Battle of the 8's (MP that is)...

add it all up and the A2 looks the best, considering:

1. A1 noise level is pretty low.

2. Dimage 7, 7i, 7hi, and A1 have had the 28-200 for 3or 4 years now.

3.Antishake gets big props from A1 users...

i wish there was an A2 with Sony laser assist focus and IR nightshot...Sony still has those unbeatable features.

In most cases the manufacturers have simply stuck an 8 megapixel sensor into a 5 megapixel camera to please the marketing suits who think a bigger number means a better seller. In most cases it also probably means the newer cameras will be worse, not better, than their predecessors.

I would have tried for a lens (probably very difficult to do in a
digicam with a sensor of this size) that went from something like
20mm out to 140mm. Lots of folks out there would pay to go really
wide and on into the low telephoto range. Or... just go wide and
keep the zoom range under 100mm. I'd bet there would be a market
for that. Oly ought to face it: They're pretty much second tier.
But there's nothing wrong with that. You can clean up in that
segment, if you have something really unique.

,
I agree - they really kept that one under wraps pretty well.
However, one has to wonder how the zoom range (28-140mm) will
affect it against the very strong competition that's out there with
at least 7x zoom, even if the special zuiko lens was designed just
for it. Then again, if the picture quality is anything like the
E-1's (IMHO), then I think it might be a winner for Oly.

Cheers,
S.

Did you notice the Minolta Maxxum will have a 24 - 105mm lens.

The biggest surprise here is, of course, the Olympus camera. It's
like no other Olympus camera before it. Kudos to Oly for coming up
with some good stuff in this one.
Pretty neat feature, one will know how to bracket just in two turns of the dial :-O

On the KM-Japan website, they have a small image comparing a pic from the A2 vs. a "competitor camera", showing that the GT lens has an advantage in the CA/PF department.

What "competitor camera" do you guys think it is ;-D ???

My guess is.......... 300D!!!! LOL

Really, everyone is used to compare the 828 with it, why should this be different with other cams? :-D

Thanks for the links BTW. What's obvious, both Sony and Minolta need to hire good photographers to take sample images ;)

Yes there was everyone you mentioned. I think it is hard to really pick a winner. To me they were all winners. From looking at the poster size prints, there were no losers. I was very impress.

I think each camera has it's own set of features which should have appeal to a lot of photographers. For me I am still impressed with the F828, and now the A2 and the Pro1. But all of them were good.

For the techies, you will just have to wait for Phil, for the ones who want to know how it handles in the field, then Michael will need to give his impressions.

I think the various fine photographers on these different forums will probably give a treat when they buy these cameras, learn how to use them, and share their wonderful photos with us.
So, based on what I've read/seen so far, it looks like there's a
whole slew of new digicams based on the 8MP sensor. To summarize:

1. Sony DSC-F828
  • 2/3" CCD, 28-200mm, F2.0-2.8, Zeiss T*
Excellent video.
2. Nikon CP 8700
  • 2/3" CCD, 35-280mm, F2.8-4.2, Nikkor ED
Weak video
Time-laspe movie
3. Canon Pro 1
  • 2/3" CCD, 28-200mm, F2.4-3.5, L-seires
Excellent video.
4. Oly C-8080
  • 2/3" CCD, 28-140mm, F-2.4-3.5, Zuiko lens
Weak video
5. KonicaMinolta Dimage A2 (should be out by April)
  • anticipated specs:
2/3" CCD, 28-200mm, F(???), GT lens
f2.8-3.5
Video weak
but has night movie
time-laspe movie

Excellent EVF - turns on automatically when looking and switches automatically to LCD when you remove your eye from the EVF.
Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on these and which one's
they are most interested in.
I couldn't tell from the show. They all generated a lot of interest. I think most were impressed with all of them. I think it is going to boil down to what features you want more.

From looking at poster size prints from all these new 8mp cameras, I see no problems with any of them. When professional photographers use these fantastic cameras they produce wonderful work. All these 8mp will let you print large poster size prints. There are reasons for this new technology. It is not just marketing, it is what the advance and professional photographers want. They got it in spades this year at the PMA. From the P&S cameras, to the prosumer 8mp cameras, to the new dSLR's, there are great cameras to chose from. Of course for those bent on finding fault, well there is nothing I can say. For those who want to learn photography and have fun and create beautiful photographs, there is a treasure of fine cameras to chose from at every level from all the manufactures. From last years PMA to this years, all the manufactures have raised the bar. We have came a long ways from the film days.

Shame on them for making the images microscopic. The exposures look a little different, too - which could be just enough to blow the blue channel.
