A DP2M sample

Not quite, though. Just an upsized DP2 picture from this Spring.

Click on original in my gallery to see the version upsized to DP2M (max) size: 4074 x 3136.

Now imagine thrice as much detail, and you might get an idea of what the announcement of the DP1M and DP2M really means.

P.S.:

The DP2 upsizes quite nicely, in my opinion.

You need to enable "Allow download of originals" in your setup because original is not an option in your gallery for the rest of us

That's excatly why I'm so exited about the new DP1/2 Merrills. Bonsai size landscape monster cameras. A dream for every outdoors guy.

If the lenses are up to the task. Hopefully they will be.

Shooting for fun and memories.

I remember your recent posts about being very happy with prints from your DP at 13x19. What improvements do you think you'll get if you upgrade ?

I honestly can't see that I would see much difference for most of my photos at normal print sizes - though I'm still interested in the new cameras if Sigma give them reasonable price tags ;-) - so I'm curious what you think you would gain.

It's a question I've posed here and in other forums : such as this one http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1027&message=38897794 , sorry if I'm repeating myself ;-)

Nick

by means of the ability to crop . that's a big thing..

I think it will depend very much on the subject. I chose the picture with the oilseed **** on purpose, because it has lots of fine detail where the DP2x, printed at 13x19, is perfectly fine (to my eyes) at normal viewng distance, but where I would expect visibly more detail with the DP2M when viewed a bit closer.

All in all I don't expect huge differences - the DP2x (for my purposes) is that good.

But I'm also curious about what Michael Rreichmann said in his review of the SD1 (sensor):

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/sigma_sd1_review.shtml
What made it so enjoyable though was loading the files on the computer and making prints. After working out a workflow that got me out of the dreadful Sigma Photo Pro as quickly as possible, I loved working with the files. They are that good.
Resolution is remarkable.... Surpasses (by a small but noticable margin) the Sony A900 and A55 on-screen and at typical print sizes...

Not quite in Leica M9 territory though...could be the lenses as much as anything else

What impresses most about the SD1 is micro-detail... clearly a result of not having at AA filter, as much as anything else

This may be what the so-called 3D effect that people talk about is caused by. There is detail within detail
That's pretty high praise from an experienced Photographer an Printer, in my opinion.

I can't wait for May / June, when the DP2M supposedly should hit the shelves.

I nearly forgot: I might get an A0 printer sometime and would love to be able to print at that size without any problems.

Personally I don't seem able to compose with a crop in mind later - I need to get it right as much as possible in the viewfinder/LCD - perhaps it's my lack of imagination ?

I did cover cropping in that post I linked to, but that can't be for too many shots ?

I don't know the answer, and am genuinely curious about why so many seem to need the extra resolution, not just from Sigma cameras, but even things like the D800. Are there really so many people who need that level of detail ?

Maybe my standards are too low as for almost all of my stuff I find my DPs and 10-12 MP 4/3 and m4/3s cameras are enough.

I also realise that "because it's there" is often reason enough, I'm prone to buying stuff I don't really need as well ;-)

Nick

I'm interested in the new DPs, though I'm not sure I need them ;-)

Good to hear your thoughts,

Nick

for me, the 24Mp of the NEX7 has been a revolution and I'm afraid it's the cropping thing again, I can leave the 16mm on (keeping the camera pocketable) and still get quite a bit of "Reach" due to the resolution , the 18-200 (28-300) is extended the same way .

should I need to print bill-boards it'll do that too but certainly for me at least, the current resolution hike is very welcome as it's not at the expense of quality (in the NEX7 anyway) and makes the glass go way further

That must have been painful for the man who doesn't seem to like to spend more than £99 on a camera ;-)

I've seriously thought about the 5n or the 7 but the lack of native lenses is a bit of a drawback to me, and the few they do have are pretty large - the 16mm excepted of course.

The new Oly is probably of more interest to me as I still have some 4/3s and m4/3s stuff and adapters for my legacy lenses.

On the other hand I'm not using any camera very much recently so it's more a case of gear lust than actually needing anything better ...

A pair of very interesting comparisons will be the new DP1M/DP2M against the NEX5N/NEX7 since they have the same crop factor and can use the same lens, and will probably end up being similarly priced.

Thats will be several months away, but dont worry, we already have an extremely good idea of how they will perform compared the NEX-7...By comparing the SD1, which has the same sensor as the DPM's, to the NEX-7...Their review samples on Luminous Landscape show that the SD1 and NEX-7 have practically the exact same resolution...But the NEX-7 will be a far better camera that either of the DPM's in every single regard, and it will probably cost less too...Plus, you dont have to wait months to get an NEX-7!

But you dont need to use native lenses with an NEX-5n or NEX-7...Simply buy one of the cheap and easily available E mount adapters and you can use virtually any lens you like on them...For instance, E mount adapters are available for Canon EF mount, Konica AR mount, Pentax K mount, Leica M mount, Leica R mount, Canon FL/FD mounts, M42 mount, M39 mount, Minolta MC/MD mounts, Minolta AF A-mount, Nikon mount (Even G and AFS models), Contax G mount, Contax C/Y mount, Pentax 110 mount, Olympus OM mount, Exacta/Topcon mount, 16mm C mount, Rollei MF, Micro 4/3rds, Sony Alpha A mount, T2 mount, and there are probably more I dont know about.
The new Oly is probably of more interest to me as I still have some 4/3s and m4/3s stuff and adapters for my legacy lenses.
Well you can at least use your M4/3rds lenses on the NEX-5n or NEX-7 but I have'nt been able to find an adapter for 4/3rds to NEX.

Yep and Peaking Rocks especially with the hi-mag liveview for focussing and the real time controls

It was a feeble attempt to be lighthearted based on your recent posts about only spending £99 to get the DP1.

The ability to crop is often necessary when shooting birds or other wildlife that you can't get close enough to.
