FCAS application

Besides Jarrell, are there any other multiple members?
Jarrel's first membership (Coolpix) was honorary. His dslr membership was the real deal.
As for the image, it would be tough to find fault with.
Not if you look closely. Phil spotted the defect. But thanks for the kind words :-).

...the DSLR division of FCAS currently only has two members: Jarrell and me.

And now UF goes and submits this.

Sigh. There goes the neighbourhood.

Curses. I've just been demoted from second-in-command to "other ranks".

I'm pleased to see you are submitting a pic for consideration in the dslr division of FCAS, Uncle Frank. Please give me some time to review other members' comments and I'll reply with the Committee's decision shortly.

Uncle Frank, you have a beautiful specimen here (compliments to Aunt Nancy), and you've positioned it within the frame in a manner that shows it off to its best advantage. The stem acts effectively as a line that draws the eye to the focal point of your composition.

While the Committee agrees that this is a good submission, it is not unanimous in its opinion that this would qualify as a wall hanger.

In addition to the not-quite-saturated area Phil spotted, the Committee respectfully points out the following observations:

-there is a little imperfection at the base of the stem, just to the right, that intersects the frame bevel on the lower edge.

-it appears there may have been some clone work on the stem where the flower shaft intersects with the leaf stem and the plant stem. Without the original pic to compare, one cannot discern for certain what is amiss here, but there appear to be some "dead-ending" of components.

-while the very center of the flower is tack sharp, the pink petals seem a bit soft around the edges, and the rightmost edge of the pink petal (at about 2'oclock) shows a bit of a halo, perhaps the result of post processing the background. This area might be addressed by doing some additional work to adjust the edge colors using the clone tool in darken/lighten mode.

Thus, while the Committee feels this is a very good effort, we believe that the powerful combination of your talents as a photographer and a master of Photoshop technique, along with the sophisticated features of your camera, will likely be even better showcased in your next submission. The Committee eagerly awaits.

You give great critique, Dawn... unrelentlingly honest -lol.

Despite the flaws you pointed out, I think the biggest failure of this submission was its lack of wow-factor. I'll make sure to pick my next subject with care.

Thanks for taking the time to look this over (sob).

Thanks, Uncle Frank. I hope it comes off in most cases as balanced. I certainly don't want to alienate any post-mates. ;-)

I agree. It is a beautiful flower, but the composition didn't quite produce that "hushed silence" that I hear when I first view those that have wow-factor.
Thanks for taking the time to look this over (sob).
Thank you for asking me to represent the Committee. It's heart-breaking, at first, to be turned down (as many of us know!), but you'll seek your next subject with renewed determination and take your skills to the next level. For many of us, that's just a small step. You'll probably need a ladder. ;-)

Dawn:

I think you have done an excellent job of putting the committee's views forward. As Uncle Frank knows the bar is getting higher and higher ( he has done much to bring the FCAS group to that level and now he has to meet that level. LOL ) You have a very sharp eye when it comes to giving an opinion to those applying and that make the committee even more credible.

Thanks for volunteering to assist the committee.

My pleasure, Steve. Thanks. I think I may have been more nervous delivering that news than I was submitting my first pic to the Committee! ;-)

I think you have captured the essence of the Committee's critique
style.
Thanks, John. UF has established a long-standing tradition of fair and honest critiques. Glad to have played a part.
I fear, however, that now that UF knows what rejection feels like,
he may ease up on new applicants. :)
No, I don't think so. UF knows the value of encouraging others to stretch their skills.

Uncle Frank,

As my very first opportunity as an official FCAS member to critique on an application I feel honored that it be you....

I am in awe as always, of your beautiful and well chosen subject. I like everything about it.

I was sorry to see that you didn't make first cut as I was sure you would. I am guessing that it is partially due to your personally setting your own bar a slight higher than the norm.... As you know, I also know just that experience.

You had made reference on my first submission and my use of the USM. I wondered if USM would have made a difference for you for this image.

As always, beautiful! Thank you for sharing your talent and passion.
