A7iv customization question

I regularly shoot with flash in manual mode, typical settings being 1/200th, f/5.6, ISO400 or similar. Naturally for indoor photography, this results in massively under exposed images without the flash and a dark viewfinder due to the under-exposure. Naturally, the solution to this is to turn "Setting Effects" to off, then back on when I return to regular shooting.

I do this often enough that I'd like to make the switch a bit easier. Currently, I have the item added to the custom menus,. Ideally I'd like to add it to a button setting or the Fn menu, but the item doesn't show up as an allowable customization option. I thought I'd hit on something when I uncovered "Bright Monitoring", but it seems that only works in manual focus mode.

Is it actually not possible to program "Setting Effects" to a button or Fn, or am I missing something? If not, anyone have any idea why not? I'm not using a Sony or a Sony compatible flash if that any bearing on the matter

Thanks in advance for any guidance on the subject.

I just tried it and yes, you can assign that function to a button. It can also be part of the function menu.

To assign to a button:

1. Yellow suitcase menu then Custom key / Dial set.

2. Pick your chosen button

3. Red camera menu / Live View Disp. Select

And that's basically it. Your chosen button now toggles Setting Effect on and off. 🙂

How about setting one of the custom modes for flash photography? I have mode 1 set up for this - you can record your chosen aperture, shutter speed, flash settings, and yes, Setting Effects Off. Then when you want to shoot flash, just turns the PASM dial to 1 and you are all set to go.

This is the whole point of custom modes - let them remember the fiddly little stuff so you don't have to,

Mark Galer has YouTube videos on setting up different Sony models (I'm sure the A7IV is among them), and he takes you through the process.
