ERR Message on D90.....

FYI,

I posted this on another thread and thought it might be useful if not interesting....

"I have had the error on the SanDisk 20MB/sec. cards (4 & 8GB) but have not had any issues with the 30MB/sec nor have I had any issues with a cheap 8GB PNY card.

I did go to a Nikon clinic/seminar and was amused that the Nikon rep instructed us to reformat the card EVERY time we transfered pictures to the computer AND not to keep a lot of pictures on the card- transfer as often as possible and ALWAYS reformat the card after doing a transfer.

I have not followed his instruction yet just to see how this PNY card would hold up, but I have to think that there must be some sort of issue in which the way the D90 writes to the memory card. I hope it is software/firmware related and not hardware. Most of the time they can fix software issues with a firmware update.

I love my D90 yet I confess I will be learning how to use it for some time. I am a die-hard Sony F828 fan and still love that camera, but I can tell that after putting in time and practice, the D90 will blow it away with image quality."

My wife's D90 has started doing the same thing with ERR message as everyone above has mentioned. We have tried several different card all of which work for a while and then produce the same error. All the cards are high end cards ie Lexar Pro 8 gig 133X or Sandisk. I wound up having to pull the batteries out in order for the error to go away. Re-seating the lens helped for a while and then the problem returned. I shoot with the D3 and D2x and have a number of nikon lenses which my wife and I share so have tried several different lenses to try all of which have produced the same error.

Contacting Nikon get the same response as others have mentioned where they have never heard of the problem before. I have had many Nikon cameras over the years and this is their standard line with any problem that emerges. One great example was the banding issue with the D200 and the focusing issue with the D2H all eventually resulted in Nikon acknowledging there was a problem but only after many months of complaining. Threads like this certainly help force Nikon into acknowledging that there may be a problem. In the mean time we are stuck contending with this.

The big problem is that it is an intermittent problem which is very difficult to solve since usually when you take the camera in the tech is not able to reproduce it. It always seems to rear its ugly head when you most need the camera to operate. I'm sure Nikon will eventually figure out what the problem is and will provide a fix. Even though it is frustrating that they don't seem to want to acknowledge the problem they do eventually find a solution which is much better then alot of other camera manufacturers out there

I guess you can add me to the list of those who got the ERR message on the upper part of the top LCD panel with CHA simultaneously showing on the bottom part of the LCD.

The D90 has only had a Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 without any lens changes in 3-4 months and a SanDisk Extreme III 8GB card 20MB/sec (not 30MB/s).

I knew something was odd when I heard the beginning sound of the shutter opening, but didn't hear it close. The shutter speed was relatively slow since there was not much available light.

I've had mine for about 3 months, no problems. I have the Sandisk Extreme III 30mb/s 8GB. BUT, I reformat in camera frequently, and I reset the camera frequently. I do this as a matter of routine to reset any settings I may have messed with on a prior shoot and forgotten to set back to my normal settings.

Bought a brand new D90 camera one week ago. After I downloaded pictures using the Nikon software I also got a CHR error message. Called Nikon this morning and they acknowledged that there is, like the D70, a problem with the memory card reader. I will return the camera today and get it replaced by a new D90.

I hope you have better success than I did. I bought a new D90 in November and experienced the now notorious ERR CHA problem. I returned the camera and got a second new D90 body. After shooting several hundred images, the second D90 began the ERR problem. All to say, I had TWO problematic D90's purchased from a reputable retailer. Also, I tried multiple types of cards and troubleshooted with Nikon Customer Service all to no avail.

Best wishes!!

I realize that this was mostly discussed a long time ago, but no one seemed to search for any pattern (if one exists).

I have had my camera for three months. The problem has now shown up twice (ERR and CHA) in the last month. Both of those times I had pulled the camera out of my backpack to shoot a night scene. Anyone else find this pattern?

Removing the battery and replacing always fixed it (so it doesn't seem like a lens issue). And of course I've pulled it out of my backpack in the dark many times and it was fine.

I noticed one of the times that my camera was ON in my backpack. This made me suspicious that it might have accidentally triggered with the cap on. Reinforcing this idea, I forced the error once by covering the lens and shooting on automatic a few times. Subsequent tries failed (well - failed to make it fail).

Anyway, I was hoping if more of us could remember what we were doing when it happened, we might find a pattern.
