Challenge #15 - Voting Thread

...because there are some choices to do. I just have to look them
all over again.

:)
LOL, you were about to get murdered!

I look forward to your votes, just make sure you vote for the right
ones.
Oh, I always vote for the right ones, don't worry. The problem is with all the other voters sometimes turns everything upside down. Just as in the other forum. How can a misfocused picture get all the votes?

:))

Jonas

I had a hard time with the "backlighting" theme both with my entries and with judging - so I'm not neccessarily being consistent in application of what "backlighting" means. For purposes of judging, I decided not to include sillhouettes, though there are some excellent examples.
Vote using this template:

Main Challenge:
1. (5 points): Teahouse
2. (3 points): Light Hay
3. (1 point): Homework

Exhibition Gallery:
1. (5 points): Old Lutheran Cemetery . . .
2. (3 points): Glasses
3. (1 point): Stare

Well I do think that silhouettes are backlit, but they seem to be a distinct subset of the theme.

without backlighting? If someone can explain that I'd like to know. There is nothing in the challenge description saying not to enter Silhouettes. If it's not your cup of tea, don't vote for them but to exclude them just for being Silhouettes is wrong and an injustice towards some fine images in this challenge.

Dang - I was just trying to explain my vote, as others have done above. And, I chose to go with Sean's original description of what the challenge was in my "interpretation".

"Backlighting is the use of a light source from behind your subject. Backlighting isn't the same as a silhouette, as you usually maintain detail in your subject for backlighting, although all interpretations of the theme should be discussed and encouraged!"

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1036&message=20265220&problem=max

For my votes (but not necessarily my entries) I was looking for at least a little detail in the subject and not a completely black main subject. Next time I won't try to explain my votes at all :).

Betsy,

You hit the nail on the head here.

While some may feel otherwise a silhoutte is clearly not considered backlighting in any way, shape or form. I think you handled the topic well and supported your position correctly.

There are some really good images in this contest. But technically, most do not fall into what is, photographically, backlighting. That is one of the primary lessons taught to classically trained photographers. The reason...it requires a fundamentally different train of thought and techinical expertise to execute as well as a different approach to handling optics and subjects.

While I like quite a few images in both galleries... chosing one based on the criteria is a bigger challenge than the challenge itself.... :)

Hi Stephen!

technically, most do not fall into what is, photographically,
backlighting. That is one of the primary lessons taught to
classically trained photographers.
Technically, the only difference between backlight and a pure silhouette is the strength of the backlight in relation to the ambient/subject light. The Wikipedia article basically agrees: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backlighting_%28lighting_design%29
Of course these are taught differently in photo school :)

Well, Sean as the host said that he considers backlighting and silhouette as different but all interpretations should be considered. For me, as long as the light comes from the back, the image is eligible. But with some images, I'd say the light is from the side or even partially from the front.
While I like quite a few images in both galleries... chosing one
based on the criteria is a bigger challenge than the challenge
itself.... :)
Probably improves the chances of my entries ;)

As interesting as the "Is a Silhouette a subset of Backlighting or not?" is, it should have been done while the challenge is running. I think at the time of voting, all images are to be considered eligible and thus fit for voting. Therefore, my votes are as follows.

Be aware that my post includes open opinion. If you can't stand that or feel you might be influenced in your voting, just vote now and then decide whether you want to read my message.

Main Challenge:

1. (5 points):
Hopper

I like the composition and how the hopper is sharply in focus in front of this nice sunsettish sky.

2. (3 points):
Tea House

Not sure what fascinates me. The geometric shapes, certainly, no people (relax...) and the subdued but effective colours. Well done!

3. (1 point):
End of Days

Just two colours, but so powerful. The subject is in the centre, but still, it works. I like the "technical aperture" creating the rays.

Honourable mentions (not in order):

Dark Side of the Moon:

Let down in the challenge by too much lighting from the front, but stunning as a photo anyway.

Light Hay:

Could have been my winner, but those two people in the frame really destroy 95% of the mood for me.

The Runner:

Great idea and as you can imagine, I like the reduced colours, but it doesn't jump at me as the others did.

Samburu:

Very nice how the rays come down almost perpendicularly, but that motion blur is distracting and I'm not sure the fugure adds to the image in the first place. The light rays and the person are fighting for my attention. Had the person been lighted by one of those rays, then there'd be some connection. But as it is, these are two subjects in one frame for me.

Other comments:
Back Swing - What?

Candid Cutie - There's a difference between Candid and Voyeur, and this has little artistic merit, IMO.

Exhibition Gallery:
1. (5 points):
Glasses

Simplicity at its finest - I'm sure setting this up was a lot more difficult than my comment makes it sound. The sterile impact it has really is impressive.

2. (3 points):
Out of the fog

It's rough, it's noisy, it is overexposed, it is underexposed. But yet/thus this thing has an impact almost knocking me from my seat.

3. (1 point):
Tubed and Shopped

Great. Seems I have an addiction for reduced colour variation, huh? Perfect crop and exposure.

Honourable mentions (not in order):
Monumental

As someone said, hard to think of getting a better shot from this. The winding tree is great for sure. Whether it is backlighting is debateable, IMO. Had the title been "Monument", I'd say it isn't, had it been "Tree", I'd say yes...

On the Summit
Very very nice.

Caress

Very nice idea and greatly seen with a title that brings it to life. But IMO the focus is at the wrong spot and thus no points from me.

Cheers
Jens

Well, I was hoping to wait until my good computer was delivered. Looks like it's too close to the deadline to risk. So, I'll have to make final decisions judging images from the crummy LCD screen on my work laptop. :-(

Plus I haven't read any of the other votes yet; dying to know if anyone has voted for my entry(s). Now that my vote is in, I can peek. :-)

[I did read the 'I have a problem' exchanges. As our old friend TresOkies would say: "BWAAHAAAHAAA!]

Main Challenge:
1. (5 points): Tea house
2. (3 points): For Vincent
3. (1 point): Hopper

Exhibition Gallery:
1. (5 points): The Giant
2. (3 points): Tubed and shopped
3. (1 point): On the Hunt

Love 'em or hate 'em, comments to follow in a reply to this msg.

between stating why you choose the images you did and why you didn't choose the other ones. Of the 50 + entries, you voted on 3, discounted 5-7 for being silhouettes, what about the other 40 or so images?

Betsy, I didn't mean to single you out but this was the second time the silhouette reason was stated and it didn't belong in the voting thread. I will admit that I forgot to include in my original posting that this should have been discussed during the challenge instead of voting. Sorry if it came across wrong.

Yes! I totally agree. The third person, almost invisible in the shadows, looks rather menacing, which is totally at odds with the ordinary-looking people in the sunbeam. If they weren't there... oooh. I actually had to go back and look and make sure I hadn't imagined the third person.
