Calling All Canon DPP4 Users!

I agree and that is why those that take photography seriously should look into a Lightroom subscription. You got to pay to update DXO to the latest release every year, so it's technically a subscription without saying it's one.
The cost to upgrade DxO PL is half the standard cost - if upgrading within 2 years.

Right now for anyone with PL6 or PL7 the cost is US$120 (full price = US$240). I can't remember for certain, but I think this upgrade price dropped to around US$80 at BF.

So yes, if you feel the need to upgrade EVERY year, then there is a cost. If, however, you upgraded every 2 years, then the cost (currently) would be US$120 every 2 years, or US$80 every 2 years at BF (= $3.33/month). Remember that the upgrades are included during the first year, so it is only 1 year that you are without upgrades.

For comparison a basic Lightroom subscription is US$10/month, which is a fair bit more than $3/month (over 24 months).
Basic is a misnomer - You get LR, LRC, Photoshop, Adobe Portfolio, Bridge, iPad and iPhone apps, and cloud storage. It’s an excellent deal if you don’t mind subscriptions - and let’s face it, they’re all subscriptions whether in name or not.

Lightroom pricing and membership plans - Adobe
Oh right, my bad. That must be a recent change. I have been on that plan for years and my 9.99 still gets me all I listed.
Existing customers like myself were grandfathered into the 20GB plan that includes PS for $9.99 a month. Same amount I’ve been paying since 2018.

To keep new Adobe customers costs down they can the same plan with 1TB cloud storage but with no PS for $11.99 a month.

Very interesting and informative thread. I've ignored DPP since moving to DxO almost 3 years ago. Time to upgrade my "ancient" DPP and revisit its capabilities.
What I learned,

DPP has improved as I see in latest download but not good enough for me

DXO PL wins in some cases, loses to LR in others

DXO PL has raised its pricing though still less expensive than LR if you update every two years

I may give LR another try if they offer discount pricing
Depends on where you live Amazon offers deals once in a while. B&H too. If you don’t need PS you can get LrC at a good price. Since advanced masking was introduced I haven’t sent a file to PS since LrC 11 abs now it’s version 14.

Everything goes up. Adobe kept my pricing the same as promised for now but I don’t trust any big corporation. Adobe once said LrC would never go subscription but it did. I suppose if they had stayed with perpetual pricing would have likely gone up every year.

I’ll ride it out as long as I can and the non PS is available if other changes come. If I wanted to use DPP’s Neural Engine for Denoise AI I’m not sure you get the value for the cost. I’ve never explored it.

Ah yes, that’s me too. I didn’t realise it had changed. It’s still a great deal, especially now LR can remove items just as well as photoshop can these days. Depending, of course, but plenty of photographers can probably do without PS. And they dropped PS but made it 1TB cloud storage. That’s still an excellent deal - again if one doesn’t mind a subscription.

Well what happened was the price really didn't go up. The 1TB plan that offered LrC, Lr and PS was always $19.99 US. The 20GB plan was $9.99 US. Adobe just discontinued the 20GB plan for new customers and grandfathered it for existing customers.

The only difference is if existing customers want to maintain the annual price of $119.88 (9.99 x 12) they have to pay that up front annually. If existing customers want to continue to pay monthly then the price goes up to $14.99 a month US.

When my plan comes up for renewal in November I'll switch to the annual pay up front for the year account. Not sure of how many wouldn't choose that option. I did that from 2018 to 2023 because I didn't want to see Adobe on my monthly credit card statement. In 2023 I decided to give the pay monthly approach a go.

I will need some type of Denoise AI be it DPP, Adobe, Topaz, DXO, ON1, etc unless I win a lottery. I can't afford a $15,009 f/4 telephoto prime. Even then Denoise AI of any type would come in handy.

At one time as I was using Adobe I had DXO PureRaw, Topaz Photo AI (and the individual apps) and ON1 NoNoise. As soon as Adobe released Denoise AI I got rid of everything expect for Topaz Sharpen AI which I only use if I really need it. Not too many OOF files survive my first few rounds of pre-culling using DPP. It has to be pretty special to save.

If the day comes that I drop Adobe I'll have a serious look at Canon's Neural Engine. I still think I'll need something like Affinity to finish the files. Currently LrC is easier/more efficient for me as everything is under one roof. I'm also not tempted to update 3rd party NR apps anymore as I always did that. I liked the latest tech and it drove me nuts if I didn't have it. Kinda like GAS but for software. That has saved me $100+ a year.

Err, no - at least not for the "general public".

Not sure about your country, but as per Mac's link (for US) the cheapest plan including PS is US$20/month, and the cheapest plan is actually $12/month or US$144 per year (LR, LRC & mobile) and no mention of Portfolio & Bridge - compared to an annual DxO PL upgrade (at BF prices) of US$80 per year (obviously half of that if you upgrade every second year).

Bridge is free anyway as far as I know. I’ll check about Portfolio. There is also an upfront cost to purchase a DXO license you did not factor in. Of course breaking that down over time it reduces but you still have to front the money.

