Hi, I was checking Luminar AI. Is it worth it? Most of the info I found seemed to be paid advertisements…

I asked because I have an i3 laptop and would need an upgrade to be able to use it…

Are there any AI alternatives with similar easy editing portrait sliders?

Thanks

If the OS for your laptop is 32-bit, you are out of luck. Virtually all of today's editors require 64-bit. Older versions of Luminar (I have L3) also have sliders for portrait purposes. But "AI" is missing, whatever that is.

Thanks the laptop is 64bits. Their website mentions I5 under requirements.

If I can get an older version that has most of the same features, it'd be fine...

I got my copy of L3 back in 2019 from Amazon. Now Amazon shows L3 as unavailable, but still does list L4.

Both ACDSee Photo Editor 11 and Adobe Elements have portrait specific tools. Not as slick as Luminar, but I regard these as better values than Luminar.

As you mention ACDSee.. far better value, only less visible as they favor R&D, not online marketing

ACDSee - R&D and Dev only.. run by geeks

Luminar - Bulls..t talk, only talk and promise and sponsor Youtubers .. run by marketers

I know the one I prefer

You can download a trial and see if it works for you on your machine and does what you want.

Even on high end hardware Luminar is slow to launch and slow to render, AI being no different and perhaps worse.

I like Luminar 4 and use it almost daily as a plug-in from PS so not a hater.

However AI was so buggy for me (menus and keyboard shortcuts did not work, rendering back to PS often failed) that Luminar just gave me a refund. That suggests to me they know there are significant issues with the code . . .

Stay clear of Skylum products. They are released on a lot of promises and Youtube shill videos but the only half reliable thing is that you can get a refund - the rest is hit and miss and subject to change and quick discontinuation. Luminar 4 is officially in the last phase of it’s devepmen, the so called “support” which will run out at the end of this year. Luminar AI is not compatible with the previous versions, so all effort you’re going to put into Luminar 4 is a waste come december. You need a really beefy computer to run Skylum products, I’d guess you need to have either a load of time or a few 1000’s Eur/$ lying around to buy a proper workstation.

I've been through Luminar 2018 and then Flex (L3 wouldn't work on my older computer). I wanted Luminar 4 and have a 64 bit MacBook Pro to use it on. I like the program a lot, although as I've learned to use it I've found the AI sliders to not be that impressive. I prefer to do all the adjustments myself rather than depend on an AI type slider, which does things I can't really control.

I got Luminar AI not long ago since I got a cheap, early purchase deal on it. However, Skylum has yet again changed the interface enough that it's again somewhat different from Luminar 4, which to me is the perfect interface and which I now can use quite well. I really don't like Luminar AI all that much and probably won't use it much, if at all. From playing with it, I don't yet see any advantage to it over L4.
