>>> Challenge #8: Road <<<

This is the road I was already going to :-)
http://www.lemans.org/2003/24auto/index_gb.shtml

I dont know if I will get any pics suitable for a challenge and
perhaps now I have mentioned it I should not submit them anyhow ...
but its a truly great piece of french road imho

at that website you can see that there are some pro photographers
there already making images .... well I dont actually want to make
any like you can see there so far ... its funny how they could want
to make them like that ... I guess thats their target usage .. mine
is rather different ....

Looking forward to it .... packing now :-)
Just me .. I am free yipee

Far out. Have a good time!

Good thinking Dan.

There's a road in Colorado that would be perfect for this challenge. Except the road race isn't until the Fourth of July. Couldn't find the aerial photo of it online but you probably know what I'm talking about. ;)

Cassandra
I received an email that brought up the idea of a disclaimer on the
web site saying that I'm not responsible for any injuries that
occur while someone is taking a photo for the challenge, etc. The
author didn't say I should add this - just mentioned the idea.

I had never thought of this, but it's an interesting observation,
given the increasing lack of personal responsibility here in the
U.S. (not directed at anyone involved here - just a general
observation IMHO).

I don't think I'll put anything on the web site, but I'll just say
it here: When you're taking a photo for this challenge, please
don't get hit by a car, truck, motorcycle, scooter, bicycle,
tricycle, train, airplane, bus, skateboard, trolley, etc. Did I
leave anything out? ;)

It might be Pike's Peak Hill Climb (near Colorado Springs). This year's race is June 28th, so I'd just miss it.

Here's the link: http://www.ppihc.com .

Is this what you're thinking about? Here's a map of the course:

Dan

Yep that's it! And that's the image I was searching for too! How'd you find it?!

That is one awesome race. I haven't been to it myself but seen photos and videos of past races. Those guys are crazy!!!

I searched for "pikes peak" on google, and found the link below for the Pike's Peak Hill Climb. The link to that map is somewhere in that website.

Hi Dan,

You forgot about the local Chapter of Hell's Grannies, they are quite fearsome around these parts!!

Mark my husband and I visited Pike's Peak a few years ago and those
really are hairpin turns!
Cassandra - imho -

no others do it - like hairpin turns do :-)

I scared myself almost more than at any other time coming down the Pyrenees on an old Suzuki ....

After an hour or so of fun .. flat out accelerating .. hard braking and bend swinging .. my brakes over heated ... completely spongey .. squeeze all you like and stamp your feet .. but * no slowee down at all * oh my god ... it looks like we are going to meet

but sooner than I had planned :-) [1]

............

That Hillclimb looks like quite an event ...

I never heard about it before and when you first mentioned the road I thought "cycle racing" ... a la tour de france ...

--
Mark

[1] turned out I think that the front brake pads were worn down just a bit too much and they could not loose the heat at all through the backs so the fluid boiled and made its own air bubbles .. just road brakes not racing ones or anything ...

Mark there are motorcycle, truck and stock car races there, as well as footraces. I can't imagine running that course. I could hardly breathe just standing on the summit! 8-p

Hi still here burning CDs .. gawd its a slow business

thinking about it I cant remember exactly ... its possible I managed to get something with the back brake and perhaps engine braking .... I probably had to use the oncoming lane and perhaps some more ... and cause I am writing this I guess there was no one coming at the time .. I cant even remember precisely if it was a right or left hander either now .. it was spain so I would habe at least started out on the right lane .. but I just know the feeling when you squeeze that lever coming to a haripin and nothing happens .... none of that hard deceleration which you have been used to .. the strong nose dive ... which you have come to trust and love .... and instead an immediate feeling of dread shock and sheer terror ....

later in that trip I had to lock the wheels and slide into a crash barrier near Toulouse as I had been reading a map on my tank bag and when I looked up I realised my tenuos hold on life was about to be tested again .. :-) I can recall all of that event and the nice people who helped glue stitch and later weld my machinery and luggage back together so I could make my boat back to UK and be back at work on time.

Photography is just so much a "safer" hobby :-) even when the subject is roads :-)

Mark you sound like a free spirited soul who enjoys living on the edge. But what wonderful adventures you have to tell your children!

Best of luck in the new Fuji Talk challenge. :)

I wish :-)

Erm there is another way of looking at that of course which is that when my lad says he wants togo out on a motorcycle I really know why I as a parent should be worried :-)

Cassandra .. he cant even stay upright with stabilisers at the moment !!

Best of luck in the new Fuji Talk challenge. :)
Cassandra
Thanks .. Cassandra, not really sure I will enter a pic actually though .... despite liking all you folks and Dan & his site a lot I am starting to dislike challenges and photo competitions and things like that .. quite a lot .. I am only competing with myself .... really ... and I can rate my own progress on that front I think

It appears he takes after his daddy since he looks like he's really enjoying that bicycle! ;) I take it this is your daughter driving the car?

Yes, some people are taking the challenges much too seriously. I'll enter if I can come up with a suitable shot but at the moment I'm drawing a complete blank.

Its one of his girlfriends ...

Always a mistake to try to show off for the girls ...
I could have told him that
It never worked for me .. !!

Just about finished with CDs now ... see you perhaps next week ...
Take care its Friday the 13th !!

One of his girlfriends!! lol Of course -- it's only natural for a boy to try to impress the girls with his remarkable motor skillls. And if that doesn't do the trick I'm sure he'll win her heart with his boyish charm. ;)

Backing up files is a bother but the peace of mind it gives is worth the effort. I updated mine last week. Don't recall how many CDs I burned but it was quite a few. Photo files add up fast!!! Double copies with one set going to our son's for safekeeping.

You have a good weekend too Mark. :)

Rutger those are awesome pictures!!! Son has a turbo charged Honda Civic. Ran the 1/4 mi. in 12.3 @ 116 a couple of weeks ago. The car is not stripped down to lighten the weight either.

Hi Dan.

Oh Dear.

I'm sorry to report that my poor little 2800 received a good whack on its zoom to abruptly end the final shoot for the last challenge. ( Sad, but alas, true :( ) It is at the NJ repair center - I hope it returns in time for the current challenge!

While it was my lack of diligence to secure the tripod head which caused the camera to swing down and commit hari kari, surely it was YOUR challenge which caused the excitement which led to a perfectly understandable momentary lapse of conscience decision.

I'm afraid my crack team of snarling solicitors is already loosed and closing in.

Your disclaimer has shown me the folly of my litigious ways. Please accept my apologies.

Arm yourself with garlic, silver bullets, and ethics manuals! :) :D
