I am the proud owner of a D 70 and have been reading the threads regarding the D 200.

I keep on reading that the D 200 is an " Awesome" camera so what makes this camera " Awesome" where I see no evidence to confirm this.

The photos I have seen seem no different to the D 70, and people do say they have had no time to take decent photos.
This seems strange since we have had several days off over Xmas.

I'm not knocking the D 200 but I need a lot of convincing before I even consider a switch to the D 200.

Oy. Why is it everyone wants d200 users to convince them to buy the cam? Isn't that what sales people are for? It's quite possible the D70 is perfect for you. But then, why did you even bother posting?

Anyhoo, take a look at my recent thread about Christmas travels. I think the one pic I indicate as my favorite is at least a good argument for 5fps.

I've had the D200 for over a week.

I've been a pro photographer for over 20 years.

I've shot over 40,000 RAW frames in the past year and a half.

Only in the past 24 hours have I started to learn how to tweak the D200 raw files so that my images are starting to look the way I want them to or the way they should.

Give it a chance for Ch_ st's sake...

This isn't the Canon forum where the camera process's the images for you and they all come out with that same smooth boring same-ness.

Not meant to sound as harsh as it does. Sorry. It's too late and I'm off to bed!

Could you share any information on what kind of settings you have changed and any other tips on using the camera.

Brian,

You're asking that a medium (the internet) that for the most part is using low to medium quality images, compressed an reduced in size, by varying amounts to compare a camera with a good deal of detail, to a camera with even more detail.

It's kind of like looking through a window screen at the wrong side of a pair of binoculars look at two cars.

If you really want to compare the cameras, go to a reputable camera shop in about another 2 weeks and ask to view 2 16x20 or larger photos, one from the D200 and the other from the D70s, taken by a professional.

Who is demanding that you switch to D200?

I'm sorry for being sarcastic but you formulated it in such a way as if it is an absolute requirement that all D70 owners switch to D200 and you're trying to rebel against that :)

If you read everything said here, you will see same people who produced best of D200 so far will also tell you that D200 will NOT produce images strikingly better than D70. They may be better here and there in some situations and if printed REALLY large, but as everyone tells you to wait for longer, yes they are right. But it does not mean after some time you will see something from D200 which D70 OBVIOUSLY COULD NOT TAKE. There will be simply no such thing. Well, may be in some scientific tests but not in real printed images. You can pretty much forget about it.

D200 has many significant advantages over D70 in its specs and may be some subtle advantages in the corner cases of image generation. If that is not enough for you to upgrade then I wouldn't. And that is serious, I'm not joking and not being sarcastic.

The thing that makes the D200 "awesome" is not the picture quality!

If someone could explain how you can get better images than you can get out of a D70 with a good lens, I'd like to hear it. The point of the D200 is the features. It's about not missing shots that you might miss with the D70 plus, you get a little more cropping room too. If it has no worse image quality than a D70 I think everyone should be more than happy.

My guess is that the majority of people that end up buying the D200 would have been better off with a D70 anyway and saved themselves a lot of cash.

How many actually need the weather sealing, the mirror lock up, the improved commander mode, the 2fps more, the ability to switch focus modes and metering using a button instead of menus etc etc.

Regards

What a self-serving post!
We're not here to convince you of anything, what made you think we are?

Go see a salesman if you want convincing.

I don't mean to be insulting, but IMHO, this was one arrogant post!

I'm a canon guy right now, and we all don't let the cam mess up the images. Infact many of us use only raw, and work with all raw files. I shoot only raw with my 300D rebel, I got pretty good with PS and would not want to shoot jpegs anymore.

I'm looking at may be changing over to the D200, in my research on it I finding many good things out about it. One of the main selling points for me, is what was siad about not missing shots. Because of the great specs it has, I like the colors on shots I seen. And great sharpness on many of the shots, it's looking really good to me.

This coming from a canon guy, that made fun of nikon owners when nikon releashed the D70s. But you have to admit, that nikon coming out with a 6 MP to replace a 6 MP cam. Seemed pretty funny when others come out with all 8 MP as replacements, even many nikon guys felt let down.

I will shot any cam that works for me, I started out with a E20N then got a 300D. And may move upto a D200, the very first digital cam I got. Was a no name 850,000 kb, that was way over priced but had very good specs at the time. And took some great shots even being less then 1 MP, it come with a big 4 mb CF 1 card. I upgraded to a 16 mb card I beleave, that give me all the room I needed for shots.

Digital cams sure did come a long way from back then, but even back then I knew they was going to be a big thing. Even though not many people had them yet, nor was they at a price where people would buy them like now. The frist real digi cam I got, was my fuji 3800 3.2 MP 6x optical zoom that I still got and use. A great P&S cam for ebay photos, and for my 9 year old to use when we are shooting together.

It was but you could let it go :), you could prove to be smarter by ignoring arrogance of the post and simply replying constructively.

If you need extra evidence, wait on the reviews. It does not sound like you're in a rush anyway.

You will not be seeing ANY DSLR camera, no matter what brand or model, blow the socks off of another.

Until something NEW comes around the corner, we all have the same beasts to a point and there will be no GIANT leap in image quality until we have a GIANT leap in technology.

This leap will not happen anytime soon or we would be hearing about here.

Keep your D70 and save you money for the leap that is years down the road.

But I want 10-500mm f1.4 VR III extra sharp lens, really small with no distortion on either end and beautiful bokeh and no light fall off, which remains tack sharp down to 1/2 second due to VR III.

That is what I want :), let it cost $3000 :).

Or 12-300mm with same specs for $2000 :)

Totally agree. I have seen prints taken with D2x, Eos 1ds mk 2, 350D, D70s and D50 at A4 size and they look no different...

The D200 is a nice camera. Great feel to it, nice set of controls, a lot of extra features than the D70. I have a D70 and I am returning my D200 today only because I feel guilty about the money when my D70 is only 6 months old. Also, I dropped it about 3 months ago and had to spend $300 to fix it.

If I did not have a dSLR, I would definitely buy the D200 now. I just haven't even come close to getting everything out of my D70 yet. If you get to play with it, you will love it for all the features. The image quality was slightly better, but I don't really print any bigger than 8 x 10 so I felt guilty about the money spent when I could spend the money on some other things. Also I only got a few days to play with it so I definitely did not give it its due.

However, once some of the house things are taken care of, I am definitely going to repurchase the D200.

Don't go to your local camera store because once you hold it and look at all the controls and menu features you are going to want it. Focus/exposure is better than the D70 in my humble enthusiast opinion. It also has 4 memory banks for your various settings. That is a great feature.

My guess is:

1) Most posting pictures are the knee jerk crowd that are in a frenzy right now.

2) The folks that will use the D200 for professional work haven't had the chance due to the holidays.

Patience grasshopper…
