R7 - shutter shock still an issue?

I remember when the R7 came out there was alot of talk about shutter shock and blurry photos from it.

Is this still a worry or has firmware updates correct it in some way? What are the best settings to avoid it? Im sure electronic shutter eliminates it but in situations where you want to avoid rolling shutter, what are the recommended settings in EFCS or mechanical shutter to reduce the 'shutter shock'?

Thanks in advance!

It's not an issue in e-shutter or EFCS. Initially, shutter shock would occasionally show up in EFCS at the H+ 15fps setting, but a firmware updated fixed that. What the firmware did was reduce the H+ frame rate from 15fps to between 10 and 12 for shutter speeds that were affected (roughly 1/30-1/200). If you want to get the full 15fps in EFCS, you have to make sure your shutter speed is high enough. 1/500 is definitely high enough. I verified this for myself and posted about it here at the time. I never use full mechanical, so I don't know what speeds show shutter shock for that.

Yes, as Alistair says, it was fixed in a firmware update, the version 1.3.

They reduced the fps, depending on shooting mode ans shutter mode, in some modes from 1/640' and below.

So if you're on the latest firmware (1.5), it shouldn't be a problem.

N.B. Canon didn't reveal this until someone noticed the slower fps rates and queried it, but at least they confirmed it.

Zero shutter shock using the Electronic Shutter mode 😉👍

I still remember the first time tried the R7. First few clicks were with the mechanical shutter, and 😮😮😮 That thing slapped so hard and made such an ugly sound ! I thought it must surely be broken ! No way would it be made like that ! But nope. That’s how that stupid thing was designed ! Set it to Electronic Shutter and never looked back. On rare occasions I will use EFC setting, which is still pretty loud, a d ugly, but at least it eliminates rolling shutter for things like BIF or Hummers in Hover.

Im just hoping that they improve the readout speed so much on the R7 Mk II, that they can ditch the mechanical shutter altogether. A mechanical shutter seems so archaic, on a modern mirrorless camera…

I didnt know a 'half stacked' sensor was a thing until Z6III was announced. If they could go at least half stacked in the next R7, it would be amazing.

I’ve been meaning to read about that… or the lazy way, on a YouTube video 🙂

That was my reaction and surprise as well. Got on the web and found someone who recorded the sound to verify mine wasn’t broken.

In my testing shutter shock visibly degraded image quality when using the mechanical shutter at 1/250 and slower.

I was talking about EFCS, not full mechanical. EFCS is not affected at all by shutter shock, at any speed. There is almost never any point in choosing full mechanical over EFCS. The only circumstances in which it would be worth doing so are shooting very fast lenses wide open at very high shutter speeds when there are round highlights in the background that can get cut off with EFCS. In those very rare circumstances, it’s worth using full mechanical, and there will be no shutter shock, because we are talking about shutter speeds of at least 1/1000.

In other words, no, shutter shock is not an issue at all with the R7, because there is always a mode you can choose that will avoid it, and any other problem.

Since getting my R7 after about the first week I have shot in e-shutter and going on 2 years. I have not had a lot of rolling shutter or enough to cause any real issues. Burst shooting there will always workable files. On the other hand my R6II is always on EFCS.

This may or not be helpful to you.
