Hi everyone,

I've been a long time customer of DxO Photolab as an alternative to anything Adobe. Now it seems they have forced my hand to move to Adobe Lightroom.

When I loaded some intial test images into DxO Photolab 4 Elite, none of the images loaded. I opened a support ticket with them:

The camera you mentioned is already on our development roadmap, but has not yet been scheduled for release. Due to this, I unfortunately cannot give you a time frame for support at this time. Please monitor the following link now and then to find out more about the expected release date:

It's unfortunate, as I was just about to upgrade to DxO Photolab 6, I guess that upgrade will now go to Adobe Lightroom. The Canon Photo Professional 4 still looks like it was a high school co-op assignment, but will convert RAW in a pinch.

Nothing new here.

DXO is not given preproduction files or bodies to work with, so they have to start building their profiles on day 1.

DXO has an all or nothing approach, they wont release support until it is done, and given their (arguably class leading) correction profiles for both lenses and bodies which take time to get right, its nothing out of the ordinary.

Every major lens, every major body, all take time to get support. Its one of the factors to weigh in on with DXO, and one of the pains of being an early adopter of new hardware.

You may go anywhere you want but Photolab commonly takes 4 to 8 weeks to update new bodies and lenses once the first units are shipped. This is the usual case.

If you are a long time customer, you know it takes time for DxO to support new camera models.

I could last week open raw files from R6 II in darktable.
Not really, I've had the same Nikon gear for ages, so I never had to experience this.
I’m processing my R6ii RAWs with DPP for now, until DxO releases their profile. I’d recommend going to Photolab 6 when you can. Deep Prime is wonderful.

Adobe support R6II RAW, you can use DNG Converter

After reviewing Adobe's licensing and weird versioning for Lightroom, I think I will stick with DxO PhotoLab, and upgrade to 6 with support comes out, or wait for a Boxing Day sale. I'll try DPP for the time being maybe shoot RAW + JPEG for the time being and come back to process the RAWs when needed...

I'm on PhotoLab 5, waiting for PhotoLab 7, thinking that support for the R6 II may well come to v5 as well (not that I'll need it). Now that we're past Black Friday, you can afford to wait to see if that happens before splashing out on v6. Their lens support doesn't seem to depend on the version of the program, but it was a few versions along before they supported corrections for EF lens on EOS M cameras.

Knowing how DxO operates, when they provide support for the R6II it will only come to the then current release. In this case PhotoLab 6. I had to upgrade from v4 to v5 to get R3 support. I’m passing on v6 since it offers so little extra and seems buggy right now.

You’re really not willing to wait perhaps 2 months? DXO deliver on their promises and produce really good profiles. Often they have profiles before Adobe, for example the RF 16mm 2.8. I assume you also have a very good working knowledge of how Photolab works, a considerable investment in time and effort. Why relearn?

Personally I have DXO PL5 and no need as yet to update, also the Adobe photography plan so LR and PS, plus Affinity. I use them all, each has strengths, but my core workflow is RAW conversion in PL.

I got DXO Photolab 6 upgrade because it has greatly improved version of noise reduction IMO. A whole new NR option in fact. I have historically upgraded every version from DXO PL 3. It is usually 50% off to upgrade.

It’s not true to say the new DeepPrime XD noise reduction in PL6 is a great improvement over the previous DeepPrime noise reduction in PL5. Reading posts in the DxO forum and various reviews online indicates that DeepPrime XD only preserves detail a little better in a few specific cases, e.g. Astro /dark skies. So for me the upgrade is not great value IMHO.

Agreed, it's marginal and there's generally only a noticeable difference for pixel peepers (like me :-D ) - not necessarily limited to 'specific cases', but more apparent with higher ISO's.

Below image compares R5 shot at ISO 6400 with DeepPRIME (left) vs DeepPRIME XD (right).

Make of the results what you will, but do note the usual screen capture limitations apply.

The right hand image appears to have had more sharpening applied. As it’s a crop at 200%, I doubt any difference could be discerned in a print :)

Pretty alarming Teddy bear at first sight!

Thanks for this. I haven’t used XD yet (or done a test) with my PL6, but there’s definitely more detail there in your sample. Looks like it’s going to be the new norm for me, if there aren’t any contrapositives showing up (artifacts, smearing, etc).

ps. That is indeed one whacked-out bear! :-D

It’s certainly sharper with more detail, but there is also less noise present as well (check the backgrounds). The two normally run counter to each other, but that’s not the case here. :-)

DeepPrime XD takes quite a lot longer to process an image, even with a fast graphics card.

As I also have Topaz DeNoise AI and Sharpen AI, I am pretty sure I can produce as good a result when/if it really matters (for a large print), albeit by having to use additional tools.
