Epson R200 ... it exists... doesn't it?

Hi all!

I recently bought an Epson R200 printer. So I know it exists (and so far I'm finding it a fine replacement for my now defunct Epson Photo 700).

When I first went shopping for a new printer I went to Epson's (US) website, where I found out about the R200. It was listed with all their inkjet photo printers.

Then, I went back, and it was gone.

Not too many places here in the US seem to carry it, at least from my web searches.

From what I've seen in this forum it's actually a NEW model... since it disappeared from the Epson website and I couldn't find many online, I thought maybe it was discontinued.

Anyone know the details of the sordid past of the Epson Photo R200? The link someone posted to the UK website for Epson shows that it's there. Is it just a new product that they're only JUST shipping?

I'm SO confused! But it doesn't take much to do that! ;-)

Well, I bought my R200 at CompUSA for $99.97. So I KNOW it exists. But Epson says it doesn't. In the US.

Can someone clear this up for me?

Thanks!

They are probably not pushing it because it is in very short supply as it is very new.

PS its incredible value for the money!

Regarding the Epson R-200, I ordered 1 at the Gateway website http://www.gateway.com/ last week for $99.95. Tracking shows I can expect UPS delivery on Monday.
Use code NOSHIPA for free shipping

A few local computer stores have started listing it, but don't have stock yet. Price is about $140CAN. It looks like an incredible value to me, and I could care less about a card reader or LCD screen (which is what you gain by getting the R300).

I suspect that Epson is delaying delivery in the hope that their older models will sell out (C64/C84?) as the R200 is in the same price range and is obviously a much better printer.

According to my supplier, the ETA date for the R200 in Canada is Mar. 26.

In addition to the built-in card reader, there are other differences between R300 and R200:
  • USB 2.0
  • PictBridge

I never print directly from camera or flash card, so I'm not very interested in paying extra for features I'll never use. USB 2 might make a slight difference sometimes, but I've never found the transfer rate to be a limiting issue when it comes to USB printers.

I just purchased one today at Staples for 99.98. Its a great deal considering that it comes with all 6 ink cartridges. And print quality is pretty good.

I picked one up last night at Staples also. Was a little disappointed in the units quality, power, and paper feed buttons felt cheap and flimsy, as was the lack of a USB 2.0 port. But all disappointment went away as soon as I printed my first CD and photo. Quality is awesome, amazing for a printer that costs less than $100.00. Real razor / razor blade theory here, as a set of ink cartridges is 3/4 the cost of the printer....might as well throw the printer out and buy a new one, pay for the ink, get the printer free...

According to the specifications for the R200 (at Gateway) USB 2.0
connectivity to the PC is provided
My information is based on the specification from Epson UK:

For R200 Interface: "2 USB1.1 (one placed on the front) for PC and Mac connections and for printing direct from compatible EPSON digital cameras"
http://www.epson.co.uk/product/printers/photo/styphotor200/spec.htm

For R300 Interface: "USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed) Type-B Interface for PC and Mac connection, USB 1.1 Type-A for external CD-R and Zip®drives, PictBridge, USB DIRECT-PRINT and Bluetooth® connections"
http://www.epson.co.uk/product/printers/photo/styphotor300/spec.htm

The USB 2.0 port is not only for printing, but can also be used to transfer the contents of memory cards to CD-Rs and ZIP drives.

Whether this feature is useful depends on each person's needs.
I never print directly from camera or flash card, so I'm not very
interested in paying extra for features I'll never use. USB 2
might make a slight difference sometimes, but I've never found the
transfer rate to be a limiting issue when it comes to USB printers.

Well, clearly, it does exist! ;-)

I have to say, the print quality is great, and the borderless prints really do look like they came from a photofinishers (and with the newest drivers on the Epson web site, this works on Mac OS X! Yay!)

I have to echo the one comment that the power and other switches on the top of the unit seem kind of flimsy, but otherwise I'm REALLY happy with the printer!

The R200 has been relisted on the US Epson website.

Mine is still backordered, though (ETA March 26 in Canada).

They are JUNK for printing CDs. I am on my third one and it is the most frustrating thing in the world. They are so tempermental. You load the CD so perfectly and then the heads go up and down and back and forth forever, it pulls the CD in and out and in and out and then says you have a paper jam. Takes 2-3 minutes. you then follow all the instructions and try it again-5 minutes later you get the same response. I have printed over 200 CDs with these things and they are VERY time consuming. They seem to work best when brand new. I have not printed a CD in several months and now need to do some for a client and have given up-again. I do not have hours to play with these poorly designed pos to get 3 CDs printed.
Good Luck-you will need that and more patience than I have

I have had one for about a year, (called a R210 over here) fittedit with a JLW cif ink system ,works really well, can be a bit fussy about CDs,Great value for money .
Do a search using "R210" may give you more info.

Just make sure the clear plastic leading edge of the CD tray is not kinked,Have got mine printing reliably, after lots of fiddling.I agree, they could have done a better job with the CD tray\loading etc.

Saw them stacked up in Sam's Club a couple of days ago for $79.00+
I've purchased two from there in the past couple of months.
