Capture NX Software

It's an excellant raw processor in terms of results. Performance and user interface seem to bother some folks, not me though.
The only weaker aspect is the Dlighting compared to the shadows and
Highlights in PSCS2 but otherwise, it is fantastic.
it is going into a new level? With cost of $180? On May?

D200 users start placing orders!

I'm in the same boat - bought a new computer (w/Pentium D processor) and hoped thatNC 4.4 would run faster, but it won't even run. It does work with my older computer but it's so slow.

I have read on these forums dozens and dozens of posts claiming the Nicon Capture is slow. I just do not get this because since version 4.3 this is simply not the case.

What version of NC are you people complainig about?

On a proper PC Nikon Capture 4.4 is not a slow software. It is clearly faster than CS2.

Isn't the point of getting a new computer (one with multi-threading) so that you can run memory hungry programs more efficiently? Hope that NX takes care of this.

My own experience is that I can highlight 50 NEF files in Adobe Bridge, and right click to say "Open in Camera RAW" and they all come up in four or five seconds in ACR. If I try to open the same number of files in Capture 4.4, I could be waiting for a minute or two, and moving from one pic to the other in Capture can take several seconds, where in ACR it's basically an instant operation. I liked what I saw in Capture, but don't have the time to waste. I hope NX makes it better.

I have NC 4.4 running on a AMD dual core just fine. It initially soft rebooted my comptuer every time I tried to run it, but I removed one of the NC files from startup and all is well.

I hope that Nikon finally made it multithreaded. If they didn't, Bibble is starting to look better and better. You get multithreading and now Noise Ninja.

For those complaining about speed, it is a memory hog, but in my experience it isn't any slower than any of the other RAW processors if you have enough memory. I think the minimum is 1.5gb, and you go up from there depending on how you use the app and your computer.
Since upgrading my machine I've been unable to get NC to run, and
have been waiting for a newer version that hopefully addresses this
issue.

Looks very interesting.

hi,

i have a amd 3800 x2 dual processor machine too.
you have to do the following things:
-remove nikon capture from your machine

-run regsweeper.exe which is located in "Nikon Capture 4.2\NCap44de\DE\Nikon Capture 4\Utilities\DE\" in the installation package.
-reinstall nikon capture an i hope it will run.

let me know about the result.

thanks

chris

As starter of this thread I thank Alan, Dave, Michel,, Stanny, Chris and all other for their input. It really improved my knowledge a lot about Nikon software.(I am still waiting for my D200 but it seems that, in the Netherlands, Nikon at last is now steaming up with the camera)

Nikon has added all this fluff to Capture, but apparently no clone tool, which is the PS tool I use most often to remove dust spots and generally clean up the image a bit.

Mon amie,

I find it quite awful in its more important aspects. If you have tried used RML or Dcraw, you have to agree that NC only converts part of the data and with many flaws.

With very kind regards

Raul

RML, you need to be a nuclear physisist to understand how it works and relate to photography, no offense to Iliah or Peter, User interface is simply too complicated.

DCRaw, I don't like at all.

I'm running NC4.4 on a Pentium D 3.0GHz, 2 gig RAM, with Windows XP Pro and it has run flawlessly. My machine is a home built with an ASUS/Intel chipset motherboard. I haven't tried it on my wife's Pentium D, ASUS/ASUS chipset motherboard. I also have an nVidea 6 series video card.

I badly wanted this program to get out of beta with a usable interface to anyone with a brain slightly smaller than a planet.

But then Capture 4.4 came along and I've been extremely happy with the conversion quality, I certainly don't think it is awful in its more important aspects even if it does miss some of the data.

And it has a really easy to use interface which also links into CS2 easily.

Roll on Capture NX....as long as it is an improvement.

Really excited by the announcement. I love my workflow with Nikon View and Capture. But the speed is an issue when doing pro type tasks. I have about 250 images I need to tweak, edit and convert from the weekend and I don't look forward to the time it will take. I want these programs NOW.

Hoping NV Pro will be fast like PhotoMechanic and offer the memory card auto-eject after transfer and simultaneous ingest to 2 harddrives like PM has. And want Capture to still allow changes that correspond exactly to my camera settings. I think thats why I like Capture because it doesn't force you to use sliders. I guess we will have to wait and see.

The UI is actually quite similar to NC. The question will be how well it does RAW conversions. I'm sure it'll have the ability to do very well but it uses Camera RAW underneath. For me, Camera RAW requires a lot more tweaking than NC to get a good conversion.

Lightroom has some very nice features though.
