Answer from Nikon to III

Yes, MOST pro shooters are not camera buffs. They shoot what they have. At some point, it needs to be replaced. I want Nikon to make the camera that nikon shooters just have to buy. And release it soon, please.
I was at the Sportsshooter Academy IV a few weeks ago. They had a
MKIII as a demo. The Nikon shooters were MUCH more excited about a
new 2007 Body than the MKIII.
We found that it can take crappy pictures too when pointed in the
wrong direction, or not properly exposed.
What a concept?
Truth: Most people making money with their equipment aren't
switching anything. Too costly and time consuming. In fact, most
don't read these nonsense posts (I should take that course myself
eh?).

The theory floated here was that Canon was buyuing market share with give-aways, presumably particularly in the sports field since that is where the 'sea of white lenses' effect is most pronounced.

This is the theory which I felt did not make much sense and that other factors could account for it within this particular market.

If you are not interested in that subject, fair enough, but it somewhat limits the value of your participation.
So why do you think that Canon have made such huge inroads into the
sports market at the top level?
why should I think about that? it is their business. I saw a lead
pipe running into Hampton Court, it looks like new. Henry refused
to drink water from Thames. so they made a 3 mile long pipe, carved
it underground. much more interesting. actually, amazing. so I'm
thinking how to shoot it to create the feeling I have. it is my
business.

you mean that my unwillingness to guess limits the value of my participation in the council of augurs? :)

those who know the answer, they will not speak. wild speculations - that's what have limited value.

I notice one thing, in newspapers I see a lot of noisy shots, especially those that use colour, but in the sport weeklies/monthlies they are mostly very clean in the low light shots. The problem with High ISO in sport is that most files need to be opened up with higher exposures which leaves noisy pics to print. All cameras suffer from this, there is no DSLR that can truly give you a 'clean shot'. Nikons will always fare well in sport or any buying decision. There is no handicap with the D2 over and above what the competition can offer.

I'm wondering why "sports photography " has been elevated in these forums as being the be all and end all of camera models and brands? IMHO sports photography is pretty mundane and not a whole lot different than it was 20 years ago with 35mm. Surly there are many types of photography that do not require huge fps and super high ISO's that are just as valid as this obsession with sports photography on these and other internet forums.Use the camera that fits "your" needs, if you need 3200 at 10fps go Canon, not every photographer"needs" that though. Jim

I am unsure about this statement two although the 580-EX is not bad it is not as accurate as the excellent SB-800.

Also the 580 mk 2 is not in the open domain, untest so you can't really make a statement like this, 580 mk 2 may be just slightly better than mk 1 who knows ?

First of all, most of the agencies and clients could give a $hit what camera you use, it's the images that matter. And most of the Nikon pros outside of the media are using D200's and D2X's, not D2h's.

Secondly, most media outlets are too cheap to put the money into switching, (ask anybody who works for Lee Enterprises).

Third, for the photojournalists, none of this, including the MK III matters, b/c they are all starting down the path of video, and I imagine video will end up taking over the newspaper photography market in a few years.

For the magazine, commercial, portrait, or wedding photographer, the Nikon D3 will be a big hit.

AND REMEMBER, NEITHER NIKON OR CANON MAKES THEIR PROFIT FROM PROS, THEY MAKE IT FROM THE ZILLIONS OF D40'S THEY'RE SELLING AT BEST BUY.

...use a little of everything, from 35mm film SLRs all the way up
to large format cameras with scanning backs, even renting what they
don't own to make sure they're using the best tool for the job at
hand. If you actually knew any professional photographers, or if
you had an ounce of professionalism yourself, you'd know this.
"professional" means it's your profession. it doesn't describe the contents of your camera bag.

I was discussing the facts - the fact is that Nikon long glass is a
lot dearer than Canon,
look at warranties

Hi

In Europe that I think is little bigger Photo market than US, both Nikon and Canon have one Year warranty of the lenses, If I am wrong please let me know. I think Nikon 5 years warranty is only in US??

In Sweden the

Canon 500mm f/4 IS cost about 8 895 USD

Nikon 500mm f/4 cost about 13 128 USD

So offen Nikon photographers in Europe that want big lenses, change to Canon, for the same price as the Nikon 500mm with no VR the could have a Canon 500mm with IS and the new Canon 1D mark3.

In hole Sweden Nikon has 2 repairshops, in the same geographical area.

Canon has 5 repairshops, from south to middle Sweden where most people lives.

Interesting that there are a lot of Canon discussion i Nikon forum, but very seldom Nikon discussion in Canon forum.

Hi,

Is that not the point. Canon have a good product for sure, but it cost performance ratio is much lower than Nikons.

Hence you can not afford the Canon products you desire, hence Nikon have the market place.

I am very happy with the D2x. Canon offer nothing better 4 me.

no, in Europe every product sold have at least two year warranty, for Nikon lenses sold by the Italian distributor warranty is 4 years.

In the UK the Nikon warranty is 1 year and Nikon prices for most lenses are usually significantly higher than for the equivalent Canon lens. The Canon lens is often better due to IS versus no VR.

It just does not make much sense for anyone in the UK who wants a long lens to buy Nikon unless there are reasons such as significant prior investment in Nikon. The only conclusion I can draw is that Nikon have decided to abandon certain markets such as sports and birding.

I am sure that once they have VR in long lenses, sales will soar, and prices can drop to canon levels (though they will probably start high to milk early adopters).

I have simply seperated myself from the Nikon hysteria/loyalty and am using the tool that is giving me the best performance.

YES, I have been a diehard Nikon person and been so for years and I expect no different response from Nikon people that what I am getting now.

I CAREFULLY did my homework and tests and found myself wrong is staying with Nikon NO MATTER WHAT! Blind loyalty is exactly that, BLIND!

Money spent on camera gear, for me , has little limits and I can buy as I want, why would I not buy what does best for me? Heck the 5D was way cheaper than either of my D2Xs so it not like I want to use only the most expensive gear for posterity.

I sit for hours in front of my computer, working in PhotoShop and I see what I see. I am not imagining the lack of noise, it is real.

I do not expect to win anyone over here. I, more than most here, know what a die hard Nikon user is. Sorry to step into this mine field and cause ripples in the Nikon waters.

Continue on Nikon people, march, march, march to the tune! It is rather sad because even most blind can still hear. There are some even scared to listen to the possibility!

Hi

I think that after one year the Warranty is not so strong, some Europe rules??

Anyway Nikon in Sweden says 1 year and Great britain says one Year

I invite you to look thru a 5D viewfinder with a 17mm lens on it. What you see is a huge expansive field of view, a real 17mm view, not 26mm but 17mm!
