NOT the same sensor as the GH2.
That is what I thought untill I read the Kirk Tuck report. The number of pixels quoted by DPreview is also exactly the same as what they quote for the 4:3 ratio on the GH2 and both the GH2 and the OM-D have very fast read outs of the sensor. It may be a coincidence and may be the Olympus folk interviewed by Kirk Tuck misunderstood the question, whatever this is now circulating on the web and quoting the pixels sizes of the different format ratio would help clarify that definitively. Hence my suggestion.

I completely understand. I've just set them up side-by-side and shot them. The GH2's sensor is clearly larger and isn't 4:3 aspect ratio. The E-M5's, buy comparison, is bang-on 4:3.

I'll try to get a cleaner shot and post in a minute, but I'm now confident in saying it definitely isn't the GH2 sensor.

Thank you, this is much appreciated !

How different is the shutter to the Pen 3s?

Clarify video mode settings

Look for bugs with the new ibis

How good is new ibis shooting video

Pros/cons of different evf refresh rates (if I have that right?)

Differences in SCP to pen 3s

Ok, maybe this is for the review...
Almost all of those are review questions, I'm afraid. SCP is essentially the same but with the bottom right position telling you what you've set the Fn buttons to (though you can't change them from the SCP on this camera). You can select an option from the SCP with the touch screen but not change it.

Does the SD card go in on the side or also in the batt compartment.

A general comparison of the 'old' VF-2 and as it is implemented in the EM-5.

One specific question -

Is the brightness and colour temperature of the EVF adjustable? (on the xz-1 it is not, but I believe on some of the Pens it is.)

Thanks
Yes, both are adjustable.

Does it operate in Manual mode?
No

I am betting you just have not seen/found the menu option for turning auto ISO on while in manual exposure mode. The E-P3 has that option and I would be shocked if the E-M5 did not have it. Default is for auto ISO to be off in manual exposure mode, but in the cogs "E" menu there is an AUTO ISO option to have auto ISO work in all exposure modes, including manual.

Hello there,

The Tone Control feature has been improved since my PL3, as you describe it.

How effective do you judge it to be? Can you clearly see the effect on screen.

Second question: how readable is the lettering of the menus? In the PL3 I can't almost read the different items without spectacles. The characters are too small.

Do they have the same size in the OM-D?

Thank you.

Am.

Actually I had found (and engaged) that option. However, I thought the camera was already in AutoISO, I switched to M and ISO was fixed.

I just checked again and indeed I can select Auto ISO. I stand corrected.

Max shutter speed? Heard anything different - there is some concern re min iso 200 and 4k max shutter

Mag alloy cast body - or plates like the D7000?

Is there a removable tripod mount for the FT adapter?

Thanks - enjoyed the review.

I'd jumped over all the correct hurdles, then forgotten to turn Auto ISO on when I tested earlier.

I was wrong, Auto ISO is available in M mode.

You only handle, what, 50-60 cameras a month? You should be able to have it all figured out by day 2 ;).

First, thank you for your great work.

My question: Is there some control over the sound level or is purely automatic (as I believe it was with the E-P3)?

Thanks, Rainer

I'd like to see a picture of the bottom of the camera. ideally how the battery compartment door opens/closes/type of latch to obtain weather sealing.
It's the same design as the E-5, only smaller. I'll see if there's an image.
Either the picture from Olympus is missing a part, or it is a somewhat different design than the E-5. On the E-5, and other cameras that have a battery grip, you take off the battery door and attach the battery door to the grip. The grip then has a piece that sticks up that takes the place of the battery, and has contacts on the top.

In the picture on the preview:

There is no part sticking up that would fit into the battery compartment. It looks like there are two areas to attach the battery door, but the contacts are in the grip itself, and don't fit into the camera. I would guess that there is an area under the camera that matches to the gold contacts. I wonder about having to take off the battery door. I would think a better solution might be to keep the first battery in the camera, and put the second battery in the grip.

It might be a trick of perspective, but it looks like you can use the side grip without the battery grip, but if you want to use the battery grip, you must also use the side grip. Is this correct? I imagine if you don't have the grip, it might be hard to answer the question.
