>>CTF Challenge #48: A New Point of View<<

Andreas, I don't think it's got anything to do with the brandname on the camera...the STF Challenges seem to have attracted a very creative bunch who inspire each other. I believe their challenges have been going for quite a while now, and the main group are incredibly talented. I have entered their exhibition category a couple of time, and I was so rapt once when I came 9th! With all the fabulous pics there, I felt that was rather an achievement.

The Sony forum seems to have a somewhat different "mindset" to the Canon forums on the whole. Aside from the "Great Debate of the 828" they are very much about "photography" and the pictures produced, rather than the camera and which one has the best features. Anyway, that's how I see it when I browse the Sony forum.

I have absolutely no ideas for this challenge, but then we only just got home from out trip and I've been more focused on sorting and editing the photos I took on the weekend.

Gayle
regards,
Andreas
At the rate my brain is working right now, I'll be lucky to get one
pic in each gallery ;-)
But three is fine by me.

Andreas, congrats on winning the last 2 challenges, very well
deserved! And no, I am not planning on shooting in black and white
from now on.....my world is full colour and that's how I like my
photos. But B&W does look pretty awesome for some shots. Probably
means I'll never win another challenge....but oh well, I can live
with that.

We are still in the Macedon Ranges and ohmigod, it's cold here! But
we're having a great time with our friends and I have taken a LOT
of photos.

Off to check the galleries for inspiration, and I think I;ll check
out the STF ones too. They are always a source of inspiration for
me. If anyone has time to spare (like a few hours) the STF
galleries are surely worth a thorough browse. In my (not so humble)
opinion, they have the very best photographers on dpreview enter
their challenges.

..nice to see you back. Don't be too alarmed by the quality of the challenge. I think portraiture is easier because the subject matter is right there. I am sure many will tell me I am wrong, though.

Have you now got your new PC up and running. I too have not taken too many images of late mainly due to awful grey weather here in England. I have tried getting creative indoors but have not published anything yet, and have also started having some old slides scanned which is really interesting.

Anyway good to see you back.

What is going on here? Did everyone go out and take some
photography lessons without me? If the purpose of the challenges
was to increase the level of abilities here, it has certainly
succeeded! I cannot believe the gorgeous shots in both galleries!
There is such good stuff in there that I'm not even feeling
inspired, I'm feeling defeated and left behind! First of all, I've
hardly been shooting at all in recent weeks b/c I've been so busy
with other stuff, so I'm losing ground, quickly. I've been doing
some reading but not had the chance to put it into practice. I
think I'm going thru withdrawal!

She's a beauty, Athlon 64 bit, 3200+ with a gig of ram, but I'm still waiting for a call back from Asus with the info I need on changing BIOS b/c I need to adjust a printer parameter but can't find it. Until then, I can't print. Until I can print, I have to keep the old computer intact so I can print thru it for my biz. Once the printing is working then I can convert the old machine from FAT to NTFS for security reasons, then hubby can take it to his new office. I've only got a ton of urgent brochures I need to do for him and then I'll finally get back to shooting. I can't believe how depressed I am about not getting shoot time in. Welcome back, Lonnit. I got a new computer, too. It's a Dell 5150 notebook and it just arrived yesterday. I also got my 10D back from Canon Factory Service, but I didn't bring it to work today because I brought the laptop in. That was a big mistake. I didn't use the laptop, but I really could have used the 10D.

It was cold (50 degrees) and rainy most of the day, but the sun peeked out for a little while in the afternoon, creating a rainbow just outside of my office. I shot it with my Powershot S10 and entered it in the eligible gallery:

It reached a high of -7 F today -- too cold to go outside for shooting.

However, I am going to bring some customers to the St Paul Ice Palace tonight.

If I get some good pictures, I'll post them. If my camera freezes, I'll just complain.

Hi Everyone,

Congratulations to the winners in the eligible and exhibition
categories of the last challenge. There were many truly great
images. Good job to all.

For the next challenge, I would like to stay on the theme of
thinking "outside the box". Lately I have been thinking about
cliches in photography, and how many images are repetitions of
common themes, taken from the same old perspectives. I would like
you guys to try to take photos (maybe using those same common
themes) from a new and original perspective or point of view.

In this challenge, try to think about not only how we in our daily
lives view the world around us, but the points of view that
animals, inanimate objects, and poeple in odd situations may have.

As in all of the challenges, try to aim for a combination of
creativity, uniqueness, and technical excellence. I hope that
everyone has a good time and enjoys this next challenge topic.

I'm here! Just been busy organising kids to go back to school (yes there really is a god!) and drowning my daughter in the name of art. After 6 weeks of her being home, it would have been so easy to...........don't worry, she's alive and well, mouthy as ever and had a ball doing underwater portraits. She's sent that pic and a few other more warped ones to everyone she knows!

Great idea. How'd you do it?
First, I too have difficulty reading backward print. You're not alone.

Second, the picture is a composite of two pictures taken at the same time. I've got a glass top coffee table. I put the camera on the floor and shot the picture of my hand with the pen. I shot the second picture of the written word (face down). The table was in natural sunlight, nothing else was done for lighting. Actually I shot about 30 or 40 pictures. The camera had difficulty getting the focus where I wanted it.

I flipped the words image as that is the way the paper would see it, erased all the background from both images, combined them and added the white background.

A few minor tweaks in PS like sharpening, a boarder and Will's suggestion to use the "blur" tool (A First for me, thanks again Will) and there's the finished picture.

So 24 hours later I checked the poem and for YEARS I've remembered it incorrectly. Re write the script, re shoot the script and re-combine. Corrected picture.

And for the record, when a Rocket Scientist wants to say "It's not rocket science." he says "It's not brain surgery."

I was returning a book (photography, of course! LOL!) to the library - about 20 miles away. When I got there, there was a bicycle covered in snow, left locked to the bike rack. I wished I had my camera with me. I was cutting thru the park on the way home and I saw a pair of bare trees that I liked; I wished I had my camera. I got further thru the park and saw steam billowing out of the recycling plant, hovering around it's smokestack. I wished I had my camera. I raced home, ran into my building, grabbed my camera. Hubby just happened to be home. The phone rang - I mouthed "I'm not here!" and ran out! LOL! I raced back. The bike was still there, covered in snow. I shot it. A man walked by and said, " Why are you taking pictures of a bicycle?". Why? WHY??? Why was he NOT?!! Why was it there? Who's was it? Why was it left to get covered in snow? If they rode thier bike to the library, how did they get home? Why didn't they come back for it? Why did they leave it? Were they abducted? Did an alien beam them up when they exited the library? Have they been hiding out in the basement all week? Are they ever coming back? Were they just forgetful and tey walked home and they think someone stole thier bike from thier house? Doesnt' this guy have an ounce of curiosity?

I went back to the park. I couldn't stop the car nearby and had to wade thru the deep snow to get in position for the trees. I drove on further. The winds had changed and I couldn't get the shot I wanted of the smokestack, but I might have gotten something half decent anyway. I went back to the house without a roof, that I saw the other day and wished I had my camera. Good concept in theory but no decent angles to shoot. Man I felt good shooting. I havent' had the camera out of the house in weeks! Ahhhh.... got a fix today!
It reached a high of -7 F today -- too cold to go outside for
shooting.
I took advantage of the sweltering 27 degrees, low wind. After all this 0-15 degrees with -10 to +5 degree wind chill factors, I felt like it was spring! LOL!
