ERR Message on D90.....

Tonight, for the first time since I bought the D90 4 months ago, I encountered the "Err" message, right after a "Cha" message showed up on the panel. After removing and re-inserting the battery into the MB-D80 grip, the problem went away. At the time the problem occurred, I had a Sandisk 8Gb card in the slot, which I have not had any problem since day one.

I encountered the F99 problem two weeks ago, which I "correct" the problem with a remove-and-reinsert-battery approach. I did not see it as a big deal back then.

I have a GP-1 unit which I got about a month ago. It has been working great until last week when it just did not respond at all. I tested the GP-1 unit on my friend's D300 and it worked so it proves that the unit is fine. I tested the GP-1 unit with a cable I borrowed from my friend and it still did not work. So I am 99.9% sure that there is something wrong with the GPS slot on the camera.

I am both frustrating and disappointing and am waiting for my supplier to give me options. I dreaded the idea of sending the camera to Nikon for repair as I do not know how long it takes to get it back 8

I had my D90, 16-85VR and MB-D80 away for 1½ week at Nikon Service. Here is what they did: new CPU contact, firmware update, general check on lens and MB-D80. Besides the problem with F - - , F90, there was something weird using LR6 batteries, camera indicated battery exhausted, though they where new. I had to reinserted the battery pack a couple of times to get a full battery indication and shutter release enable.

So far the problems seems to be fixed and haven't occurred again but I will keep an extra eye on everything. I still like the camera and hope this was the end of problems.

Interesting Nikon performed a firmware update....I wonder when this will be released to the public? My expectation would be asap to minimize the negative impact of all the ERR messages.

I got another Err+Cha message last night. And I was using a Toshiba card. So I am not sure the issue is card related.

I generally try to use Sandisk Extreme III 4 gb 30ms cards - my thought is usually I will throw the pics on the External Hard Drive and then the size is small enough to fit onto a DVD for backup.. I do have some of the 8GB but I prefer the 4

Sent my D90 to Nikon's Melville New York repair facility and it was returned yesterday. Here is what the notes on the invoice repair papers stated:
REP. MEMORY COMPRES BOARD
CKD TTL FLASH
CKD BAYONET MOUNT

GENERAL CHECK & CLEAN
CKD MIRROR ANGLE
CLN LOW PASS FILTER

No charge since it was still on warenty

I won't know if the memory card error's continue until I've used it awhile, since it was a random occurence.

Well, my D90 has started giving me the 'no memory card' errors again. Guess Nikon didn't fix it afterall. I emailed them with the news. Let you know what Nikon says when they get back to me.

Sandisk 2GB and 4GB Extreme III cards. Lexar 133X 2GB card.

The one presently in my camera is the 4GB card and my 'no memory card error' happened with that one this time.

Linda - This has to be pretty frustrating. I got my D90 last week and I only have Lexar 1Gb cards. No errors yet.

John,

I use the same Sandisk and the Lexar cards with my D40 and a variety of compact cameras with no problems. But any of my SDHC cards I put in the D90 eventually comes up with memory card errors.

Yes it is frustrating to have my D90 checked out at the Nikon repair facility and come back without being repaired. That means it will probably be going back real soon. The shipping charges to send it out the first time were around $25.00 with insurance.
I would have expected better from a $1000.00 Nikon camera.

I own a D90 and so far no problems. However I have read multiple problems about this. So, I asked tom hogan about it. He says this:

An ERR message occurs from the camera when something in the shutter-write chain reports incorrectly to the camera’s computer. More often than not, it is a shutter problem.

I got my D90 from B&H NYC first week of Jan.2009 . Back in december 08 they wer eout of stock and I got the next shipment. Camera was good for about 400 pics then error messages like crazy and camera freezes too. Am totally disgusted... Nikon said they have no problem, try a new card, remove battery, reset !!!! Is that what I paid money for???? Lemon ! John

HOOAH!

This is insane! I have to twist the lens on my new camera to keep it working. Would prefer twisting nikon for the $1000 I paid for this error machine. Not fair ti the consumer. John

OK,

Iìm very interested on this camera but.. if you were me you'd buy the D90? Yes it's a great camera, with a lot of IQ but what about these problems? How many people have these issues with it?
I don't know what to do: I like it but I don't know if it's worth to buy..
Please help =)

Talked to the service dept in Mellville. They are sending me a shipping label to send my D90 in again to re-evaluate the memory card errors. At least I won't have to pay shipping again.

THere are more people than not that have this camera with no issues; but the high amount of owners with this problem is a concern. THe camera itself (while working) is great. Most people love it!!! Perhaps you could address this issue from the store that you are buying it from; ask how their return policy is, maybe they will send it in to Nikon should it happen if you buy it from them. I saved a few hundred dollars buying it onlive vs. the local camera store. Now, I wish I had spent the extra few hundred as the local store has an excellant return policy and I would have peace of mind. I would also ask what generation the camera is. I've heard this could be an issue with the first generation cameras built.
