>>> Challenge 74: Character Studies <<<

I know I said I wouldn't start a discussion on pricing a picture. But I wasn't anticipating the present scenario. I've posted a copy of "Research" (Challenge 61) to my weather station blog. Another weather aficionado spotted it and fell in love with it. She wants a poster sized print to hang up in her classroom. The thing that throws a monkey wrench into the works is that that implies she is a teacher. I feel good about charging a decent price for this picture. On the other hand, I feel bad about asking too much from a teacher. Suggestions?

...that's exactly what I would do.

This would be good experience in printing poster size for you and, we can never gather enough good Karma in this Universe of ours.

Hadn't thought of that idea. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll probably have it printed through mpix, though, depending upon the size wanted. I have an Epson 1280, so my maximum size is limited to something like 13 inches wide. I've been extremely happy with mpix in the past, although the largest print I've had them make so far was 11 X 14.

Hey Victor,

I use White House (www.whcc.com) & they are excellent!!! I've ordered many 20x30 prints through them.

Actually, our elementary school principal approached me last year about taking some pictures of the students to put up in the hallways. We were a brand new school, so the hallways were pretty bare. They ordered 12 20x30 prints framed in a "frameless" glass frame. The school is very contemporary so the no frame look fit in well.

I charged the school my actual cost. Donated my time taking the pictures & post processing. I did put my signature in the bottom corner (very tiny & color matched to blend in well). Once the parents saw the pictures, it resulted in some photo work for me too. :)

Thanks for the whcc recommendation. I've heard good things about them, but I've never used them. If someone has used both them and mpix, I'd like to hear a comparison.

....I was trying to have some fun with the line from, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, were they keep repeating...Who are those guys?

Be that as it may and ignoring my failed attempts at humor....I do have to send out a very grateful thank you for your help in clearing cookies and whatnot.

You help with the size images, you help people get logged back on...you are seriously good people.

Thanks again.

Best Wishes,

Having just read your posts about this, the other day, I just ran into my first instance of this.

Rather than being bewildered, I knew exactly what was going on thanks to your help here.

I was copying a few directories off of a network at work onto a portable USB drive (one of those tiny pocket gizmos) and Windows came up with a warning that not all of the data streams for a certain file could be saved due to the limitations of the file system on the target drive.

Sure enough, my little pocket drive was formated as FAT32 and presumably the drive I was copying from was NTFS.

This was a graphics file. I didn't write down the details, and I've slept since then, so my brain has been reset, but suffice it to say that it was good to know what was happening there.

Now I'm thinking of reformatting my pocket drive to NTFS if I can :)

This was a graphics file.
It would be interesting to know which application used the file that resulted in the ADS and what data it stored there. This is the data you will lose if you copy the file back off the pocket drive over the hard disk copy. It my could be nothing important, for example a chache for better performance, or it could be useful data, such as an undo back to a pre-modified layer, or meta data such as keywords and comments.

I wound up using mpix, since I already had an established account with them. Meanwhile, I went through the process of account registration with whcc, and I'm very happy with them so far.

Anyway, the 20 by 30 inch print came in today. This is the largest print of my own photography I've ever seen. I have to say, it looks just as good as a poster as it does online. Better, in fact. Even though the picture is just a crop of the full frame, and even though the camera was merely a 10D, there's sufficient detail to hold a viewer's interest, even from close range.

The print goes out to the buyer tomorrow.