Also neither of us have the statistics to prove otherwise but bases on reading these forums for near 20 years I think the majority don’t upgrade every second year. Come fall threads speculating of what new features are coming and people can’t wait for it. I may be wrong which is fine.

While the cost is obviously a consideration, to me at least, the ease of workflow is more important. If it was just cost based, I would stick with DPP, but anything I can do to reduce the time spent sorting and editing the (usually) thousands of images after a decent holiday is worth a lot more.

I just find that DxO gets me there at least 95% of the time (after the initial cull in a viewer of course) with no further software required, and the transition from uncorrected RAW to JPEG is simple - no creating huge 16bit TIFF files in DPP first (which chew disc space at usually over 100Mb each), then importing into a LR catalogue, then exporting to another folder (my previous workflow). DxO does all of that quite simply in one place and one folder.

I must admit though, I tend to forget about the initial cost a lot more quickly that getting a monthly reminder :-D

No need to be rude. I know what I get and what it costs. That pricing is new for this year. Previously it was around 10 per year for LR, LrC, and PS, plus 20gb cloud storage. I haven’t been keeping up with prices, I first started my subscription it was a long time ago, when it first started. Then it was 9.99 per year, and that’s what it remains for me. I am just a member of the general public, I’m not sure what you meant by that.

You already get bridge and portfolio, and you always get the windows, Mac , iphone and iPad versions, and apparently the android versions of LR and PS. There also a few other web based bits and pieces I think you get access to with a sub.

I actually just started to seriously use dpp4. I can’t believe I have waited this long to put the effort in. It’s done incredible things for my photos.

I came from Aperture to LR when support for the former ended. Then I just stayed with LR.

I purchased an R1 which was my first mirrorless (I shoot for a living). I just wasn’t impressed with what I was producing with LR. Coming from 5div’s I was expecting something but I wasn’t sure what. So I tried DPP out. I’m hooked.

The images are just wonderful. My workflow is now:

Cull with DPP (I used to use fastrawviewer, which is also excellent). 1* for colour and 2* for black and whites.
Put them into collections colour/black and white.

For the colour photos I;

-Select all photos in the folder view then -

-portrait picture style
-use DLO

-Auto gamma

-alo plus face lighting

i do the same for the BW collection but I check the monochrome style

Then I go through the photos for a check, maybe adjust some colours if I need, or brightness. But they’re generally all quite ready to go to the next step with nothing else. I export the tiffs then

after that i open the tiffs in bridge then in ACR I normally add a contrast curve, I do straightening and cropping, and I use their excellent AI removal to clean up backgrounds (litter, or what have you). That’s basically it, though if there are exposure issues or other tweaks need I sometimes use masks and local adjustments. I go into photoshop from there if I need to retouch skin or something like that .

this has been my workflow for about a month, so it’s still been tweaked

things I noticed immediately, my photos look much better, cleaner - and my editing process is much much quicker

They have just made the Neural Processor thingy available for Macs (well I just noticed it at least), so I am going to see what that’s like on my next few shoots this week.

I’m very excited about DPP - I just think it’s made my photos a notch above what they were before - coupled with the R1 I’m a very happy camper
How do you do auto gamma for multiple images? I couldn't find that function in DPP (I use it on a MacBook).

Apologies, I was not trying to be rude. I have no idea when the prices changed, but I last looked quite a few months ago, and those were the prices I saw. I replied to your post before reading all the subsequent posts, so it seems that your price is a grandfathered price for long time users (perhaps since before 2018 - 7 years ago), which is somewhat different to current prices.

What I meant by "general public" is people, like me, who look at the price online - we do not see the special grandfathered deal that you referred to. Your price would be nice, but it is unavailable to the "general public".

I understand. I believe it changed in around March or something? I don’t know, I was only made aware of the change due to this thread. It’s been the same for a long time I believe.

I couldn't find that function in DPP (I use it on a MacBook).

in the thumbnail library type view, you can select multiple photos and apply edits across them all without having to enter the specific edit section.

While the cost is obviously a consideration, to me at least, the ease of workflow is more important. If it was just cost based, I would stick with DPP, but anything I can do to reduce the time spent sorting and editing the (usually) thousands of images after a decent holiday is worth a lot more.
workflow - I deal with thousands in a shoot -- use Faststone first for selection/culling - it will save you HUGE amounts of time. Then develop your selections with DXO PL Elite
I just find that DxO gets me there at least 95% of the time (after the initial cull in a viewer of course) with no further software required, and the transition from uncorrected RAW to JPEG is simple - no creating huge 16bit TIFF files in DPP first (which chew disc space at usually over 100Mb each),
then importing into a LR catalogue,
yeah, I hate that catalogue approach
then exporting to another folder (my previous workflow).
DxO does all of that quite simply in one place and one folder.

I must admit though, I tend to forget about the initial cost a lot more quickly that getting a monthly reminder :-D
every other year update on Black Friday works out to be $40/yr for DXO PL Elite vs $120/year for LR, that is an $80 savings per year, and years ago I didn't pay much for DXO PL initially.

Adobe has also elevated the pricing for new users by not including PS
