>>> Challenge 6 - The Wide : Open <<<

I don't know who handles all of this, but I am willing to offer
free hosting for all of this (I'm guessing someone is currently
paying for a pbase account). I'm not sure what your requirements
are, but I could grant you a gig of space, 25gb of bandwidth/month,
some mysql databases (so you can create php based galleries and
multiple users, etc), and some other options if you would like. If
your requirements are otherwise, let me know as I am willing to
work with you on your requirements. This would allow you to better
share larger files. If whoever runs these contests is interested
you can drop me an e-mail or contact me on AIM
(beastbyz),MSN([email protected]), or ICQ (2035642). I run my own
servers, so speed and stability are nearly perfect (currently 52
days up time) and you would receive a control panel as well
(cPanel), so it would be easy to manage.

Matt
Thanks very much. It could really help. We need to be runnning php scripts. Are you a Canon SLR owner? I guess you are being in this forum!

I'll pass the word around to a few of the otheres and email you shortly as I think we just got some space elsewhere!

A great offer, much appreciated. Thanks

I'm giving you a standing ovation as we speak. Is there just
nothing you are not good at? LOL!
Well, thanks now. Always nice to have some of my stronger efforts
appreciated. You can sit down and stop clapping now. :-)
PHEW! Took you long enough... my hands are bloody!
Of course I can't resist grabbing the camera and shooting more
of the kids which just gets me deeper under the pile.
If you saw my stack of untamed images, you would wonder if I ever
shot anything except my kids. As an amateur photog and parent, I
can think of no better subject matter.
LOL! Yes, it's hard to resist the cuteness factor! :)
I'm starting to get the hang of the flash. You might say a light
just went on! LOL!
Yep yep yep, yes you are. I'd say (... searching for words
here...) the light just went on. Now, is anyone home? Sorry, my
boyish impulses wouldn't leave that one untended.
GROAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =:0
Hey, hey, now let's not get flirty! LOL! ;)
For flash practice I ended up interrupting myself with these...
You should interrupt yourself more often. These are terrific,
Lonnit!! Granted, I'm a bit biased (I dig portraits more than
anything), but I consider these some of the best shots I've seen
you post.
Thanks!
it with a landscape perspective, son nestled up tight on the left
or right margin, then trim it to a Wide:Open perspective ( nudge ).
Could be a big favorite on voting day.
Unfortunately I've got no entries left; I'm all used up. :( I really should know better by now, to leave one space open until the very last minute, just in case somthing inspired comes along.

Warmly,
Lonnit

I figured php would be the best way to go about the photo galleries. And yes, I own a 300D but I am quite the noob with SLR cameras (coming from a Nikon CP 4500). Hopefully these contests will help me learn :)

Yes, there are both pros and cons to bumping threads. I manage and moderate my own forums, and I have a similar problem that Phil has -- bandwidth limitations. Unfortunately, my bandwidth capability is far less than Phil's, or about 20 gig/month.

PROS

The most obvious pro to bumping is that the thread moves to the top of the list, so it's visible.

Another is that search engine time is reduced. On a CPU limited site, you'd want to favor bandwidth of CPU.

CONS

In counterpoint to the first pro, bumping moves DOWN all the other threads. Bumping is therefore a selfish act that penalises those that have no interest in the thread. Note that I'm not being judgmental here, merely stating a fact.
Bumping uses up disk space with essentially useless records.
It also clutters up the thread, sucking up valuable bandwidth.

In any case, if the forum rules call for no bumping, then if you want to continue to post, don't bump. I keep my own links to the challenges that I'm interested in, so bumping is not beneficial to me like it is to others.

Victor, while I agree with your pros and cons, the bumping of the thread is not only for those who have already posted and/or entered the challenges, it's also to attract newcomers and encourage them to join in.

Because we're all on different time zones, the thread gets buried quite rapidly during the course of a day. If it wasn't pushed to the top every 12 hours or so, only those who already know about it would enter.

And as these are community challenges, designed to increase our photography skills by learning from each other, I don't believe the bumping of a challenge thread is a selfish act. But the bumping of a personal thread "Look at my new photos" certainly is.

There are many ways of pushing a thread to the top of the list. The word "bump" need never be used.

Sure, broad, indiscriminate use of bumping is a bad thing. But if you think about the enormous amount of activity and dialog that comes with each Challenge, the number of related threads/posts here is minuscule. Given the sense of community it reinforces (albeit a fraction of this forum), it seems a comparative bargain. We average one thread per week, with maybe 50-100 posts each. Compare this to the wash of topics posted daily and, again, the Challenge threads seem like a high-leverage bargain.

I think this is why Phil (and everyone else) has looked the other way on the bumping of Challenge threads, here and everywhere else.

Related, I'd really like to know if Bauerman was banned due to bumping, or if there was something else in the mix.

Thanks,
Joe

Joe, I'd like to know too and so would he. It's the only thing he can think of, as there was a minor "dispute" on the thread when a newcomer complained about the bumping, and pointed out that is was against forum rules. But it was all rather polite and confined to 5 or 6 posts, at least 3 of which were from other participants, explaining the importance of keeping
the challenge thread active.

And Joe....if the bumping of challenge threads is banned altogether, you're gonna have to find a new career path ;-)

Ergo my interest here. I'm old enough now to recognize I'm not gonna be a rock star or a free safety in the NFL, so it crushes me to see other, more realistic opportunities fade as well.

Didn't get a chance to take many shots over the holidays but couldn't let the challenge go by without adding something to it.....Anyway there are some cracker entries in this challenge and I didn't want to vote without having a shot in myself.

Anyway I've added a few late entries, hope they are not too late iso?

Teapot.

Joe, looks like you're gonna have to take up gutter sweeping....at least it's legal. It appears the b*mping (dirty word around these parts now) isn't a career option any more.

I had a reply to my email to the webmaster,in which I asked why our mini-challenge thread was removed.
Here is the response:

"Bumping is not allowed, as clearly stated in our posting rules.

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/rules.asp?forum=1010

That particular thread was 'taken care of' automatically because of this."

Well, we're gonna have to fin other means of keeping the challenge threads at the top of the list. Filling the posts with irrelevant banter? I can do that! I can even keep it on topic.....maybe I'll start shooting rulers and posting my results!
