I use the EOS Utility 3 to transfer my images from the EOS R to my iMac (High Sierra) using a USB-cable.

I did a clean install of macOS Catalina on my MacBook Pro (mid 2014) and installed the most recent version of EOS Utility 3. When I connect my EOS R with a USB-cable to my MacBook Pro the EOS Utility starts up but does not make a connection with the EOS R.

The download link on the Canon website does not yet show macOS Catalina as OS so I used the most recent OS shown in the list (macOS Mojave).

Anyone experiencing the same problem?

How are you connecting the camera which is USB C to your UB3 2014 MacBook Pro? Or does your Mac have a USB C connection.

Always the same: each macOS Apple upgrade, The Utility sucs.

stay away for several months from macOS Catalina, if you need to work

If you don't NEED to upgrade to Mac OS 10.15, don't.

Personally, right now, I can't see any up-side.

My MacBook Pro does not have a USB-C port. I use its USB-3 port. I have a cable with USB-C at one end and USB-A at the other end. This worked always flawlessly on my iMac with High Sierra for transferring images. I now use a USB-A SD-card reader which works fine.

I think Canon's software is not yet ready for macOS Catalina. I encountered the same bug in DPP as reported earlier in this forum concerning raw conversion. The option "Convert and Save" does not work. A way out is using batch processing.

Yes!! Ive experiencing the same issue thinking keep my Mac Book pro "up to date" releasing most of my $$$ making apps don't work with Catalina devastating lesson

Canon 5D II DPP4 NOT compatible

EOS utility , tethered photography NOT compatible

My invoicing account software NOT compatible

So beware when thinking downloading Catalina, hope one day this issue can be resolved sooner then later

To Users of EOS Utility 3.11.1 for Mac OS X and Picture Style File Registration Tool 1.0.0 for Mac OS X

macOS 10.15.2 was released by Apple on December 11, 2019. Following operation checks performed with this version at Canon, we have confirmed a USB connection issue with “EOS Utility 3.11.1 for Mac OS X” and "Picture Style File Registration Tool 1.0.0 for Mac OS X" whereby the functions enabled by connecting a camera and a Mac device via USB cannot be used.

This issue does not occur on macOS 10.15.0/10.15.1. We are currently preparing to release versions of these applications that incorporate a fix for this issue.

For EOS cameras with Wi-Fi functionality, the camera can be remotely operated from EOS Utility via a Wi-Fi connection with the Mac computer.

For more details, please refer to the respective camera's user manual.

We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience on this matter.

Actually Canon's site detects Catalina, nonetheless after downloading the latest version of EOS Utility (3.11.1) I have the same problem as you with an error message from EOS Utility (Warning failed to communicated with the camera). Oddly enough the camera's LCD shows a laptop icon which indicates that is connected.

EOS 5D Mk IV
MacBook Pro 16 inches (2019).

Note: There is no problem when connecting the camera to to an iMac running Mojave.

I have exactly the same problem. It worked fine until the upgrade to Mac OS-X 10.15 Catalina. I have downloaded the latest EOS Utility 3 dated October 2019 but still no luck.

That's correct, yesterday I worked fine with Canon Utility on Catalina 10.15.1. This morning I updated to 10.15.2 and no connection anymore

Hi I have the same problem on my Mac. Camera is Eos M6. Eos utility starts up but failed to make connection with the camera. I don't find a solution yet.

I want to add that the problem appeared after upgrade to os catalina 10.15.2

On the previous version it worked.

Unbelievable what a mess catalina is

Thank you to all who chimed in. I've been trying to get EOS Utility to work for the past few hours. In my quest, I came across this page that says it works. Of course, we now know that 10.15.2 broke it.

I actually don't use EOS Utility. I was trying to use it just to answer some curiosity I had.

I have a SD card reader which is USB-3 and my laptop has an SSD with USB-C. I downloaded image from the SD card to the laptop and checked the speed. It was going about 90 MB/s with occasional brief drops down to 60 MB/s.

I wanted to see how fast the transfer would be using the camera's hardware since it is newer than my card reader and is native USB-C.

Has anyone checked? I'm still curious to know how fast a camera to laptop transfer goes.

Even i am facing the problem from last 2 days.Even canon India is not aware of this problem. i had a word with their engineer on this. I am using my mac book pro for tethering.plz help on this.

Hey there, I upgraded do 15.3.1 Beta and Eos Utility works ! Lightroom works too. Testet with EOS R.

I have the same problem on 3 Macs: When I installed Catalina a few weeks ago on my iMac 27 (2017), EOS Utilities 2 and 3 did not connect with my EOS Cameras (6d, 5dii). I reistalled the Utilities and loaded the newest firmware on both cameras – did not work. The same happened on a new MacBook Pro 2019, which was already configured for Catalina (newest version of the EOS utilities installed)

On an old MacBook Pro (2013), I was first surprised the the cameras conected to the laptop even after I installed Catalina. However, as there were too many "leftovers" in the libraries from the many years use, I decided to backup all documents, music, movies, photos etc. , strip the library – as time machine used 24 hours for a 120 GB backup! – and completely wipe the250 GB SSD, reinstall Catalina and all necessary drivers and programs. Now – without any docs, media etc – EOS Utilities 2&3 did not connect my cameras to this MacBook anymore.

At least there is an uncomfortable, more time-consuming way to download Photos from the SD-Cards to the iMac or the old MacBook (the new one has no card slot).

I would needed CompactFlash CF Card Reader to download photos from the EOS 5dii to the Macs. I have two of these, none of them works. How do I get my EOS 5dii images to a computer?

Its not the only caveat after the Apple OS X change to Catalina, which confused and dissappointed many Apple users.
Too many "nice" gadgets, 64 bit only, however, many good programs (...including the Apple iWork suite) are now close to useless, do not work anymore – or you are forced into costly cloud programs!

I noticed that issue after the most recent update to 10.15.2 while I was on 10.15.1 I was fine. It’s more so an issue where canon has to update its software and fixed the bugs.

Same problem, my Canon 5DS R won't connect as it did before to my Macbook Pro using Catalina.

However I have Windows on my Macbook as well and in Explorer it can see both cards in the camera and I have downloaded photos to my usual external drive this way but it is a bit of a pain.
