**** Challenge 5 main thread ******

Claudio,

a) congrats.
b) Another "concept", or maybe not.

http://www.joy.com

c) Explaining the theme, using the AMERICAN dictionary of the ENGLISH

language, will undoubtedly bring a JOYful smile to most of the queen's subjects already.

I looked it up the the Britannica, and the word does not exist. James JOYce is the first entry. So I guess the Britannica does not deal with concepts. Hence my new challenge rule: the chosen subject must have an entry in the Encyclopedia Britannica. Examples would be : bicycle, house (see mansion) or paperweight.

d)It has been raining for days now, so we'll have to turn to the mineral collection for a mineral showing "joy". Could be a challenge.

Thank you!

maybe John will revert to Red ! . Molly seemed pretty happy in that
picture juggling glasses (ohhh, no I've given him an excuse to
re-use it ;-) ....

...in reality I've learned never to guess what John may have up his
sleeves ( or in his barn full of trained animals...). I'm looking
forward to be amazed once again.

Claudio
Well done on gaining the mantle, and great choice of new theme!

I'm just concerned that John Down Under may have to start feeding
Prozac to Molly and the Ants...

... by what I have no idea! LOL

I am about to grab my first entry that I took just the other day from its unprocesseed folder and prepare it to post in the exhibition gallery. That won't take long, unless of course I get distracted by more interesting things. :o)

Actually, I do have an idea or two for teh comp. Maybe I will use another sub-theme in the comp gallery. You won't believe what I have in mind, but I think many of us will be able to relate. Might take some doing ... or not. Must start searching for the ingredients. ;o)

For Claudio's sake, I think changes would be made in Challenge #6.

I agree with a 1-10 (or, better, 1-12: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,10,12) points system.

Also think it will be interesting make a web site dedicated to best photos from Challenges (lets say, first and second places) and show the world "simple" people can do great thing too.

What do you guys and ladies think about it?

Cheers

Hi Jose,

I agree there is no need to be thinking about changing the points system just yet. It seems to work ok and 16 points per gallery will provide more flexibility than for C4.

I know it contains more than just the top 2 pics from each challenge, but I think the Minolta Challenge Hall of Fame does a pretty good job of showing almost what you are suggesting. Is that close enough?

Congratulations Klaudio on your choice of Joy as the new subject!

It's a promising theme, no idea on my side at the moment, just thinking and thinking and thinking,...something has to pop-up very soon...then turn on the camera and start to shoot...feel a little pain, but that's the way Challenge goes, isn't it? :-)

When you said "try to do it without incorporating a person"...pain started to grow! LOL

I foresee a real challenge this time! ;-)

Thanks and let's start the game!!

Cheers, Feri

Hi,

I fully agree not to change rules once the game has started. If Claudio would have wanted, he would have put up a thread for suggestions, but since he is our Moderator, his word is final, rules are set already, so let's follow the prevailing guidelines "as is"! :-)

Now, regarding the 1-10 system, I have a doubt it would work...moreover I'm afraid we would scare away some voters as a result! Here's why! Let's assume both galleries will have 80 entries and 40 people will cast their votes. Per gallery that means a massive number of 3,200 points, total 6,400 points per Challenge! Who's gonna take the time to cast so many votes, I'm mean 160 points per voter, even looking at it from the point of view of manual typing into the thread! :-(

And yet, we even didn't think about poor Moderator when it comes to collect and count the votes! :-( Two Excel tables with 3,200 inputs each, uhh! A nightmare, isn't it, Claudio!

Even if their is a site that would help automate the voting system, I would still like to refer to my first worry of loosing voters as said above! Just my thoughts! :-)

Anyone?

Cheers, Feri

Ok,

Since it seems most like the old 16 point rule , we don't want to change rules after the Challange is started, and other alternative are still in flux or too complicated, I'm officially confirming that we will stay with the original 16 points rule for this challenge. Rules page has been updated.

Thanks everybody... now back to looking for Joy

Claudio
You have 16 points total to work with for each gallery if you
choose. (32 total for both galleries)
The first & only "requirement"... Cast 4 points for your very
favorite SINGLE photo in each gallery.
So we're back to 16 points right? I hope so. It was tough to give
out only 8 more after giving 4 for first place.

Hi Paul,

Thanks

Well, as a Queen's subject myself (I've taken my oath of loyalty for my Canadian citizenship ;-) ) I think I am more that entitled to pick my sources as I please ...They may now revoke my citizenship but that's another story LOL :-)
I looked it up the the Britannica, and the word does not exist.

Nahh... to litteral and OldWorld for me ;-) . But I would still find it challenging and interesting to compete with such theme..

challenge.
Ahh, don't the associate mineral with feeling, astrology etc? Some other suggestions: try give your wife a big diamond ring as a gift and document the event ;-) or more selfish, buy yourself that long desired new piece for your collection and take a self-portrait with the mineral..

I have to admit that that last bit is really challenging for myslef too. That's why it's not really part of the main theme, but only a tease for people enjoying tough assigments ;-) . I will personally keep it in mind and try my best, but if I see a great Joy opportunity with people, I'll definetely take it and submit it.

Hi folks,

Looks like things are slowing down at work and I'll have time to use the camera. I've missed taking shots so I brought the cam on my last business trip to Iowa, here what you can do when stuck in a Hotel room in the "middle of nowhere" :-)

The shot was a bit late for the "Alone" competition. BTW Great shots. I would have had a hard time dividing up 16 points...

Best,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Welcome back, longtime no see, eh?

Hope you signed a good contract in this hotel at the VIP lounge clearly visible at the left wing of the building.

Good thought of you in the world we live in today not to leave the car outside, I agree its much safer to park in a reserved lot on level -4 in the basement!!! LOLOL

Now you have no more excuse to escape Challenge #5, contract is on, office is lousy, so you'd better get down to shooting lot-n-lot-n-lots of "JOY" pics!!! :-)

Cheers, Feri

i'm still confused about the "1-10" thing anyway....... with the system we have, it is "totaled" and using your math, if 40 people voted, and voted for the same image as a "4" pointer, that would be.... uhm..., well..... well, it'd be less than 3200 i know that ;-)

i'm still in favor of the "sweet 16"....... simple, effective and enough points that the voter doesn't stress out much
