Challenge 24 vote observation (problem ?)

Or at least what we think is best. :-)

Lisa
Well can pbase be set to load the latest entries at the beginning?
That would help offset the time of entry disadvantage.

Less entries would help - even with broadband it is too hard to
give a credible viewing to all entries. That being said, several
challenges had much lower entires so the hosts allowed more. It is
hard to predict how many to allow.

As far as fewer voting - seems like a cumbersome system in general
  • big time committment. This time neither Sarah nor I voted. We
had a wind storm knock our satellite receiver off just a hair.
This resulted in intermittent and slow service when we did have it,
with long blackouts in between. It stabilized near the end of the
voting, by then we were behind on other pressing business and
didn't have time to view the galleries enough to vote responsibly.

Hosts should make sure everybody knows that anybody belonging to
DPreview can (is encouraged to) vote too - not just those who
entered.

Just a few thoughts. Cindy

I agree with Ann, Dee's winner was subtle in the colors. Now about
the other theory, do you remember if she entered it early on in the
contest?
I agree with that too Lisa - (how boring if we all agree) - but wouldn't you also say that it has an instant appeal even in the thumbnail version? I found myself looking at the larger version almost to confirm my initial response. I then found that there was more to it than meets the eye at thumbnail size (surprise, surprise) and that it was a photo with a depth of interest. I'm never going to accuse it of being unsubtle - it has immediacy AND subtlety.

Some photos have one or the other. Some have neither - I've got lots of them on my PC!

Some - a few - have both, and they are the winners with me.

Cheers.

Part of the goal for me is to see whether I can put up something
which people do not recognize as my work, that might be quite a
challenge in itself.
Hmmmm, unless you majorily change your style I'll be able to spot you! (I think! LOL)

If somehow you know it is mine, feel free to
disqualify it on the last day, that way you will have your way AND
I wil have discovered how the experiment went.
It's not about having my way or your way. New people are entering the challenge all the time and one of the weaknesses of the challenge the way we handle it is not being able to know who is posting an entry. The anonymous situation has taken care of itself. If you choose to enter using a different name I have no way of telling if it's you or someone new to the challenge -- do I?
As always in STF others will do as they please, within the rules
including entering under their own names. I'm not sure mandating
that people reveal who they are does anything other than allow
previously held notions about a person's style to percolate into
the interpretation of the new piece, and this experiment for me is
a really intersting one. I'd feel much better if you'd OK it.
Huh? You are losing me a little here. I can keep a secret if you want to tell me the name you plan to use, since I probably won't vote unless I vote very early -- e-mail me if you want... but as I said before I have no way of knowing when a new name turns up if it's someone with a "fake name" or a new person. I can understand your experiment, but to be honest, I think your "normal" work is a little too "out there" for most (not all, I do hedge my bets, LOL) of the STF people voting.

You need to find a place where your outlook and style of photography is appreciated -- and where you'll be challenged by others with the same outlook and style.

As I've said before I admire your thinking and your execution it's always interesting!
I figured you'd feel OK about the one entry thing.....that decision
is for others, the nom de lens obviously for me. Thanks for
responding.
No problem! Look forward to seeing what you come up with!

If you enter an entry as "someone" or anonymous for this current
challenge, you will have to reveal your name the last day of the
challenge in order for your entry to be considered for voting. I
can not in good conscience announce that "someone" won the
challenge and then wait for "someone" to come forth.

The next host can decide to do an anonymous one entry per person
challenge if they wish.

Remember you don't have to post 4 entries -- I didn't the last
challenge.

It's been pretty repeatable that there are more photographers who
post photos than actually vote. Voting is open to anyone in
dpreview, and anyone who is in STF and it's always been this way.

My take on the challenges is that people who don't enter, don't
want to vote.

Part of my philosophy on this challenge is that it is a learning
and sharing challenge and the more we see how others solve the
challenge the more we learn as individuals.

I limited the challenge to knives, forks and spoons for a reason.
The next winner can do cutlery or what ever topic they choose.
Can't think of what to do with knives, forks and spoons? Well,
that's the challenge. Start thinking!

I just wish some of you would do some searching and read some of
the suggestions posted since the challenges began. Many different
tactics were tried. Fortunately the challenges are still working
today -- and hopefully they are still fun and educational to us as
photographers, no matter where we are on the curve, newbie,
beginner, intermediate, advanced or pro.

Happy Clicking!
