I presume people still want to see some samples from the 602 - judging by the fact that my first test shots album still gets many hits to this very moment. So here are some test shots from a walk in Amsterdam, capital of The Netherlands, this afternoon. All 3mp/fine, straight out of cam, not even cropped. Mind that most of the time it was either raining, about to start to rain, or it had just stopped to rain.

Not fishing for compliments or anything like that, I just hope this can help people make up their minds as to whether they like this cam or not. Seems to become an ugly discussion from time to time, so here is some more ammo for those people :-)

Still love the cam, not found a single thing I dislike. As I wrote before, I don't take part in discussions on noise, fringing etc...(find that boring and useless) but I would like to say again that the feel (that includes operating) of the cam is one of its best features.

The great focus speed, EVF and battery life help a lot there. I use this cam almost as if it is an (d)slr, most of the time after I take a shot I don't even bother to switch the cam off, so ready for the next in a split second.

All and all quite a different experience that I think you have to feel for yourself to know what I am talking about.

Of course I'm willing to answer any questions anyone might have.

Yes please! These shots are a good advert for the 602 and also a good display for potential tourists to Amsterdam. I have a Canon A20 which I want to replace with a higher resolution digicam this summer. Have been looking at the Canon G2 BUT the lack of an EVF puts me off and have been considering the 602. I'm assuming that in bright sunlight where the G2's LCD is difficult to read the 602's EVF will be clear and very readable.

Continue the good work with the 602 shots.

WONDERFUL! And ALL pictures!

Howcome are the first pictures I saw not that good? Good but not that good like these.

Maybe 3M fine, ISO160 are the best settings and of course a good photographer ;-) is needed for making such photo's.

These are really the best photo's I have seen of the Fujis602z and also straight out of the camera.
I am really amazed.
To me it is also not needed to do any corrections to them.

I stiill don't understand why I see here on the Fuji forum some very ugly photo's of this camera.

Very nice photo of that men who is walking (nr.9 I think) ;-)

Thanks!
Eppie.

Hey there Mark -

Thanks again for more posts. It's great to hear you are enjoying the camera and the resultant pictures show it. If the Blues Brothers are there, it must be cool! Wonderful use of color in your shots. And what a great bronze statue on dsc0017 & 18. My wife would love to visit the shop in dsc038 & 41. But where are all the "working girls"? ;-)

Q: are you using "normal" sharpening? The reason I ask is that there has been some discussion here about using soft and then sharpening in software. This "smoothing" would be the only thing that I have seen on the 602 that I question. It doesn't always show up, but it kinda bugs me when it does. No reflection on you, but an example of the sharpening/noise reduction issue (blah, blah, blah) is the bricks on the building in your newest post at dsc0013 http://www.pbase.com/image/2479331/original
Am I being too critical?

Hello Seth,

IMO you're not to critical. Please don't get me wrong here, i also consider uprading. But some of these shots look quite inferior to me. Just compared similiar shots from the 6900 and they look just way better. The bricks in dscf 7, 13, 15 look smearad. The pics are way oversharpened. You can try it by applying a small amound of unsharp mask and the pic is completely destroyed. The 6900 also performs inferior under some conditions, but shots in normal daylight look way better imo.

Hey Mark,

Great Job w/ the camera work - Gives hope to amateurs like me. I just got the 602 in the mail today and have already taken a couple pics straight out of the box (after installing batteries of course and smartmedia) and am very pleased w/ the quality. I've been reading the forums like mad since I ordered my 602 on sunday and all those discouraging "noise & fringe" talk is just overblown IMO. All the pics i've taken so far from my back yard have turned out as great as I hoped- and that's w/ default settings & auto focus-haven't even messed w/ the manual settings yet.

As for the feel of the camera, I have to agree w/ Mark whole heartedly...this camera feels natural and lighter than an SLR but Steadier than a small Canon powershot. I have even taken shots one handed that came out pretty good. Just all in all after first days impressions I'm loving this camera.

Just a quick question...you noted that the battery lasted pretty long on yours...I installed a NiMH 1800mah battery I bought from the local shop and it lasted only an hour and a half. Is this normal ? I heard that you have to recharge a NiMH battery a couple times before you get full battery life use out of it. I didn't recharge at all since I dont' have a recharger yet- so I used the battery straight out of the package.

-thanks for your input to this forum,
Eric N.

I'm intersted in the burst mode, 5 fps, last 5 kept....I'm looking for a camera I can use for my nephew's hockey games and niece's track meets...can you maybe take a sequence of soemthing moving relatively fast like that?

NiMh batteries (and NiCad) are generally supplied completely uncharged (though it sounds like yours were given a small 'starter' charge, or charged by the shop). The charge in the battery decreases with time too.

So, I wouldn't worry - one way or another, you got your hour and a half out of an empty battery ;-)

My brand new 1800mA/H NiMh set lasted for the first two days of use, which included as much playing as it did taking photos - I'm impressed!

Heinz -

I don't own a 6900. If I did, I would keep it and wouldn't waste time upgrading until the next camera comes along. As for the smearing, I believe MikeBee posted a great way to shoot in soft sharpening and deal with this. I think these initial images are clearly superior to the ones I get with my 4900. Soon the din will die down, users will post process and post even better images. And I'm pleased to read posts from two 4900 users who have the 602 in hand and are enjoying the 602 experience.

hi, a bit of a repeat post from me sorry if youve read it before !

The more samples that appear and the more i use my own 602 in the past 2 days the more apparent it is becoming what sort of shot is prone to the over agressive noise reduction that some people have a problem with. The solution, if required, is easy, use soft mode for the type of shot that is prone to the smearing and over-sharpness and sharpen it yourself in your own image editing programme, the smearing effect will not appear, that is what I have found anyway.

my quick experiment can be found at

http://www.greybardesign.com/602/

hope this helps !

The guy in number 33 looks like he doesn't like his picture taken.

Those look great! I got to view them all full size and they were wonderful.

Hmmm how much can I get for my D7? You guys keep pulling off those and I might give it up. Or just get the Fuji also. ;-)

Nice!
