Interesting jpeg file sizes -

e30 4.5 mp
e5 3.55 mp (lower noise or lower jpeg setting?)
5dmkii 14.6 mp

Lenses
14-35 at 25mm for Olympus
50mm f1.2 L for Canon

Lots of variables so not really for conclusions, just for fun and my own edification.

Note - 5dmkii pic was too large for dpreview so I scaled horizontal resolution to 4096 to get it to fit.

Interesting interpretations for color, exposure. E30 colors were a bit muted compared to the real quilt, e5 was closest, 5d was too bright and colors are off (reds rendered with an orangish cast, etc).

so, not much really to compare here because any differences can be controlled in PP or in workflow. And for detail comparisons, jpegs out of camera will not show the true ability of the 3 platforms. I'll pop another post in a few minutes of the same 3 shots with proper WB applied to raw, exposure balanced (pull the Canon down) and developed for maximum resolution.) I'll post the central area.

For people that prefer out of the camera Jpegs this may be a useful peek.

Did you set the E-5 to shoot Large Super Fine? For some odd reason that's not the default, at least on the E-3 it wasn't.

I'm working on raw conversions for 100 percent pixel peeping crops of the center portion. Just put viewer 2 on my computer. I'll do that as separate post.

and no - I did not find where in the menu to up the JPEG setting. That's probably why it's smaller than the e30 sample. I looked, but in my own case, I only use jpegs for initial proofing but do all final ouput that I'm going to use with a raw workflow.

Thanks John...any thoughts on the E5 and 14-35 in "dim" light regarding focus and the "second/third" whir whir to get focus lock?

Congrats on the new camera...hope to see one in a month or so...when I'm in Austin. I doubt I ever see one here unless I get seriously tempted...

From the raws - master 2 for the Olympus cameras - sharpening at 10 percent 1 and 2

and the Canon is from Capture One sharpening at 180 .8 and 1 (no correlation to master 2 settings).

I also did an E30 with Capture One at the same settings as the Canon and it didn't make a change that I could see. So these are pretty representative.

Just as a double check I'll pop on the 50mm f2.0 macro on the E5, but in the past when I've compared the 14-35 is plenty sharp. What we are seeing here is the incremental improvement of the E5 over the E30 (and the real improvements are at higher ISO than here at ISO 200), and just how much easier a time of it a FF lens and sensor have and capturing fine detail.

not sure how low is low light. I figure 1/20 sec iso 1600 f2 is pretty low. Focuses in about 1/2 a sec. Starts to matter what you are pointing at. Low contrast subjects can take a sec but it still locks in.

Like the E30 was, better than my 5dmkii, not as good as my 1dsIII was. Tad better than E30. (which was like the E3)

re did the shot with the 50mm macro and my SHG is just very slightly sharper than that prime

so, the results stand - e5 ultimate resolution better than e30 but both still way under 5dmkII with a good lens hung on both systems.

But, real life like it is, the E5 is like a little 1ds in terms of build and handling. I'll keep using my 5dmkii for tripod shots like night panos and group photos where high detail can really count, and the E5 for most everything else. (gets to be a pain to have to adjust every stinking picture out of that canon). The E5 and 5dmkii has indistinguishable resolution for most output applications.

Indoor shots at ISO 1600 on the E5 are now totally usable and clean. With the f2 zoom vs my f4 zoom on the Canon, the E5 is now the slightly better indoor walkabout available light camera.

So far no surprises. I'm getting what I expected from the early reviews and postings I've seen.

E5 really does squeeze quite a bit more out than the E30

I was looking at these full screen at home and the black dots in the blue are resolving on the e5 and 5dmkii but not really on the E30

(and on the 5dmkii you see the thread patterns themselves of the blue background, but that's what FF is for)

thanks for your effort in doing this john.

im having trouble expanding your first and second series of crops. the canon series will expand but not the oly images. are you able to rectify this? thanks.

also, what's your gut feeling re DR on the highlight end for the e5?; closer to the e30 or the pen series; (from memory i think there's around a third to half a stop difference??).
