AFAIK,

1. Connect your phone with camera and use that as gps device

2. Buy the grip with gps

Im successfully using Camera Connect app on iPhone to live-tag photos taken with my R5.

This works pretty well stable. Just You need to be careful - if you extensively use other apps on the iPhone, Camera connect can be killed. Then before taking photos be sure that it running (just by clicking its icon). Normalny it perfectly runs in the background.

Use Canon Camera Connect and Bluetooth to capture GPS data on your images. It takes a few minutes to set up, then a minute or so before each shooting session to activate it, but then you are all set. You don't need any dongles, or added accessories.

I also forget to turn the camera app on. When I do remember it’s a faff getting things up and running so much so that I now don’t bother.

I leave the camera in aeroplane mode to conserve battery power.

I bought the GP-E2 receiver. It has it's pro and cons but ultimately I got it because I didn't want to drain either my cell phone or R5 batteries using the Canon app so this was the simplest solution. It's really silly its not built-in. The R3 has it built in, but then it was stripped out of the R7 (from the 7D2). Hopefully the Mk 2 R cameras will all have it.

I used the GP-E2 but it was to cumbersome for me. Nowadays I always just use the GPS of my iPhone using Bluetooth and the Camera Connect app.
When I start shooting I check if the camera connected to the phone and then I don’t worry about it anymore. Works pretty robust for me.

The GPS symbol of the camera flashes if it loses the connection to the app, so you get a warning if it is not working.

I never noticed abnormal camera or cell phone battery consumption when using the GPS app. I set it to capture data every few minutes -- I forget how frequently, but probably at the longest interval practicable. My camera batteries are about a year old and my phone is three years old, so the batteries are fairly good to start with. My biggest problem is remembering to turn the GPS on, but then I forgot to do it with my DSLRs which had built in GPS, and with the GPS dongle I used to use. So no matter how convenient the GPS is, you have to remember to use it. And -- having said all this, I really do miss the built-in GPS.

Not sure what faff means but I start the Canon camera app on my iPhone and geotagging is virtually immediately available without any further intervention on my part. FWIW, I leave bluetooth on all the time. No obvious impact on battery life. (My camera is a R6).

Just a thought. If using other apps on the phone tends to disconnect the GPS, why not use a second phone? The phone GPS doesn’t need a cellular signal so an older, spare phone would do the job. I have a spare iPhone SE (original) which I could use. Anyone try this, keeping their main phone for other uses?

There is no grip with gps.
Sorry I got confused with the wireless file transfer grip. Yes, only option is to use your phone and Canon app.
Not the only option. There's GP-E2 module, although it's not cheap and is bulky, I've never considered it.

I think it's a tradeoff between built in GPS which drains the camera battery, connect with a phone which drains the phone battery or attaching a separate unit, which I will be prone to forget because it's a hassle!

A built-in GPS wouldn't have been draining the battery if disabled. I'd prefer to have it as an option.

Exactly the same with me. Just start the App and everything works without a touch. I just need to remember to start the App (if it's not running), but blinking GPS icon reminds me almost always.
My WiFi is off, but BT is on. Tried with Off and no much difference in battery life.

What's best depends upon your needs. What works best for me is to record a track log with my phone (not connected to the camera). When I'm finished my shoot, I fire up my Clocks app and take a picture. Then I load HoudaGeo (apparently only a Mac app) and drag the GPS log and photos to it. I get a popup to enter the time of the last photo, which, since it's a picture of the clocks app, I just enter from what's on the photo. That part is used to compensate for any discrepancy between camera time and GPS time. On my camera there's usually a difference because I don't ever set daylight time. Plus the camera clock tends to drift a bit.

This procedure works best for me because it doesn't rely on a bluetooth connection, a dedicated app to not shut down, or a camera to be able to interface with the phone - I use some cameras that don't have this feature, so I can use this procedure with all my cameras.

For those who use Camera Connect, what happens when you turn the camera off? Does it reconnect automatically when you turn the camera back on? Or do you need to navigate some menu to reset the connection? If the latter, this seems like a no-go for me. If we ever lose this hot weather, I'll make a point of trying it out.
