Hi everybody!

I' been using DPP for a long time, but when I installed it on a computer (win7, 64bit) with a full hd Sharp lcd tv,(1920x1080 pixel resolution) I got an error message when I tried to launch the program:

"This program requires a display capable of 1024x768 resolution or more (screen area), and High Color or higher settings."

Which doesn't make any sense. Some suggested, that it may be a problem with the DPP version, but now I just updated to the latest, and I got the same problem.

It is ridiculous, that I can't use the software on a nice high resolution display because it says the resolution is not enough.
Does anybody have an idea?

Something wrong with your video drivers or settings I guess.

I am also running the latest version of DPP on Win7 64bit on a Lenovo W510 notebook at 1920x1080 with no problems whatsoever.

I don't know. Everything else's working perfectly (Lightroom PS etc) What settings you recommend to check?

1. Right-click on empty desktop area, select "Screen resolution" and see if you have 1920x1080 there.

2. On the same windows click on "Advanced settings" and then choose "Monitor" tab -check if you have "True Color (32bit)" there.

Yepp these are the very basics, I tought I don't have to mention I checked these ones.
Thanks anyway

Seems like DPP is confused about something in your hardware configuration. It must be determining the screen resolution by a now Win7, 64 bit unsupported or defective method. You would need to debug DPP to find out why it has erroneously decided that your configuration is subpar.

-Try changing to a lower resolution.

-You could also try to blindly change video drivers and see if that helps. Isn't there a generic video driver that you can try?

You likely need to file a defect report into Canon (no idea how to do this). The software developers of DPP should be able to find root-cause.

Thanks,

I hoped this was a known problem with a simple solution, ( I changed the resolution, didn't work) I don't know if I should start fiddling with video drivers. May be I go with other softwares.

Buying different software is a good solution although it is a pity if you can't use DPP. It would be potentially useful to others if you could report the issue to Canon. Why not dash off a quick note to Canon and see if they are interested in helping?

I like DPP because;
  • it is free (or you already paid for it in the price of the camera)
  • it always supports the latest cameras
  • it actually works quite well for basic adjustments.
  • although at a glacial speed (non global warming rate), Canon is slowly improving the product such as tilt correction, picture ratings, etc.
Did I mention that it is free? :)
Thanks,

You're right I'm gonna report it to Canon. I like DPP as well because of its simplicity, and it does perfectly what it was designed for. And it's free.

As others have said it sounds like a driver issue to me. I've used DPP on several Win 7 64-bit machines and it's been fine on all of them (though I've seen some editing crashes when Kaspersky AV is enabled, but that's another story!)

If you're wary about getting down and dirty with drivers ypurself, you could always see if a new certified driver is available via Windows Update. Very often these aren't the best performing drivers but they usually work well enough for 2D apps and you'll be able to rollback easily enough.

Have you tried uninstalling Dpp, rebooting and re-installing it?

Thanks Gammyknee, but I'm not comfortable enough to work with videodrivers, maybe I try that sometime later if I find someone who can help me with that.

The video card manufacturer has a website as does the computer manufacturer and even in windows update with latest drivers.

To get it to work right click your desktop icon for dpp then choose properties, then click on the compatibilty tab and put a check in the box that says disable display scaling on high dpi settings . Merry Christmas.

I just re-read your post and you say that you are outputting to a TV. Not sure but is it possible that this is confusing your graphics drivers (outputting to an external display may not always be using standard settings).

Have you tried using a normal monitor?

,!!!!!!!!!! WOW. ,!!!!!!!!!

Thanks mac west, I can not believe, but this works. Now DPP is running perfectly.
Thanks for everybody who tried to help.
Merry Christmas for all of you !

Awesome you got it to work. It still sounds like a defect in DPP as it is supposed to be Win7 compatible without having to fiddle with resizing properties. I'm guessing DPP makes a few bad choices in deciding the screen size. Canon still needs to fix it so that the app runs out of the box.
