i had a look at dpr clone but i found the forum a bit dated. i prefer the cleanness and newer style of dprevived. they need to squash the bugs tho which im sure they will.

The issue I have with the clone site is that it's part of a family of forums from the same origin, which in 2012 decided they had created so many independent forums that they should group them together under one umbrella, camera-info.com only to then launch a new round of brand-specific forums, including l-mount-forum.com in 2018. And now another duplicate set of forums to match the layout of dpreview.com.

I also like the ideas bobn2 has about making dprevived a user managed foundation so that it won't disappear overnight again.

The problem I'm having with both those sites, is I don't think they can offer a threaded 'tree' view of posts (it's always flat), or show which posts (or threads) you've read (or partially read) or not.

Seems like there's needs to be someone who can code this rather than using basic templates which are limited in their basic operation.

Clone looks and works ok, I joined immediately and as it’s run on a longstanding platform is bug free - though it seems quite resistant to change. My feature requests and readability tweaks have met with ‘no one else after this before and we have 1000’s of other members on our sister sites’.

So yes this isn’t a startup it’s just another version of many forums already running :

They all look the same, which is ok, but the problem is there’s already a lot of members there in other brand forums. Confusing. Fragmentary.

Whereas DPRevived has been built for us, from scratch. It’s very very early days with it, there’s bugs and fairly major limitations - currently (no rich text editor!). Bob though is totally transparent about the site as it stands and where he wants to take it - and that is more toward the structure of DPR forum we know - and also very open to our suggestions.

So despite the immediate ok-ness of Clone I’d keep some interest in Revived - as I think it will be more for us in the medium and longer term. So if possible to support Bob and add requests maybe join there as well.

Probably finding or starting a thread in the "Leica & Alternative Gear" forum would be the closest. Historically, it used to be called just "Alternative Gear". Well, at least I could not register yesterday after several attempts. There were system errors.
The main problem is not the place - the main problem is competent programming and bandwidth. As long as the forum or site is small with a small number of registrants, there will be no problem with functioning.

Let's see what happens next.

Resources are easy to overcome, that's not an issue. Getting the features ironed out, and attracting users and good content is a bigger issue. You can have a great option, but if people don't use it or know about it, then it just sits there.

I'm willing to give them three months, even six months to get things up and running. i plan to use one of the clones, whichever is more popular. There's plenty of resources on the internet to spend my time on. I already know which devices I want to buy (a medium format film or digital) and/or the Sigma FF camera, whichever comes first. I have a ton of film scanning also to get to work on.

Having been through a number of forum transitions before the 2 most important things are

a) Wherever the community lands, whomever is in charge is both respected AND has a long history of running forums. It's fun for a few months or even a year or two. It becomes a chore after that - so for that reason landing in a place that has a track record of hosting communities is important.

b) Yeah - that people show up and use it. People always get lost along the way - even die hards will fall off for whatever reason - the dopamine hit isn't the same or whatever. And with DPR - some people may only visit once a month or once every few months, all those people will have a hard time finding the new place. (I mean seriously - less than one month notice? Then again Amazon employees - including DP Review staff have it much worse.)

There's plenty of open source forum packages out there. The debate between this interface or that - threaded or not - is a niggle. Some people will always prefer one over the other. Actually finding a place for the community that lasts will be the big thing.

Yes, tree structured threads are important in a high volume site like DPR where a thread often gets long and breaks up into sub threads. You need the threaded view to be able to easily track the posts you are interested in. Flat views are good for quickly scrolling posts in a linear conversation but become hopelessly confusing when there are parallel conversations happening within the thread with one group of people in discussion with one another while another part of the thread has a different group debating something slightly different.

Neither method is perfect and being able to switch views with a click is important.

I see to remember threaded views being the norm in the beginning - bulletin boards, feed readers, usenet clients and so on. Or am I mis-remembering? Flat view is modern...

Before claiming definitively, that one forum is better than the other, I would wait a couple of weeks. They are both works in progress.

DPreview clone is initially certainly more usable, because it is based on years tested photography forum software. Like noted above - same as camera-info and couple of sister forums. I posted there, yes - Sigma forum thus started earlier than big labels

But I would vote for DP revived - this is really work in progress and most likely to become better and more like current dpreview. I'll post there too, when initial quirks are ironed out and it is possible to add some bigger images and so on.

Even if they step up, and allow people to upload 5 MB jpegs that site won't allow us to upoad full-size sample photos, which is something DPreview has been allowing for many years now. I think what is needed is a colocated server, with a five or six drive level 5 RAID in it, using the new 22 TB hard drives I saw when I went searching for hard drives the other day. Such a server will cost a few thousand dollars, but that's nothing compared to the cost of maintaining the system (probably at least one part-time tech on call, which is likely to cost at least ten grand per year). I said in another post here that to keep DPreview running I think it woukd cost at least $100,000 per year. I wouldn't be surprised if their budget has been a lot more than that, and I don't know if the advertising income could sustain that level of expense . . . especially now, with a declining economy.

You're better off linking to your own hosting or cloud storage anyway.

The problem with that type of thing is the files disappear. Many times I've been to threads with missing sample images, because the person posted that way, and then let their hosting account die. I myself have done that on several sites in the past. I think the bedt way for a forum to work is for people to embed their full-size jpegs in their post. This way the post lives on as long as the site lives. Unfortunately, when the site dies, so does the content . . . just like what's happening here.

What this projuct needs is a relatively wealthy benefactor, who is willing to sink a few grand up front, and is committed to pay for maintaining the system (maybe a grand or two per month) for the forseeable future (or at least the next ten years).
